Redbirds Fight Their Way Through Two Tough Opponents To Claim Latest Wishigan Crown

It took a comeback win to get it done but the Marinette Redbirds came out on top of last Saturday’s Wishigan Playoffs at Pedersen Ball Park, defeating the Channing Railroaders 7-3 to claim their fifth league title in a row.

The Redbirds started the day with a close game to advance to the championship round as they edged the Menominee Storm 2-1 after taking the lead for good in the sixth inning. Channing, meanwhile, slipped past the Tri-City North Stars by a final of 5-2. The ‘Birds finished the year 17-6 overall and 10-2 in the Wishigan loop.

Redbirds Solve

Channing In Final

Marinette’s quest for a fifth-straight league title looked to be in a bit of doubt early as the Railroaders turned a two-out situation into four straight singles to plate three runs right off the bat. Marinette reclaimed a bit of scoreboard territory in its half of the first frame when Pat Wolard popped a fly out to bring in Jordan Powers, who had reached after being hit by a pitch.

It was the bottom of the third inning when the Redbirds came alive. RBIs were clocked by Wolard and Todd Olsen while Adam Francour managed to bunt runners into scoring position as Marinette worked hard to take advantage of three errors committed in the inning by Channing.

The lead in hand and the Railroaders stuck in the station the rest of the way thanks to good defense and the pitching of Wolard, who recovered from the early trio of runs hung on him by Channing batters to finish the day with seven strikeouts in five innings of work, giving up eight hits and two earned runs while walking only one batter.

In the championship game, we had some key hits to pull ahead, said Redbirds boss Nick Brukardt. It also helped that Channing gave us some runs with their miscues in the third.

Marinette Gets Past

Menominee

It was a pitcher’s duel between the Redbirds’ Jake McMahon and the Storm’s Aaron Woods in the early game on Saturday at Pedersen Ball Park but in the end, the Marinette gang had just enough offense to make the difference and move on to the championship round with a 2-1 win over Menominee.

The Redbirds drew first blood in the third inning as Jordan Powers connected for a base hit to bring in teammate Jason Hofer, who reached first on a fielder’s choice. From there, McMahon and Woods worked their ways out of various jams over the next two innings until, in the sixth, Menominee’s Heath Rowe singed and then stole second before being brought across on a base hit by Ryan Kruse to tie the score at 1-1.

But the Redbirds took the lead back in the bottom half of the inning as Jordan Powers walked to first before stealing second. He later took third on a fly from Wolard before reaching home on a sac fly from Adam Francour.

Channing Defeats Tri-

City For Trip To Finals

The Railroaders earned a spot in Saturday’s Wishigan League Playoffs championship round following a 5-2 win over the North Stars in a comeback victory.

Tri-City went up 2-0 with a two-run second inning but Channing came right back at them in the third for a pair of runs of their own. The Railroaders added a pair of runs in the fourth to take the lead for good and then added an insurance score in the sixth.

The Railroaders got RBIs from Lane Holsworth and Cole Grenier, who also picked up the mound win with three strikeouts while scattering six hits.

Legends Upend

Redbirds In

Season Finale

Marinette didn’t have much going for itself at the plate last Wednesday as the Appleton Legends came to Pedersen Ball Park and handed the home team a 9-1 loss to close the regular season. The Redbirds lone score of the contest came in the seventh as Jordan Rasner brought in Pat Wollard, who led the team offensively for the day with two hits. Scott Eldredge and Todd Olsen were the only other two Marinette players to hit safely in the game.
