Letter to Editor:

NWTC-Marinette hosted “Career Day” on Wednesday, April 4. Our fourth grade students and staff in the Marinette Elementary Schools express our gratitude to NWTC-Marinette for sponsoring such a successful event. “Career Day” was a wonderful opportunity for students to explore and gain an awareness of some of the possible career choices available to them.

Students attended sectionals on the following career options: Computers, Accounting, Nursing, Fire Protection, Autos, Welding, Machine Tooling, Time Management, ITV and Administrative Assistant. Students learned about each career by participating in hands-on activities. The activities were such a fun and positive way for the students to learn.

Thanks to Pat O’Hara and Ann Bradford for offering a fun-filled event. Special thanks also to Bob Limberg, Janet Dausey, Kim Oninski, Chad Counard, John Bergold, Dale Lange, Tony Dziekonski, Ron Martin and Cindy Goldsmith for leading the sectionals. Thank you again to NWTC-Marinette for supporting and inspiring our elementary students’ career education.

Letter to the Editor:

Originally, Easter began as an observance of the death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. By the fourth century, Good Friday became the observance of the crucifixion, and Easter was left to emphasize the resurrection. The resurrection of Jesus Christ is central to Christian worship and validates His whole life and ministry. Easter is the model for every Sunday. Worship on the Lord’s Day is always a celebration of the resurrection as the victory of Jesus Christ over death and the deliverance of God’s people from sin’s dominion.

In honor and loving memory of all the family and friends who have died over the years and those who I have officiated at their funeral, I present the following Scripture references that speak of the resurrection:

1 Peter 1:3-9 states, “Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! By His great mercy we have been born anew to a living hope through the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, and to an inheritance which is imperishable, undefiled and unfading, kept in heaven for you. In this rejoice, though now for a little while you suffer trials so that the genuineness of your faith may prove itself worthy at the revelation of Jesus Christ. Without having seen Him, yet you love Him; though you do not see Him, you believe in Him and rejoice with unutterable and exalted joy. As the harvest of your faith you reap the salvation of your souls.”

Romans 6:1-11 states, “What shall we say, then? Shall we go on sinning so that grace may increase? By no means! We died to sin, how can we live it any longer? Or don’t you know that all of us who were baptized into Jesus Christ were baptized into His death? We were therefore buried with Him through baptism in death in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead through the glory of the Father, we too may live a new life. If we have been united with Him like this in His death, we will certainly also be united with Him in His resurrection. For we know that our old self was crucified with Him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin, because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with Him. For we know that since Christ was raised from dead, He cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over Him. The death He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life He lives, He lives to God. In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Jesus Christ.”

Our time on earth is short compared to our eternal life with Jesus, our family and friends. May the Good News of Easter transform you and bless you!

By the time this letter is published, results of the election for school board members of the School District of Wausaukee are known. In last week’s edition (March 28) two ads appeared: one supported a write-in candidate and the other supported two of three candidates who timely filed candidacy papers as well as the write-in candidate. Both ads were authorized and paid for by Lynn and David Martin of Athelstane. I feel it is important for School District of Wausaukee residents to know the ad containing my name was placed without prior notification to me and without my permission. My hope is the electorates’ voting decisions were not impacted by the unauthorized use of my name in this ad.

When Social Security had so much money, you couldn’t spend it all. The government decided to give government employees the best medical insurance, plus a pension plan.

Interest rates were the highest ever and surely would not go down. When they disappeared, those programs could not be taken away.

If I write a check with no funds to cover it the bank will not pay. The government should work the same way.

When you borrow money from other countries it must be paid back with interest. What about our debt? Is this what you call FAIR?

Governor Scott Walker is doing what needs to be done for Wisconsin. It will help our government when all states work together.

This is not hearsay. I lived through it.

Editor:

The American public needs to understand several key points when discussing rising gas prices. One is that petroleum is a finite and non-renewable resource. And second, gas prices are not determined by political parties. What we can do in the US has been mentioned by President Obama but seems to fall on deaf ears. Reduce our demand for the resource by encouraging more efficient means of transportation such as passenger rail travel where possible. Amtrak extension from Milwaukee to Green Bay would reduce oil demand in northeastern Wisconsin. And increase our generation of energy from renewable and sustainable energy sources. These changes in behavior and thinking require political figures that understand science and the power it provides to solve difficult problems. Let’s hope we can find them and vote for them.

To the Editor:

It took almost three years and a new Town Board but the access issues concerning Pickerel Lake have finally been resolved. Starting back in June of 2009, shortly before the then newly elected Town Chairman David Rakowski took office and continuing up until the time he was voted out of office, launched a series of coercive attacks and other illegal means to steal my property at Pickerel Lake. Rakowski saw to it that I was harassed by threat of police action. Rakowski then brought civil action against me. Rakowski even went so far as to trespass on my property and illegally take some of my personal property, which the Oconto County Sheriff’s Department ordered Rakowski to return or face prosecution.

I was never more glad to see the electors make the right decision and elect a whole new Town Board in April of 2011. The new Board, within two months of taking office, voted to dismiss Rakowski’s frivolous lawsuit against me, which has saved the taxpayers thousands of dollars in additional legal expenses and court costs.

The new Board then took proper action and dredged a channel at the public boat landing at the end of Pickerel Access Road. The channel that needed to be dredged was 8’ wide by 75’ long with an average depth of 18”. At the March 20, 2012 Town Board meeting, the Board determined that approximately 35 cubic yards of material needed to be removed, at a cost of $10.50 per cubic yard, or a total cost of $367.50.

