Born Sept. 30, 1936 in Menominee, Mi., to Martin and Rose (Hendricksen) Rasmussen, she graduated from Stephenson High School and received a Rural Education Degree at Western Michigan University. She married Lawrence "Larry" Gerue on June 14, 1958 at Stephenson Methodist Church and they settled in the Milwaukee area where she taught for several years in the New Berlin Public School system until the family moved to Ashwaubenon in 1973.
She was proud of her Danish ancestry and spent many years writing and sharing with family members a detailed history of the Rasmussen and Hendricksen families. She also wrote about life on the family farm and the joys and hardships of growing up with her parents and four brothers and sisters in which she was the youngest.
Her parents encouraged them not to marry into a farming family and none of them did. They were successful, one being a lawyer, three teachers and a nurse.
They were avid trail bikers, traveled all over Wisconsin and biked and walked many trails, with their favorite of Red Cedar River Trail in Menomonie, Wi., where they could enjoy watching many eagles nesting along the river. They spent many weekends in Door County biking and walking the trails and going antiquing.
Proud of her garden and fresh vegetables, she enjoyed crocheting and embroidery, was active in the Democratic Party and attended many state conventions. She helped Democratic candidates go door to door, stuffing envelopes, making phone calls and was a Democratic Party poll worker for 27 years in Ashwaubenon until her arthritis didn't allow. She was a an active member of the Bethany United Methodist Church where she served on many committees.
She is survived by her husband, Larry; a daughter, Cynthia (Joe) O'Brien; a son, Karl; two grandchildren; two sisters-in law, Alberta Rasmussen and Judith (Jim) Bastien; a brother-in-law, Joseph Morin and many nieces and nephews.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Thomas Rasmussen; three sisters, Martha Cassidy, Rosena Morin and Marian Jones; a sister-in-law, Jeanette Gerue and a brother-in-law, Floyd Cassidy.
A funeral service will be held at Bethany United Methodist Church, 1110 Echo Lane in Ashwaubenon on Saturday, Dec. 22 at 11 a.m., with Rev. Robb McClintock and longtime friend, retired Rev. Patrick Green officiating. Burial will be held on a later date at Stephenson Township Cemetery in the Danish Section. Donations can be made Unity Hospice in her memory.
