Peshtigo & Coleman Claim Conference Golf Titles

Issue Date: May 17, 2018

Peshtigo Golfers Run Away With Packerland Title

The Peshtigo Bulldogs are the Packerland Conference champions in their first year in the conference after winning the Gibraltar Invite on Tuesday.

The Bulldogs have three first team golfers and one on the second team. Bryce Jacobson and Trent Carriveau were the conference's two best golfers, with respective nine-round averages of 36.4 and 39.3. Jacobson took home golfer of the year honors.

After Oconto's Andrew Westphal's 41.3 average, Jordan Carvenough's 41.7 was the fourth best in the conference. Ty Davis made the second team with a 44.1 average. Tyler Lund was one spot out of the second team with a 45.3.

"Our team set two big team goals this season," Peshtigo coach Kyle Cheney said. "Packerland Conference Champions and to qualify for the state tournament at University Ridge in Madison. It feels good to have the first completed, and to now set our sights on getting down to state."

The Bulldogs will compete at regionals Tuesday at Golden Sands Golf Course in Cecil.

Oconto was third in the conference as a team, behind Sevastopol and Peshtigo.

On Tuesday, Jacobson shoot a 77, with rounds of 38 and 39. Carriveau shot an 82, Carvenough shot an 85 and Davis had a 90. Lund rounded out the Bulldog scores with a 95.

Oconto was third on the day. Westphal shot an 85 overall. Will Sherman finished with a 94. Spencer Leary and Jacob Delzer each shot 98s and Collin Ebben had a 99 for the day.

Cougars Claim M&O Title with Victory at Oak Crest

Coleman won Monday, May 14's Niagara 18-Hole at Oak Crest to wrap up the M&O Conference title, with their team score besting all other teams by at least 45 strokes.

The battle for the M&O's top golfer came right down to the last hole as Coleman's Kasey Casper edged Crivitz's Shane Bauer by a single stroke.

Kasey Casper carded a par 72 for the day, with a 34 on the back nine. Cody Van Hoff shot an 82, Cameron Zirbel had a 96, Peyton Deering finished with 100 and Ryan Terp shot a 101.

For Crivitz, Bauer was the leading golfer, accounting for just 78 of the team's 395 strokes. Mason Marvin shot a 98, Eli Lawrence shot a 106, Abby Barley carded a 113 and Travis Giese finished with 115.

St. Thomas Aquinas Academy finished with a 437 as a team. Tyler Stuart and Christian Hornick shot 94 and 95, respectively, to lead the Cavaliers. Alex Powers finished with 106 and Dominic Poasecki had a 142.

The Wausaukee team shot a 494. Peyton Betts shot a 114 to lead the way. Cooper Rollo shot a 120, Gerard Elfering had a 129 and Peter Durian rounded out the Ranger scores with a 131.

Niagara was fifth at their home event. Josh Goudrea shot a 50 on both the front and back nine to finish at 100 and lead the team. Cole Brown shot a 108, Brooke Schwedersky shot a 150 and Julia Brown carded a 151. Jon Phillips had a 173.

Lena did not qualify for a team score. Dalton Thompson shot a 128 and Brance Bethke carded a 132.

Suring/Gillett had a 526 as a team. Greg Shafmna had a 114, Caleb Lallay shot a 119, John Heroux carded a 143 and Cole Watts shot a 150.

Marines Finish Fourth

at Freedom Mega Meet

Marinette's 338 was good for fourth at the North Eastern Conference Mega-Meet at Irish Waters Golf Course in Freedom on Friday, May 11.

Luxemburg-Casco were the event winners with a 327, followed by Waupaca and Wrightstown. The teams had to face soggy, rainy and cold conditions.

Ty Kretz had the Marines' and event's best score with a 75. Kretz said he played well but had a few preventable mistakes.

"I had a few shots that could have easily been prevented," Kretz said. "My putting has gotten much better in the past two weeks and that's what has been keeping my rounds low. Like I've always been told, "drive for show, putt for dough.'"

Matt Wagner shot a 77, Wes Knutson had an 86, Chas Ferm shot a 100 and Dan Hengel rounded out the Marine scores at 120.

