To the Editor:

We at NEWCAP would like to thank the students of Marinette High School for their continued support.

A special thank you to Brenda Blystone, Karen Sporrer and the rest of the district’s staff. They have stepped up to lend a helping hand several times each year.

During their Winter Fest celebration they put on a food drive for our food pantry. The hard work they put into this activity resulted in over 6,500 food items! That is a tremendous help for our pantry and our clients.

When so much of the news is focused on problems in our schools, we need to let everyone know of the positive activities that are going on.

The need in our area has increased over the last few years and continues to rise. NEWCAP serves over 850 individuals, approximately 340 households, with food each month.

Dear Editor:

Marinette has just been featured in another episode (rapidly becoming a saga) of Gov. Scott Walker’s disingenuous hypocrisy. Gov. Walker came to Marinette on Monday for a ribbon cutting ceremony celebrating training programs that are a result of collaboration between Northeast Wisconsin Technical College and Marinette Marine Corporation.

Gov. Walker certainly revealed his unabashed deceitfulness. First, he had the gall to put on a happy face after blithely cutting over $70 million from the technical colleges,the institutions that prepare people for the workforce. How did that cut help the Marinette Marine Training program?

Secondly, Gov. Walker has been constantly bashing unions and touting private sector jobs. Guess what? Marinette Marine workers are mostly UNION workers who will by and large be working on government contract ships. Walker would have us believe that union workers are worthless and that the government doesn’t create jobs. What’s missing from this picture?

Third, Walker is having trouble creating the 250,000 private sector jobs he promised�just look at Wisconsin’s abysmal record of job losses since his budget took effect. While not overtly taking credit, is he trying to create the impression that his administration was somehow involved in the Marinette Marine jobs? We are all ecstatic over the potential jobs in northeastern Wisconsin, and we all know Scott Walker had ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to do with them. The contract was awarded long before Walker took office and was the result of the hard work by Marinette Marine, Gov. Jim Doyle, Senators Herb Kohl and Russ Feingold, U.S. Representatives Bart Stupak and Steve Kagen, and State Senator Dave Hansen.

And finally, once again revealing his sleazy modus operandi, Walker avoided the protesters, sneaking in and out of town like a weasel. Senator Kohl and State Senator Hansen left by the front door and graciously chatted with the crowd. Even John Nygren politely walked across the lawn (although he later whined about citizens peacefully exercising their constitutional rights and tried to blame them for Walker’s divisive agenda and failing policies).

Next episode�Scott Walker uses the federal money designed to help struggling homeowners for what? To balance HIS unbalanced budget that his advertisements have been claiming was balanced.

Calling all World War Veterans,

By now, most everyone in the region has heard about Old Glory Honor Flight, Inc. and its mission: to ensure that every single World War II veteran gets the opportunity to see the recently completed WWII Memorial in Washington, DC.

To date, we have flown 11 missions to Washington, DC and transported nearly one thousand WWII veterans to see their memorial. And while we have experienced almost unprecedented success, we know that there are still many WWII vets that have never signed up with us.

So we are asking the community for help. If you are a veteran of World War II, or if you know one that has not visited the WWII Memorial in Washington, D.C. CALL US. We will send out an application to the veteran. There is no cost to the veteran. The trip to Washington, DC is completely free. It is our way of saying thank you.

There may be reasons some veterans have not signed up. Some may say: “the waitlist is too long.” While it is true that in the past our waitlist was very lengthy, that is no longer the case. The generosity of the community and the hard work of the Old Glory Honor Flight team has taken care of that. If a WWII veteran were to submit an application today, he may very well be flying this Fall.

Other vets may say: “but I did not do anything heroic.” To that we reply that the veteran did not have the ability to dictate where the military would send them and what duties they would be assigned. The fact is that they answered the call of duty and stood ready willing and able to do whatever was asked of them. For that they have earned our undying respect, admiration, and gratitude.

Let us work together to ensure that every WWII veteran in Northeastern Wisconsin has the opportunity to visit the World War II Memorial in Washington

Editor’s Note: LiDonne, a former Marimette resident, is married to the former Tammy Hipke of Peshtigo. He is the founder of Old Glory Honor Flight and does it as a tribute to his father, who died before the WWII Memorial was completed.

I am disappointed with the behavior of those vehemently opposed to anything associated with Governor Walker. I will call them recall fanatics. In my opinion they are reacting emotionally, rather than rationally. They should avoid being manipulated by the propaganda being generated by interest outside of Wisconsin and consider the facts. After considering the facts, if they find the need to protest, they should do so in an appropriate manner. It has been stated that the Governor “dodges citizens” at a recent appearance in Marinette. I say that he wisely avoided confrontation with recall fanatics. He cannot afford to step into a gathering of irrational/ ill-mannered protesters. He would be verbally abused and risk physical injury by a protester looking to a “Hero for the cause.” If people don’t believe that these recall fanatics will do anything; read the February 14, 2012 Editorial by William Barth at Beloitdailynews.com.

I ask that the recall fanatics consider the facts:

1. A $3.6 Billion budget deficit was eliminated. This was done without increasing taxes or initiating massive public employee layoffs. Contrast this to Illinois predicament. Illinois proposes closing prisons, mental health centers, and eliminating basic social services. Taxes were increased. $700 million in revenue will be generated. However, state worker pension costs alone will rise by more than $1 billion.

2. Over $800 million in unpaid bills, including $235 million to the Patients Compensation Fund and $58 million owed to the state of Minnesota have been paid.

3. A Waste, Fraud and Abuse Commission identified millions in potential savings. Departments like Health Services and Corrections are implementing Commission findings to save money.

4. Governor Walker signed legislation into law improving Wisconsin’s litigation climate, improving the state’s regulatory process and creating a tax credit for employers that create jobs. This is in an effort to help the private sector create 250,000 new jobs by 2015.

Governor Walker and the Republican legislators had to make decisions that were unpopular to public employees. Public employees must realize that they are just experiencing concessions similar to those private sector workers have been experiencing for years. This has been construed as “Bashing” unions. It is just a dose of reality for public employees. The sacrifices of the public employees are much appreciated by their employers (the taxpayer).

Paying off bills, operating under a balanced budget, and working on bipartisan initiatives is good for the future of Wisconsin.
