Kinder and gentler"

Darkness is coming earlier in the evenings, and the sun is staying abed longer every morning. That will keep happening until Friday, Dec. 21, which the calendar says is the First Day of Winter. Kind of hard to believe winter isnt here yet, considering how cold it's been, and how icy side roads, sidewalks and parking lots are. Hate to think of what Old Man Winter has in store for us when he does finally arrive.

FAREWELL, PRESIDENT BUSH

The nation is in official mourning over the passage of George H.W. Bush, 41st President of the United States, from this Earth and onto the pages of history at the age of 94. He is remembered as a gentle man and a gentleman in the truest sense of the words. He and his wife, Barbara, had been married for 73 years when she passed away in April of this year, and as is common in long, long marriages, he did not linger long after her passing.

He has the distinction of being the only United States President to have a son also be elected to that office, and we're told some of his final words before passing were used to tell that son - George W. Bush - that he loved him.

During his presidency he expressed hope that America would become "a kinder, gentler nation." His four year term saw the end of the Cold War with Communist Russia (the former Soviet Union), and liberation of Kuwait from an Iraq invasion in the 100-hour war of 1991.

His public service started when he enlisted an the United States Navy on his 18th birthday to fight in World War II. He survived having his plane show down over Japan. He entered the policital arena in the 1960s and was elected to the first of his two terms in Congress in 1967. He subsequently held various positions, including being head of the CIA, ambassador o the United Nations and envoy to China before serving as Vice President during the two terms of President Ronald Reagan.

He served only one term as President. He was elected in 1989 and lost to Bill Clinton in 1993. But after that loss he and Clinton reportedly became close friends and partnered to raise funds for victims of natural disasters.

Would that we had more men like him in public office - men who encouraged all of us to be good people, and set the example by being a good person himself.

President Donald Trump described George Bush, Senior, as: ""a high-quality man who truly loved his family." He ordered a national day of mourning for the late president on Wednesday, Dec. 5, with all government offices to be closed. Flags on public buildings will be flown at half mast for 30 days as a sign of respect.

CHRISTMAS IS COMING

Hannukah, the Jewish Festival of Lights, is here. Started Sunday night, Dec. 2.

For those who are counting, Christmas is only 20 days off.

As most of us know, Christmas celebrates the birth of Christ, the Light of the World.

So there's good reason for all the beautiful lights we get to enjoy at this time of year.

In addition to personal family gatherings and holiday preparations, there are still numerous community events to enjoy. A few are listed below, but watch the bulletin boards, and watch the ads for events that aren't mentioned. Lots of bake sales and cookie exchanges are scheduled, and taking advantage of those for home baked goodies can make your holiday peparations easier.

POUND PARADE OF LIGHTS

The 11th annual Pound Community Christmas Parade of Lights will wind is way through the village starting at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8, and be followed by an after the parade social at the Pound Community Center with coffee and cider, chili and sweets, all free of charge. Mr. and Mrs. Santa Claus will be there handing out treats for kids and making the list of naughty and nice. Members of the Coleman High School band and choir are expected to provide some musical entertainment. No charge for either the parade or the social, but donation of a non-perishable item for local food pantries is appreciated.

To enter a parade float, contact Katie's Sub or the Village Clerk for an entry form no later than Friday, Dec. 7. Lineup is on Memorial Drive starting at 4:45 p.m. Anyone wanting to donate chili or a funds can contact Paula Seewald at 920-897-3250, Trish Schutte at 920-897-4307 or Scott Kohl at 920-897-4277.

CHARITY GALA

"Dashing Thru the Snow" is the theme for the annual Marinette/Menominee Chamber of Commerce Charity Gala at Riverside Golf Club in Menominee on Friday, Dec. 7. There will be silent and live auctions with Nellie Beland as auctioneer. Call 715-735-6681 for more information.

PESHTIGO SCHOOL SENIOR DINNER

The Annual Senior Citizens Christmas Dinner hosted by the Peshtigo School District, will be held Tuesday, Dec. 18 at 12:30 p.m. The dinner is free of charge but it is requested that those attending call the high school office at 715-582-3711 to reserve a seat, and not arrive before 12:15 p.m. as student meals are being served prior to that time. Parking will be available on Green Street and Ellis Ave.

REMEMBER! JESUS IS THE

REASON FOR THE SEASON


In this day of political correctness, seems like everyone is bending over backwards to avoid offending non-Christians. Personally believe it's time for those of us who are Christians to express our outrage that those who do not believe have taken over our second holiest day of the year and pushed the Lord Jesus completely out of it.