"The match didn't really go as planned today," Knutson said. "It was really cold and raining which made it hard to focus. Although Matt and Ty played great, there is definitely some room for improvement for me and Chas if we want to accomplish what we want to this year."

Oconto Falls was eighth of 10 teams with a 371. Ryan Morris shot an 85. Clayton Rathsack and Chase Pecha tied at 93, Odin Halvorsen shot an even 100 and Evan Jaeger shot a 109.

Marines Top 10 Team Oconto Falls Invite

Marinette won the 10-team Oconto Falls Invite at River Island on Thursday, May 10 with a team score of 334.

Marinette had the day's two best golfers in Ty Kretz and Matt Wagner, who shot 75 and 80, respectively.

"I shot a 75, but it could have been lower," Kretz said. "I missed a few short putts and missed many greens, but I was able to get up and down for par."

Wagner described his front nine as "awful," but said of his 36 on the back nine, "the 36 makes me feel very confident going into the conference meet. As far as the team goes, the first-place finish was great to see again. Seeing the other guys shoot good scores is always good to see."

Chas Ferm shot an 89 and Wes Knutson finished at 90, while Dan Hengel had a 116.

"It was awesome to get out and play in the nice weather," Knutson said. "I could have improved my own game very easily by focusing more on my short putts and straightening out a couple of my tee box shots."

Hengel said he did "better thane expected," and said he's gaining more confidence in his swing and stance as the year goes on.

Oconto Falls shot a 372 as a team. Payton Rathsack's 86 was a team-best, followed by Ryan Morris with a 92, Odin Halvorsen's 96 and Chase Pecha's 98. Camden Jackson shot a 124.

Bulldogs Remain Undefeated in Packerland Play

Peshtigo was the best team in the Packerland on Thursday, May 10, though Oconto had the best individual golfer at Little River Country Club.

The Bulldogs shot a 155 as a team, with no golfer over 43 on the nine-hole course. Trent Carriveau, Bryce Jacobson and Jordan Carvenough each shot a 38 for Peshtigo, while Ty Davis shot a 41 and Tyler Lund had a 43.

"It was a total team effort that led to an impressive nine-hole score of 155," Bulldogs coach Kyle Cheney said. "It's very encouraging and exciting that our players have been consistently posting the scores needed to accomplish our team goal as we quickly approach the WIAA State Golf Tournament."

Oconto's Andrew Westphal shot a 37 to lead all golfers, as Oconto finished third-best in the conference behind Peshtigo and Sevastopol.

Jacob Delzer had a 44, Spencer Leary shot a 50, Will Sherman carded a 53 and Dawson Dionne's 63 rounded out the Blue Devil scores.

Peshtigo freshmen Adam Bauman and Maija Carriveau each shot 44 on the nine holes.

"The will both be valuable members of our varsity golf team in coming years," Cheney said.

Coleman Claims Nine Hole Match at Hunters Glenn

Wausaukee hosted eight teams at Hunter's Glen for a nine-hole competition on Friday, May 11, with Coleman again pacing the M&O.

The Cougars shot a 160 as a team, beating second-place Crivitz by 11 strokes. Cody Van Hoff led the team with a 37, followed by Casey Casper's 38 and Austin Marquardt's 39. Peyton Deering finished with 46 and Cameron Zirbel had a 47.

Crivitz's Shane Bauer led the field with a 35 on the front nine, one under par. He was the only golfer to beat par.

Niagara's 255 put them sixth. Cole Brown finished with a 52, followed by Julia Brown's 59. Jon Phillips finished with a 69, Brooke Schwedersky carded a 75 and Josh Goudreau shot an 83.

Lena and Oneida Nation did not have qualifying rosters. For Lena, Brance Bethke shot a 72 and Dalton Thompson finished with a 64.

Maroons Claim Silver at Escanaba Invite

Menominee came in second at the Escanaba Invitational on Thursday, May 10, with a large amount of separation between them and third place.

Menominee finished with a 416, 13 strokes back of the hosts, but 60 strokes ahead of third-place Munising.

Josie Hofer's 99 was the best on the team, followed by Arikah Bellisle with a 103 and Emma Hofer's 104. Olivia Badker had a 110 and Erica Schloegel shot a 113.

Menominee's Conrad Berger shot a 134 for the boys.
