Marinette Legion Takes
Loss At State Opener
The Marinette Legion Post 39 baseball team traveled to Chippewa Falls Friday for the State legion tournament and faced the Rock County boys who took the win 8-5.
It really came down to one rough inning for the Marinette defense which saw the Rock County legion team post eight runs. That inning was fifth inning, where all eight runs occurred, giving Rock County the owner win.
Marinette however did start the game with some good momentum. After two scoreless innings Marinette's hitters went to work establishing a nice lead.
Starting off the third inning's action was Will LaLonde who reached first off an error. With LaLonde making his way into scoring position the Rock County defense saw the bases load up as LaLonde walked home for the first run.
With three runners on Nick Teteak showed up in a big way as he slammed a three RBI triple that scored Trevor Bloch, Trey Bretl and Jaden Werner giving Marinette what should have been enough to keep themselves ahead, but innings later that four run lead would be smashed.
Before the Rock County rally could get started Marinette's Bloch was able to post Marinette's final run of the night, getting to the plate in the fifth off a wild pitch.
Then came that fifth inning and with it a an avalanche of Rock County runners who put together a nine hit inning while pushing across eight.
Werner was given the loss over his four and two thirds innings allowing 11 hits, and five earned runs.
At the plate Marinette was led by Teteak with a one of three performance with three RBIs. Bloch was one of two.
The loss sent Marinette to the losers bracket were they were set to face off against Oconomowoc.
Second Loss At State
The Marinette Legion Baseball team was eliminated from the state tournament last Saturday falling to the Oconomowoc boys by way of a 5-2 final verdict.
Oconomowoc was first to jump onto the score board doing so on a RBI single from Nate Platter over the opening frame and an RBI ground out by Cole Ninmann during the fourth inning.
Marinette struggled all game long to get their hitters warmed up as by games end they had only amassed five hits.
A couple of those hits occurred during the sixth where Trevor Bloch got things going with a run off a Jaden Werner single. Werner scored soon after, crossing home on a single from Nick Teteak. But that would be it for Marinette who left a runner in position with the score tied 2-2.
The seventh was all Oconomowoc as the eventual winner retook the lead with a three run push. They did so with an RBI single from Platter. Platter went home on a costly error while Miller Wallace wrapped things up with a run off a groundout.
Bretl was handed the loss for Marinette giving up 10 hits and five earned runs while striking out seven.
Platter was the games winning pitcher with five hits allowed and three walks while striking out four.
At the plate Marinette was led by Teteak with a one of two showing and an RBI. Werner was one for one with one run and one RBI while Bloch went one of three with a run.
