Post 39 Shuts out Red Wave in Holiday MatchupIssue Date: July 7, 2022 The pitching performance of Marinette Legion's Austin Burnside was the X-factor as Post 39 shut out Menominee in a 3-0 Fourth of July rivalry win.
Marinette scored the only three runs of the game in the third inning. With one out, Logan Shallow and Braeden McMahon were hit by pitches from Kennison Boivin and Preston Rehwinkel reached on an error.
Adam Lemery broke the scoreless deadlock with a sacrifice fly and Rupert brought in two runners with a double.
The third inning was the only inning where Boivin was unable to dance around danger. Marinette left a lot of runners on the basepaths, including stranding runners at third base in each of its final three offensive innings.
On the other end, Burnside was as sharp as it gets. Menominee put a runner at third in both the first and third but they both ended up stranded.
Menominee went three up, three down in both the fourth and fifth and stranded a runner at third in the sixth.
The Red Wave made one last push in the seventh. Boivin and Kaeden Calcari both reached to lead off the inning and bring the tying run to the plate, but the next three batters went down in order to wrap up Marinette's 3-0 victory.
Rupert was 2-3 with a walk and two RBIs to lead the offensive charge for Marinette.
Burnside pitched all seven innings, allowing four hits and four walks but never allowing a run to cross the plate. He struck out four.
None of Boivin's three runs were earned. He allowed four walks, four hits, and four hit batters. He struck out five over six innings of work.
Marinette Legion Split a
Pair with Sheboygan
Marinette Legion Post 39 took one of two from a pair of hard-fought baseball games against Sheboygan on Thursday.
Marinette lost 6-3 in the series opener but bounced back to snag a 4-3 victory in the rubber match.
Marinette scored all four of its game-two runs in the fourth inning. A two-RBI double from Joey Olsen got things started, and Austin Burnside found a hole for a two-RBI single three batters later.
That gave Marinette a 4-2 lead after four, with Sheboygan also scoring twice in the fourth. That lead held until the seventh.
After Marinette was held scoreless in the top half of the seventh, Sheboygan threatened in the bottom half.
Kyle Wesser started the frame off with a single, scoring on a two-out double. With the tying run standing at second, Lebich got a popup to shut things down and pick up the save for his 1.2 innings of work.
Sean Christiansen got the win, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks. He struck out seven over 5.1 innings.
Olsen went 2-3 with two RBIs and a run and Burnside was 1-4 with two RBIs. Christiansen and Lane Whiting each scored runs.
Sheboygan took game one with a three-run rally in the seventh inning.
Marinette Post 39 held a 1-0 lead after three, with a Whiting run the difference.
Sheboygan got on the board in the fourth and scored another in the fifth, but a Lebich run in the fifth kept Marinette tied through five.
Again in the sixth, the teams were neck-and-neck. When Sheboygan scored one, so too did Marinette, with Whiting reaching on a fielder's choice and scoring on an error.
The seventh inning saw Sheboygan finally pull away. A walk and a single started things off, and after one run had already come in, Ty Voight delivered some big insurance with a two-out, two-RBI double.
Marinette put runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the seventh, but two strikeouts looking ended the contest.
Adam Lemery took the loss, allowing three earned over two innings. Landon Beyer allowed one run in .2 innings and Carson Erdman was solid as a starter, allowing two runs (one earned) over 4.1 innings.
Whiting was 1-3 with two runs scored and Lebich was 1-3 with one run scored.
Marinette Records
Walk Off Win
Over DePere Legion
An eight-run second inning by De Pere nearly put a damper on what was an otherwise strong performance by the Marinette Legion baseball team on Sunday, but Marinette scored three runs in the seventh inning to scratch out a 10-9 victory.
Things got off to a good start for Marinette in the first, with Austin Burnside and Logan Shallow hitting singles. After a sacrifice and a popout that didn't bring home a runner, Adam Lemery walked to load the bases.
Marinette pitcher Lane Whiting then smoked a double to bring home all three and stake himself to an early lead. Marinette scored one more in the second when Ashton Lebich scored on a bases loaded walk, but the second inning was a bit of a runaway train on the other side.
After the leadoff hitter struck out, the next nine De Pere batters reached base, although it wasn't for a lack of command for the most part. The first two to reach were on walks, but then the next seven hitters reached on hits to keep the train moving along.
After Lucas Bartelt reached on a single in the 10th plate appearance of the inning, Marinette went to the pen, bringing Shallow in to calm things down. That's exactly what he did. One runner scored on a fielder's choice, but he would set down two of the next three hitters to keep Marinette in the ballgame.
After a scoreless third, Marinette scored three runs in the fourth to cut into the lead. Again Whiting came through in a big spot, bringing in two of the runs, Braeden McMahon and Preston Rehwinkel, on a single.
De Pere also got one in the fourth, and the two teams' pitching held serve in the fifth and sixth.
In the seventh, trailing 9-7, Whiting was finally retired in a big spot to lead off the inning, but the hitters behind him came through. Alex Rupert singled to get things going, but the team was down to its last out when Joe Olsen struck out.
Lebich and Burnside walked to load the bases, and Shallow reached on an error that tied the game.
McMahon delivered the knockout blow when he singled to walk things off, 10-9.
Shallow was rock-solid out of the bullpen, allowing just one run over 5.2 innings. He allowed four hits and struck out two.
McMahon was 2-3 with a run and the winning RBI. He reached base four times in the game. Burnside was 2-4 with a walk and three runs scored and Whiting was 3-4 with five RBIs.
Red Wave Splits
Doubleheader
With Iron Mountain
Menominee split a pair against Iron Mountain on Wednesday, which included winning game two by a 10-5 score.
After a 5-2 loss in the opener, the Menominee bats started to pop in the second game.
Menominee scored five runs in the first two innings to take a 5-3 lead. In the first, Wyatt Riley singled to lead off the inning. After Zach Starzynski and Ethan Russell walked, Kennison Boivin cracked a two-out single to score two runs.
After Iron Mountain scored three in the bottom of the frame, Menominee regained its advantage in the top of the second.
Matt Mellinger walked from the leadoff spot. After outs from the next two hitters, Adrian Mercier brought home Mellinger with a single. Starzynski reached on an error and came around to score to make it 5-3.
A few quiet innings later, Iron Mountain tied it at five in the fifth, but the Iron Mountain pitching staff couldn't hold the lead.
The Red Wave scored five runs in the sixth despite just one hit, a two-RBI single from Jimmy Coldren.
The rest of the runs were the product of four walks and one hit batter.
Riley finished 1-4 with two runs scored, Starzynski was 0-2 with two walks and three runs scored, and Coldren was 1-3 with two RBIs. Mellinger went 0-2 with two walks and two runs.
In game one, Iron Mountain also scored three runs in the first inning. The first two batters of the inning walked before a two-RBI double from the three-hole. Two more runs crossed in the third.
For Menominee, Coldren was 1-4 with a run scored in the third inning. Gable Buck scored the team's other run.