So non-Christians and athiests get insulted if we display a manger scene on public property. Perhaps it is time for Christians to step up to the plate and get insulted if they do not. Perhaps it's time for us to insist that they either allow public recognition of "The Reason for the Season," or ignore it completely.

Perhaps we should take up our duty as defenders of the faith. Maybe God is waiting for us to come to his defense. There are plenty of messages in the Bible that he expects us to do just that.

We all know there are sins of omission as well as sins of commisison. If we stay silent in the face of insults to our beliefs are we committing a sin of omission?

Tell merchants you are offended if clerks insist on "Happy Holidays" instead of "Merry Christmas."

Tell your community leaders you want some recognition of the Reason For the Season in the Christmas decorations that your tax dollars help pay for, even if its only in the form of a special star, or wishes for "Peace On Earth, Good Will To Men."

Tell your school board and your school administrator that you are offended when they have "winter break" instead of Christmas Vacation, and "Winter Concert" instead of "Christmas Concert." If they want to believe it's all a myth, that's their business, but they have no right to insult your beliefs!

At the very least, if you and your family do not go to church regularly, a least once during the Christmas season go to a church service or a church Christmas program, attend one of the living nativity programs if possible, or at least pay homage at a life size manger scene somewhere along the way and tell your children the story of the First Christmas.

And do be sure to display a manger scene in your own home or yard decorations, even if it's only a picture. That's really far more important than a Christmas tree!

After all, this holiday is to celebrate the birth of Jesus, and it's only right to wish Him a happy birthday.

WHO WAS THE PILOT?

Speaking of Christmas stories, heard about a youngster who had been learning about the first Christmas, and the Bible in general. He came home and was telling Mom about Jesus' birth in that stable in Bethlehem, the shepherds who had been watching their flocks by night, the visit of the three wise men, and finally the flight into Egypt. And he proudly remembered that the pilot for that flight was named Pontius!

CLEAN THAT GLASS

If you feel a need to polish up the mirrors and interior glass in your home for the holidays, you really should try this window washing solution prescribed by my friend Deanie, who always prided herself on having sparkling windows.

Mix 2 cups of water, 1/4 cup of rubbing alcohol, 1 tablespoon amonia and 2 drops of plain Dawn dishwashing detergent and clean away. Gets off all sorts of grease, haze ad smudges. You can wring the cloth out well and use it on TV and computer screens also.

SHINING CRYSTAL

Just discovered a trick that works marvelously to clean fancy dishes and cut glass in tHE dishwasher.

Am the proud owner of a beautiful set of special Christmas dishes with gold trim. Was always afraid to put them in the dishwasher so didn't even use them the last several years.

Got brave this year and decided they will be used. But first the grime from years in storage had to go. Loaded them in the dishwasher. Had a little extra space, so added some gringy cut glass and Depression Glass serving pieces from the china cabinet.

Was about to add the dishwasher detergent that I was afraid would take the gold trim off when a brainstorm hit. Remembered something I had read, and instead put in a half cup of plain vinegar and about a quarter cup of baking soda with water at the hottest setting.

Never before have I seen such shining dishes and sparkling glasware. When there's more time, plan to use that formula for just about everything in the china cabinet.

Word of warning: one of my glass pieces had been glued sometime in the past. Either the hot water or the vinegar/soda combination did a number on the glue. It was all gone, and two halves of that piece were again separated.

COOKIN' TIME

Christmas preparations are underway, and the time we will need snacks on hand or Christmas gifts is coming fast. Here are a few new treats you might want to try.

PUMPKIN CRANBERRY BREAD

1/2 cup (1 stick) unsalted butter, softened

1 cups sugar

3 large eggs, at room temperature

1 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup mashed or canned pumpkin

1-3/4 cups all-purpose flour

1 teaspoon baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

1/2 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon ground ginger

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

1/3 cup milk

1 cup dried sweetened cranberries              

1/2 cup chopped walnuts (optional)

Preheat the oven to 350F. Butter a 9x5-inch loaf pan and line it with parchment paper, if using. In a large mixing bowl and with an electric mixer, beat the butter while gradually adding the sugar. Beat in the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition. Blend in the vanilla and pumpkin. (The mixture may look "curdled" from the pumpkin; that's fine.) In a separate bowl, sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and spices. Blend a third of the dry ingredients into the creamed mixture, followed by half of the milk. Add another third of the dry ingredients, the rest of the milk, then the rest of the dry ingredients, mixing evenly between additions until combined. Fold in the cranberries and walnuts. Scrape the batter into the prepared pan and smooth the top with a spoon. Bake on the center oven rack for about 1 hour, until a tester inserted deep into the center of the bread comes out clean. Cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then turn the bread out and cool on a rack. Makes 10 to 12 servings. These turn out great as muffins, but bake only 12 to 15 minutes.