Looking back, Rakowski cost the taxpayers of Brazeau close to $15,000 or more in legal fees, court costs and other associated expenses, all because Rakowski’s stubborn and vindictive nature refused to take a common sense approach to resolve a very simple and very inexpensive problem.

I just want to say thanks to the new Board, especially to Supervisor Enix and Supervisor Hanna, for taking a firm stand against corruption and for standing up for the taxpayers.

Re: Judicial Misconduct

Last week a revelation came to light that was so shocking in its implications that every Wisconsin citizen, regardless of party affiliation, should be deeply concerned. No less than 29 Dane County judges were found to have signed petitions calling for the recall of Governor Walker. The fact that serving judges would indulge in partisan politics is a disgrace that threatens each and every one of us. America is a nation of laws, and if we lose confidence in the fairness of our court system, the result will be chaos followed inevitably by tyranny.

The preamble to Wisconsin’s Code of Judicial Conduct is unequivocal in its commitment to judicial integrity: “Intrinsic to all provisions of this code are the precepts that judges, individually and collectively, must respect and honor the judicial office as a public trust and strive to enhance and maintain confidence in our legal system.” Fairness and impartiality are themes that resonate throughout the Code, but are specifically underscored in SCR 60.03: “A judge shall avoid impropriety and the appearance of impropriety in all of the judge’s activities. (1) A judge shall respect and comply with the law and shall act at all times in a manner that promotes public confidence in the integrity and impartiality of the judiciary.” And, with regard to political activities specifically, section SCR60.06 states: “Wisconsin adheres to the concept of a nonpartisan judiciary. A candidate for judicial office shall not appeal to partisanship and shall avoid partisan activity in the spirit of a nonpartisan judiciary.”

There are only three possibilities that can explain the shameful actions of the Dane County judges: One, they never read the Wisconsin Code in the first place; two, they simply chose to disregard it; or, three, they didn’t think they would ever be caught.

Last year the childish behavior of our Supreme Court was made public, to the chagrin of all of us who believe in the rule of law. The petition scandal is now only the latest affront to the integrity of our courts and suggests a disturbing trend, which must be stopped.

We snicker at neighboring states, especially Illinois, which is so riddled with corruption that its last two governors are serving time in federal prison. Well, it’s time we stop laughing and look in the mirror.

To the Editor:

Re: Restoring Civility

I recently received a call from someone representing Wisconsin Education Association Council asking me to support the candidate that is opposing Governor Walker. WEAC claims that this will “restore civility” in our state. The person did not receive a positive response from me.

I am a retired teacher with many happy years of teaching children in Wisconsin, and seldom have I endorsed the candidates chosen by WEAC. I have always been conservative, pro-life, for balanced budgets, and against the giveaways that are used to garner votes for a particular political party. I have also been respectful of colleagues who did not share my conservative point of view.

However, I am appalled at the the things that have been done in the name of “restoring civility” to the state of Wisconsin. I am very much against demonstrators who broke windows to get into our state capitol, teachers who asked doctors to sign slips saying they were sick so that they could demonstrate in Madison, disruptive tactics in public meetings of conservative candidates, people who showed up at Governor Walker’s home at all hours of the night to scare and disrupt his family, and people who went out in boats to harass the Governor while he was fishing— to name a few.

On a personal note, last summer I had signs held up by thick wires on either side of my driveway which is on US Highway 141 north of Amberg. These signs supported a candidate that was running against State Senator Holperin who fled to Illinois to avoid his responsibilities. A county employee, using taxpayer purchased mowing equipment, chose to use this equipment to to turn my signs into a shredded mass of paper and twisted wire. Others also had their signs destroyed in this manner.

I do hope and pray that civility does return to Wisconsin... the kind of civility that respects other people’s point of view and the will of the voters more than getting one’s own way on an issue.

To the Editor:

Nine million dollars! That is the projected cost of the recall election against Gov. Scott Walker. All because a group of selfish, arrogant people feel they were wronged during a successful effort to balance our state budget and reduce the deficit. The real losers in this fiasco are the hundreds of thousands of Wisconsin residents who voted for Walker and are now being told their votes were worthless. Walker was elected by a majority vote in a fair election and should be allowed to serve out his term.

If I sound ticked off, it’s because I am. I’m angry a group of whiney, crybaby union employees think they are so much better than me that my vote - which I hold dear - only counts if it agrees with their agenda.

I’m angry they feel they are above the system - a system in which people unhappy with elected officials vote them out of office in the next scheduled election. That is the embodiment of due process and comes at no additional cost to the taxpayer. I’m angry our state constitution contains a loophole that allows the abrogation of power we are seeing now.

I’m angry this group of people will try to replace Walker, not with someone of the people, by the people, and for the people, but with a pawn owned and controlled by the union. And I’m angry taxpayer money will be wasted on this election.

If this election actually takes place, I hope there are enough rational people in Wisconsin to put Walker right back in the governor’s chair, and when this happens I hope Walker can find a way to dig a little deeper into the pockets of those who perpetrated this farce to gain back some of the money that was wasted through their greed and arrogance.

Dear Editor:

Taxpayers of Wisconsin need to take notice on the Scott Walker recall. He said he was going to fix the State of Wisconsin, and as far as I am concerned, he is on the right track. The people of Wisconsin cannot afford to pay the 800 million dollars that Scott Walker has saved us so far. Given the chance Scott Walker could save Wisconsin tax payers millions of dollars more. So if you signed the Recall Walker Petition it is not too late, all you have to do is vote for Walker during the recall election.
