Niagara & Oconto Win Conference Championships

Issue Date: October 21, 2021

Area Volleyball

Niagara Takes Win

at Lena Triangular;

Secures M&O

Championship

The Niagara Badgers took the win in Lena defeating the Wildcats, then the Gillett Tigers to secure the triangular meet win. The win also secured the M&O championship for the Badgers. Lena defeated Gillett in the nights closer.

"My team came into tonight's matches on a mission," said Niagara head coach Carol St. Arnauld. "Though we lost our first two conference matches, we haven't loss a conference  match since late August, and wanted to continue that trend to the end.  Our goal was to solely win Conference Champs and my girls did just that!  I can't begin to explain what a special group this team is.  Their support for one another and willingness to improve upon their play is outstanding.  This team has some great talent but they have an even larger heart."

Niagara started the night's action with a 25-11 win over the Wildcats, then went on to defeat the Wildcats in game two 25-17. A quick 17-6 third set gave Niagara the match win.

"What was really special about tonight is that every girl on our bench was able to not only get game time but each had a great play," said St. Arnauld. "This team represents what every coach wants - they give 110%, never give up and support each other on a continuous basis.  I have really enjoyed coaching this group and am looking forward to what this group can accomplish in the post season."

Against the Tigers the Badgers cruised to a 25-10 first set win before bagging the second 25-10 and the third 25-11.

Niagara's Bailey Pearson posted 17 kills, four block, one assist, three digs and five aces. Erin Lukowicz had six aces with her seven kills, one assist and four digs. Morgan Borchardt added up 10 kills, one block, 36 assists, 18 digs and a team leading seven aces. Mallory Sanicki made a mark at the net with 13 kills and two assists.

Lena secured the second place finish in the nights standings a 24-12 third set victory over the Wildcats.

"This team can pass and they can serve well," said Lena head coach Heidi Place. "We practiced improving the serve even more but when we got to the game tonight we didn't see that make it to the court. This team is always getting better. They can't dwell on mistakes and just keep moving forward."

Lena's effort during the nights competition was led by Natalie McNurlan who tallied up 10 kills and four aces. Alabama Lambert nine kills, two digs and four aces. Mel  Cops posted 11 kills, one block, one assist and two aces. Makynna Herald finished the night with 33 assists, three digs, one kill and one ace.

Crivitz's Maddy Welty added up 15 kills on the evening while also getting three digs, one assist, and two aces. Lilli Watson added up two kills, 16 digs, one assist and one ace. Nilea Guns scored six aces while getting two kills, one dig and one assist. Lexi Franzmeier posted 28 assists, 14 digs, five kills and six aces.

Peshtigo and Oconto

Compete at Packerland

Volleyball Tourney

The Peshtigo Bulldogs and the Oconto Blue Devils took part in the Packerland Volleyball tourney Saturday with Sevastopol and GB NEW Lutheran also taking part.

Match one saw Peshtigo defeat NEW Lutheran 25-20 and 25-10. Against Sevastopol in match two the Bulldogs were defeated by the Pioneers 25-10 in set three.

Oconto took on Sevastopol and won 25-12, lost the second set, then won the third 18-16.

"This was an awesome game for the crowd to watch," said Oconto head coach Adrian De La Cruz. "It was a little closer than i wanted it though. It was a great match up between two really great teams tonight. I don't want to play Sevastopol again. That game was just too close. We stepped up when we needed to tonight. Thats what great teams do. They rise to the occasion. We did have little nerves tonight but the girls pushed through those troubles. As long as everyone is proud of what they do here they will carry that pride into the rest of their lives."
