Elaine E. (Barkhaus) Kohls, 94, of Fond du Lac, formerly of Gillett, passed away Thursday, Jan. 3, 2019.
Born Dec. 4, 1924 in Bonduel, to Albert and Adela (Graf) Barkhaus, she attended St. Paul Lutheran School and graduated as salutatorian from Bonduel High School. She attended business college in Green Bay and worked at a bank and Dehn's Ice Cream in Bonduel. She met Oscar Kohls at a wedding dance and they were married for 59 years before his passing.
They had three children and worked on one of the largest dairy farms in Oconto County in the 1950's and 60's and was Gillett Town Clerk for 10 years. Devoted to her faith in the Lord, she was privileged to be the first woman member of the Church Council at Immanuel Lutheran Church and was active in LWML, Ladies Aid, Homemakers and other volunteer activities.
When her husband proposed, she asked, "Will you take me traveling?" and in retirement they traveled to 50 states, Germany and Israel and wintered in Texas for 27 years, then later in Florida.
She enjoyed reading, sheepshead, dominoes, and visiting her great-grand-children and was devoted to her family.
She is survived by a sister, Doris Buchholz; daughter, Jean (Don Timpel), Carol Petty and Charles (Tami) Kohls; six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Oscar and a brother, Louis Barkhaus.
Friends and relatives called on the family at Faith United Lutheran Church in Gillett on Monday, Jan. 7 from 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. followed by a funeral service at noon. Pastor John Laatsch officiated with interment in Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery. Memorials are appreciated to Faith United Lutheran Church, 11465 Old U, Gillett, Wi. 54124. Legacy Funeral Home of Gillett assisted the family with arrangements.
