From our readers

Dear Editor:

This is the time of the year when we reflect and give thanks for our many blessings. It has been a difficult year for many and there may be those who are going to have a difficult time getting in to the celebrations of the upcoming season. The need for food is something that we all have and these poor economic times and the rising cost of food has added to the financial burden of many individuals and families in our area.

The Peshtigo Food Pantry is a community based organization that assists individuals and families with food needs. The ability to do this would not be possible without the support of the community and surrounding area. During this time of Thanksgiving the Board of Directors of the Peshtigo Food Pantry would like to thank all the individuals and businesses of the surrounding area for the continued support of this much needed community service.

The Food Pantry currently has over 90 registered family units and assists 80-90 families each month from the City of Peshtigo and the Towns of Porterfield, Grover and Peshtigo. Donations from individuals, through either food sources that are delivered to the Pantry or put into the food collection boxes and through food drives, such as Scouting for Food and Stamping out Hunger and those that are held at local schools, churches and area businesses, are greatly appreciated and we want to thank you for your continued support. Monetary donations given to the pantry, by individuals, businesses, churches and organizations, through charity events or “just because you care,” allows the Pantry to supplement and provide perishable foods such as meats, fresh vegetables, fruits and breads.

The Peshtigo Food Pantry is open for distribution the 1st and 3rd Wednesday of each month from 10:00-12:00. If you or someone you know has food needs come to the Pantry during these times for assistance. For emergency food needs call 715-923-9592 or 715-582-0389.

On Behalf of the Board of Directors of the Peshtigo Food Pantry, once again, thanks to all who are supporting the Peshtigo Food Pantry through food and monetary donations. You are having a positive impact on our community and surrounding area by supporting this much needed community service and assisting families with food needs.

Happy Thanksgiving and Merry Christmas,

RuthAnn Sandberg and Suzy Rudolph,

Peshtigo Food Pantry Co-Directors

“Thanksgiving Prayer”

Our Dear Heavenly Father,

Help us to:

Live for Thee,

Love Thee,

Worship Thee,

Please Thee,

Praise Thee,

Serve Thee,

Thankfully,

Now.... and

eternally.

Amen.

********

“Father, We Thank You”

With grateful hearts

We come to Thee,

With folded hands

On bended knee.

For daily needs

Thou does supply,

For peace and joy,

Your watchful eye.

For family, friends,

And others dear,

We thank you, Father,

This time of year.

For freedoms we have

In this great nation,

For sacrifices made,

Bless all their relation.

For all the beauty

Of the earth,

Your boundless mercies

Beyond all worth.

For Your sinless life

While here with man,

For Your death

On the cross,

Thanks again, and again.

This short list is only

A very small start,

Of Your bountiful gifts

From Your gracious heart.

So thank You, we love You,

Please forgive us our sin,

May You make us worthy,

To Heaven’s door, enter in.

Both by Joyce Bedora of Krakow,

former Peshtigo resident

JOYFULLY GIVE THANKS

Thanksgiving Day is near

We search our hearts once more,

for blessings of this year,

adding the years before.

Liberty, we still have

to read God’s Holy Book

While sharing Jesus’ light

we find His loving look.

Souls feed on Living Bread

to know Him and believe.

Joyfully Give God thanks

for blessings we receive.

Lois Wiederhoeft,

Peshtigo

“Thank You, God”

Thank You, God, for sun lit skies

For chocolate fudge and homemade pies.

Thank You for families far and near

And the memories of those no longer here.

Thank You for friends - some old and some new

I care for them - they care for me, too.

Thank You for winter and the shimmering snow

Thank You for the holidays and the church where they go.

Thank You for spring and the soft rainy weather

The plans that we make as we gather together.

Then summer is here with the sun and the heat

Lemonade, popsicles and kids with bare feet.

Thank You for autumn and the leaves that will fall

School will begin so shop at the mall.

The simple things every day that we live

Normal and happy and much love to give.

Thank You, God, for what You do

For the comfort You bring when we’re talking to You.

Without You it would not be the same

Thank You, God, hallowed be Thy Name.

To the Editor:

“Muslims, Jesus and Truth”

There is not a lot of thievery in openly Muslim societies. When I was in the US Air Force, stationed in Germany, one of my friends was sent to Saudi Arabia on temporary duty. While he was there, a man was caught stealing an apple. His punishment? His right hand and his left heal were cut off publicly in the town square! This form of justice does have some positive points.

In fact, my friend told me that you could take out your wallet as you enter a shop, lay it down on a counter, and walk around the store shopping and talking without any worry that you would lose the wallet. Because of swift and drastic punishment, social order is strictly maintained and society looks good on the outside. But many people live in terror of their law and authorities, and nothing is done to change the hearts or the inside of men. God is viewed as a tyrant judge who lavishes rewards on only a few because they kill and die for Him. Many hold to the teaching that “non-believers” or infidels must forcibly be converted to Islam or be killed. The message of Jesus Christ does not teach this, yet, ironically Jesus is recognized as a prophet of Islam.

Jesus teaches that dying for one’s friends is the highest act of love, but his directive to “turn the other cheek” hardly means that we blow up ourselves and many unsuspecting others to accomplish death. His strong message to His disciples was “by love the world will know that you are my disciples.” No one can be forced to follow Jesus Christ or seek God. Jesus said that the Spirit of His Father would draw them (us) to Him. Jesus said of His death, “If I be lifted up from the earth (on the cross), I will draw all men unto Me.” The Bible teaches that Jesus’ death was just as much for His enemies as for His friends.

One great illustration that brings home these huge differences between Muslim and Christian doctrine is Jesus’ parable of the tares. In the story, an enemy had sown tares (or weeds) in a farmer’s wheat field. [the farmer represented God, the Father] When his servants asked him if he wanted them to pull up those weeds immediately, the “Farmer” said, “No, leave them alone, for if you pull them up now, you will also pull up (and destroy) some of the wheat.” Thus the wheat and tares grow up together, side by side. At “harvest time” they are separated, the tares are bundled and burned and the wheat gathered into the barn.

In this story we see that there is punishment but that God waits until the very end, giving all men a chance to repent and accept and find His love. Jesus, our Lord (and prophet of Islam) said to us that He is “the Way, the Truth and the Life.” As we follow Him, there is no need to force or kill, only share and love.

Amberg
