From our readers

Issue Date: September 16, 2020

Dear Editor,

Once again, I am driven off my comfortable lawn chair in an obligation to address the crimes against logic and distortions of the truth by our Country Cousin. I'm referring to the "On the Soapbox" comments in last week's PT (Sept. 9, 2020) about gun control. Dear Cousin, do you actually believe Joe Biden and company are, if elected, going to come after our guns? Just exactly how is that going to work on the streets and in our homes? First of all, why didn't Joe and Barack take back our guns while in power for 8 years? The reason I use the terms "crimes against logic" (which is the title of a book) should be obvious. How will Joe take away our guns? Using the local sheriffs department? I don't think so. They likely all own guns, and more importantly, they all live in our communities and are our neighbors. Think about it for a second, if you think the current protests around the country are out of control, just imagine what protests against taking guns would look like. Remember the images form Lower Michigan where protestors brought guns to the state capital in protest of Covid restrictions. I can assure you with a great deal of certainty that protests would suddenly become rampant and immensely patriotic. Don't you agree? Is there anyone in the tri-county area that doesn't have a place to stash their guns?

Like most local residents, I recently receive in the mail postcards touting Joe has been over by the "radical left." Just a minute, if that were anywhere near true wouldn't Bernie Sanders be the democratic candidate? Included on the postcard was a picture of AOC, Alexandria Ocasio Cortez. Am I to understand that Trump supporters are afraid of a 30 year old bartender from New York City?

My point is this, there is so much lying and misinformation going on that it is hard to get at the facts and the truth. In fact, I fear if people can go to hell for lying, that place will soon be crowded with Americans of all stripes, to include corporate execs, politicians, political parties, racists, anti-union supporters, gun control nuts, etc.

Please be aware that I am all in on changing things for the better form working class people. On that I believe we agree. I just don't think Trump, the rich people, and conservatives are going to take us there. Here's why. By definition conservative means "to maintain what currently exists." Do you really think millionaire Trump understands your condition and desires? He has never worried about being out of money as most of us have.

So while most of us disagree on many things, we agree on many more. For example, don't we all agree that everyone should have access to basic medical care? The only ones who aren't guaranteed it are the middle class workers. The poor have it through Medicaid. The rich have it by definition of what it means to be rich. Every other country has been able to do it successfully and so can we.

That's all form me for now. Stay safe, and please seek the truth, for you know what the truth will do for you.

Sincerely,

Sidney A Konnell

Dear Editor,

It's been over a week since Atlantic Magazine published confirmed reporting that documented President Trump calling our military/veterans "suckers" and "losers."  We have yet to hear from Mike Gallagher, whose devotion to Trump has been fervent and unwavering. No, not a word; and yes, silence is assent.

My uncle, Lester Marsh, was KIA (New Guinea; December 12, 1942). In one of those unbelievable coincidences, I found out some years ago that my wife's Uncle Clarence Schmidt was the medic who attended him as he died. With tears in his eyes, Clarence told me, "I am so sorry, Jon. I'll never forget Lester. He knew he wouldn't make it; all I could do was hold his hand. I have never met a braver man with a deeper faith in God."

Uncle Lester and Uncle Clarence were not Losers. They were not Suckers. They were loyal Americans who did their duty. Like Trump, to whom Gallagher pledges his unwavering fealty, he seems not to understand that. Surprising, because Mike served and should know better. Is this the way Presidents and 8th District legislators should behave? NO, and neither Trump nor Gallagher deserve reelection.

I am proud of my uncles' and my own military service. I respectfully ask voters of the 8th District to choose Joe Biden and Amanda Stuck on November 3. Our national security depends upon it.

Dear Editor:

I am speaking to and describing the individual who stole the Trump sign that was in front of my driveway on Highway 141, Amberg. You, or someone like you, has taken my signs for many years and I need to let you know what your actions show you to be.

You are a coward who operates in the dark to deny freedom to those who have political positions differing from you even though these are posted on private property.

You are a fascist who feels that hatred for a duly elected president gives you the right to destroy and deface private property. You are acting against democracy and the values of decency that have characterized our nation.

If you had the courage to come to my house and have a dialogue with me on why I should hate Trump like you do, I would answer that it would be good if you were against murdering unborn babies, defunding police, anarchism, attacking people with a  MAGA hat, burning, looting, rioting, and no consequences for those who do those things.

Your actions are despicable. Our country offers legal ways for you  to express yourself. Why not avail yourself of these? It seems that your political positions do not bear the light of day.

Letter To The Editor

Fake News

I now know what Trump means by by the term "Fake News" After being in Green Bay on a tight schedule, I was watching the clock quite closely, so my timing is accurate. I also thought our local TV news was accurate and fair. I watched all these local stations report on the Trump Floatilla on the Fox River this past Sunday. They all reported that the bridges were up on Main and Walnut streets due to a parade. Fox 11, at first didn't even acknowledge what was happening - just that the bridges were up. Later, they updated their report recognizing a parade. One station said there were dozens of boats out on a nice day. None of them spent more than 15 seconds on the subject and they did show a couple pictures.

Here's what I saw from our spot just upstream from the Main street bridge by the museum. First, the news said nothing about dozens of trucks driving around and over the bridges before the parade all decorated with flags and banners. Second, they failed to report the banks of the Fox were lined with people wearing Trump gear, singing to music, cheering, 3-4 deep as far as I could see. Third, they failed to report that the parade lasted 45-50 minutes one way prior to returning back frorm Voyageur Park. How many boats can go under a bridge 3-4 deep in 50 minutes? It was dozens, but they didn't say how many. The word hundreds would have been more accurate. A thousand boats would have been a good ball park number. During the 50 minutes, there were always 20-50 boats depending on the size between the bridges. The cheering that went on was loud with chants of "four more years," etc. From my my view point, I could see a couple thousand Trump supporters and no Biden protestors. The whole thing was very peaceful with no store windows being broken, fires, looters, or police being attacked as Republicans don't do stuff like that. Oh, something I thought was newsworthy is that all of this took place during a Packer-Viking football game. All these people were more interested in a Trump parade than football in Green Bay. Maybe the NFL should get out of politics and go back to football.

This is what I saw and a little different than what the news reported. Is there anything that we can accept as accurate on the news and in the polls? I don't trust the national news and now I don't trust local news.

P.S. There were 2 ducks swimming by us in the weeds and I heard comments that "there goes Biden's Floatilla."

Roger Pillath
