Letter to Editor:

Re: Thank you from Pastor Fred’s Food Pantry

I want to take a moment to tell our faithful donors and benefactors what has been going on this past year. We are, first of all, grateful to the dozens of volunteers who help distribute food at the twice-monthly pantries. They also help unload and store the products which we have delivered periodically. They are a dedicated crew and the Food Pantry would not exist without them.

During 2011 we had 24 dates at which we distributed more than 80,000 pounds of food. Each pantry distributes about 135 boxes. These go to families, elderly couples or individuals. Sixty-five percent of our product comes from Feeding America, a nationwide non-profit distribution network. We pay 19 cents per pound handling fee to Feeding America for most products. In some instances, we purchase case lots of canned goods for a reasonable charge. A trucking company is contracted to pick up the food in Milwaukee and deliver it to Amberg.

We receive a delivery once a month from TEFAP, The Emergency Food Assistance Program, in Oconto. This accounts for another 20%, and we purchase locally another 5% of our food. This includes fresh eggs once a month. We also purchased fresh fruit and 3-4 lb. hams for distribution at Christmas. Food drives account for 10% of the food. These are done by US Postal Carriers during their annual food drive, by the Cub Scouts, area churches and other civic and fraternal organizations. We also receive hundreds of 2-lb. packages of venison through the Hunt for the Hungry program.

At Christmas we had books for the children through a public library program funded by civic groups and individuals. Various organizations and individuals provide children’s hats and mittens for Christmas as well.

Your ongoing support makes all this possible. I am sure Fred Wadsworth is smiling down upon all of you. God bless all of you!

Editor:

When I think about Catholic Schools Week, I think about what Catholic schools mean to me. I have been part of Catholic schools since preschool.

Beginning in a Catholic school in northwest Illinois, I learned the basic principles of being a good Catholic student: honor God, be kind, respect others, and respect my parents. After moving to Marinette for seventh grade, I was unsure how my new classmates would accept me. By the end of the first day, all the students were treating me like I had been there forever, joking with me and including me in their conversations.

Now that I am a senior, I am more aware of the world around me. I have learned to accept other people’s views. I owe a great deal to my Catholic schooling. We have been taught to listen to and accept others’ viewpoints and remain faithful to our faith. This philosophy makes it possible for people of other faiths to send their children to a Catholic school.

In my four years at St. Thomas Aquinas Academy (STAA), I have gone to school with students of at least eight different religious beliefs. This diversity helps us understand others and enables us to be acceptant, whether in college or at work.

This past fall, our school cross country team adopted a slogan: Go Fast. “Go” stands for God, “Fa” stands for family, “s” stands for school and finally, “t” stands for team. This is the order of our priorities.

Only at a Catholic school would you be able to openly talk about God and be able to share Him with others. Reflecting on my Catholic education, both in Illinois and Wisconsin, there is one thing that is consistent: you are not only a part of a school, you are a part of a family.

Matt Wubben,

STAA Senior

To the Editor:

I read the article in the Jan. 18 Peshtigo Times and I have to make a correction. I am the woman who started and organizes the Athelstane Holiday Light Contest. I have done this for 7 years now. It was written in the article that the POLITICAL ENVIRONMENT even infected the contest. Infected is a pretty strong word. The politics of Athelstane have NOTHING to do with the contest.

I was at the meeting to let the town board and the residents know how I ran and kept track of the contest. I have listened to (as I call them) third party comments and suggestions every year for the last 7 years. I have changed the way of doing the contest and tried different things for 7 years. The whole reason I brought the subject up was so hopefully next year I hear no comments and suggestions.

I have come to the conclusion that the contest is run as fair it can be. That is also why I told the town if someone feels that they can do a better job I will turn the contest over to them. I do not plan on making any more changes to the way the contest is done.

Again, politics have nothing to do with this contest. I just wanted to make that clear. Thank you for listening and correcting the issue.

Sincerely,

Harriet Ivanis
