Peshtigo Takes Down Marinette in Season Opener

Issue Date: December 5, 2019

Peshtigo Establishes Tri-City Dominance Over Marinette

The Peshtigo Bulldogs faced off against the MArinette Marines Tuesday night, defeating the cross town rivals in a big way 78-51.

"There were a lot of nerves coming into this match up," said Peshtigo Head Coach Nate Motkowski. "But thats to be expected with the first game of the year. We only returned two guys from last year with varsity experience. We knew it was going to be a little crazy at the start. After a couple minutes they took a breath and relaxed and got back to doing what we needed to do."

The dominant victory was keyed in with an amazing second half for the Bulldogs. Thats not to say they didn't play good ball over the first half.

During the opening frame the Bulldogs fired their way to 36 points while holding Marinette to 28 points.

But where the Bulldogs really distinguished themselves was over the second half where they out shot the Marinette boys for 42 points while holding the Marines to just 23.

"We tried to focus on moving the ball with passing," said Motkowski. "We didn't want to put the ball on the ground too much tonight and we didn't. I think some of the younger guys got a little nervous and spent too much time dribbling the ball."

The evenings top performer was Marinette's Asia Polazzo who hit for 25 Bulldog points. Matthew Maye chipped in five to the effort while Dylan Poquette added two.

Peshtigo was led by Tanner Marquardt with 15 points and Cade Tackier with 11. Muzak Salem pitched in six points to the effort.

"Cade is going to catch a lot of eyes this season," said Motkowski."He had their best defender on humanoid i was proud of how the overcame the define and got some of the otters guys into the game. Everybody scored tonight except for two guys. He had a ton of rebounds too."

"I though early on we weren't making shot and Peshtigo made a bit of a run," said Marinette Matt Joost. "Offensively I think we did much better than this past weekend. We only had 10 turnover all night. There were jus too many other things we didn't do well. They figured out our press early as well. We just didn't have any defense over the second half. But there were a lot of positives to this loss."

Oconto Takes Win Over Crivitz To Open Season

The Oconto Blue Devils took a hard fought win over a tough and ready Crivitz Wolverine squad as the home court Blue Devils came away with the win 65-59.

Baxter ended up tying the Twin City Eagles' Justin Morrison for top scoring honors. The two competitors both posted 24 points each for their respective teams.

The Eagles also saw Reed Garcia post 21 points.

Following up Baxter on the STAA stat sheets was Ethan Russell with 17 points and Ethan Braley with 12 points. Alex Powers posted 10 on the night.