CRANBERRY BEET BUNDT CAKE

This cake is great at Christmas, but good for any time of year that you need to sneak in an extra vegetable.

Cake Ingredients:

1-1/4 cups dried sweetened cranberries

2-1/2 cups all-purpose flour

1-1/2 teaspoons baking powder

1 teaspoon baking soda

3/4 teaspoon salt

1 teaspoon cinnamon

1/2 teaspoon nutmeg

2-1/4 cups sugar, divided

1 jar or can (16 ounces) beets (pickled or regular), drained

4 large eggs, at room temperature

3/4 cup (1-1/2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened

1/4 cup vegetable oil

2 teaspoons grated orange zest

2 teaspoons grated lemon zest

2 teaspoons vanilla extract

1/2 cup buttermilk

Glaze Ingredients:

2-1/2 cups confectioners' sugar

2 teaspoons grated orange zest

1/4 cup orange juice

1 tablespoon lemon juice

1-1/2 tablespoons unsalted butter, melted

1/4 teaspoon vanilla extract

1 cup finely chopped walnuts, for sprinkling

Butter and lightly flour a 10-inch (12- to 14-cup) Bundt pan, knocking out the excess. Set aside. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees. Put the cranberries into a small bowl and add hot water to cover. Set aside. Sift the flour, baking powder, baking soda, salt, cinnamon, and nutmeg into a large bowl. Set aside. Combine 1 cup of sugar and the drained beets in a food processor. Process for about 30 seconds, to a purée, stopping to scrape down the sides of the bowl once or twice. Set aside. Combine the remaining 1 cups of sugar and the eggs, butter, and vegetable oil in a large bowl. Using an electric mixer, beat on medium-high for 2 to 3 minutes, until light and airy. Blend in the beet purée. Add the orange and lemon zests and the vanilla. Mix briefly. Add half of the dry mixture, then all of the buttermilk, and finally the remaining dry mixture, beating on low after each addition. Drain the cranberries and fold them into the batter. Scrape the batter into the pan, spreading it evenly. Bake on the center oven rack for about 50 minutes.When done, the cake will pull away slightly from the sides of the pan, and a long tester (such as a thin wooden skewer) inserted deep into the center will come out clean. Cool the cake in the pan for 15 minutes. Invert the cake onto a large serving plate and continue to cool. Make the glaze while the cake cools a bit, but put it on while the cake is still warm.

To make the glaze, sift the confectioners' sugar into a large bowl. Add the orange zest, orange juice, and lemon juice and whisk to blend. Add the melted butter and vanilla and whisk again. The glaze should be thick enough to coat the cake without running right off; adjust by adding more orange juice, by the half teaspoon, if it seems thick. Spoon half of the glaze over the cake. Sprinkle with walnuts, then cover with the remaining glaze. Makes 16 servings.

CHRISTMAS SNOWBALL COOKIES

Make these with mini red and green M&Ms for a festive Christmas look through and through. Go ahead and eat the other M&Ms if you must! Or use whatever colors you want. If you use salted butter, add only 1/4 teaspoon salt.

1 cup unsalted butter, slightly softened

1/2 cup powdered sugar

1 teaspoon vanilla

2-1/4 cups all purpose flour

1/2 teaspoon salt

1 cup mini M&Ms

Additional powdered sugar for rolling

Preheat oven to 350 degrees. Line two cookie sheets with parchment paper. Mix butter, the half cup powdered sugar and vanilla with an electric mixer until fluffy. Add flour, salt and keep beating until the dough comes together. This will take a minute or two with a stand mixer,a bit longer with a hand mixer it can take even longer. Stir in the M&Ms. Make tablespoon size balls and place on cookie sheets. Bake for 8 to 10 minutes, or until bottoms are just slightly brown. Remove from oven and cool for just 5-10 minutes, just until you can handle them. Fill a small bowl with powdered sugar and roll each cookie in the sugar until coated. Place on a rack to cool. Once cookies are cooled, you may want to roll them again in more powdered sugar. Cool completely and store in an air tight container. Cookies can be frozen for up to a month, but after defrosting you may want to roll them again in powdered sugar.

Thought for the week: Please Lord, so often I get angry about things that happen in this old World, especially on the political scene. Help me to become a kinder and gentler person - the kind of person who would fill the kinder and gentler nation that George H. W. Bush wished for. But, please, also help me - and all of us - know when to speak up and when to shut up. Amen.
