Coleman Notches Pair Of Wins

Tops Kewaunee And Bonduel For 2-1 Start

After a season opening loss to Freedom Thursday, the Coleman Cougars their tough non-conference slate and bounced back with a pair of big wins. Coach Kent Casper’s diamond gang blasted Kewaunee of the Packerland Conference Saturday 12-2 before holding off Bonduel Tuesday 6-5.

Now 2-1 on the young season, the Cougars will return to the baseball diamond Thursday entertaining Crandon at 4:30pm then host Marion on Monday, April 9.

Elsewhere around the area fields, Wausaukee improved to 2-0 with a 13-1 whipping of visiting Goodman-Pembine, Crivitz claimed one of 3 outings while Lena-STAA swept a doubleheader from White Lake Tuesday 16-6 and 9-3.

Coleman Clipped By

Freedom In Opener

The Cougars came up a run short in their season opener Thursday falling to host Freedom 4-3. Fielding issues (5 errors) along with managing just 6 hits off a pair of Freedom hurlers put Coleman on the losing end.

“We stunk it up with 4-5 errors and didn’t pitch as well as we should have. On the other hand, Freedom is a good team and in Division 2 with everybody back from last year. They are in the same conference with Xavier, Clintonville and Waupaca,” Coleman coach Kent Casper said. “We had our chances but couldn’t capitalize.”

In the second inning starting pitcher Mason Mergener and Lucas Markiewicz scored to tie things up at 2-2.

Freedom took a 3-2 lead into the 7th inning before the Cougars rallied to get even at 3-all. Mitch Champagne cracked a single, stole second and raced home on a two-out single off the bat of losing pitcher Mike Mergener.

The deadlock lasted a half inning as Zach Fox singled to open the 7th and later scored on a bases loaded single by Neal Schlewesky.

Mason Mergener worked 5 innings giving up 3 runs (2 earned) on 3 hits with 6 walks and 3 strikeouts. Brother Mike walked two and gave up two hits during his 2 innings of work.

Bats Come Alive As

Coleman Rolls 12-2;

Pitchers Dominate

Four Coleman hurlers combined to toss a nifty one hitter in a 12-2 road win over Kewaunee Saturday afternoon.

Hard throwing Derek Marquardt worked three innings to get the win and was followed to the mound by southpaw Trevor Bushmaker, Trevor Seewald and Lucas Markiewicz.

Marquardt gave up the only hit, a second inning single to Jarrod Pribek, while the quartet fanned 8 and walked 4.

“Our pitching was outstanding...did a nice job of throwing strikes and getting ahead of the batters. Marquardt threw hard while Bushmaker looked sharp with 5 strikeouts in two innings. Bushmaker threw a little harder then last year, kept the ball low in the zone and his ball moves. Plus we were able to take advantage of some errors and had some timely hits,” Casper said.

Leading the 13-hit Coleman attack were Bushmaker with two doubles, a single and 4 RBI’s while Champagne, along with Mike and Mason Mergener collected two hits each. One of Mason’s blows was a two-bagger and he also scored 4 runs.

Coleman grabbed a 2-0 first inning lead when Mike Mergener singled, Mason walked, Marquardt singled in Mike before Markiewicz and Bushmaker drew walks.

In the third inning, Mason Mergener blasted a leadoff double and scored on a single by Bushmaker.

Five Cougars headed home in the fourth inning on 4 hits...singles by Markiewicz, Jackson Margis and Champagne while Bushmaker roped a double.

Coleman used 3 hits to up the lead to 11-2 in the fifth as Champagne and the Mergener brothers cracked consecutive singles. Bushmaker sent the final Coleman run home in the 7th with a booming double to centerfield, scoring Marquardt (beaned).

While Martin was sailing along, the Wolverines combined 6 hits with 10 walks to claim the lopsided win.

Peshtigo Struggles

Against Shawano

Traveling to Shawano for a Saturday twinbill, the Bulldogs came out on the short end of a 15-5 and 8-5 loss to the Hawks.

Game one proved to be very frustrating for the Bulldogs as they took a 5-4 lead into the bottom of the sixth inning only to give up 11 runs and lose by 10.

“We had a complete meltdown in the first game,” Peshtigo coach Pat Robbins said. “Overall on the day we did do some good things.”

In game one, the Bulldogs grabbed a 1-0 second inning lead when Tom Quigley slapped the first of his two hits, moved to second on a bunt by Matt Borkovec before scoring on a fielder’s choice off the bat of Derek Maye.

Shawano scored twice in its half of the second frame before Peshtigo got even at 2-2 in the fourth. Maye walked with one out, raced to third on a single by Jordan Berth before crossing the plate on a single by Joey Sparks.

Shawano regained the upper hand in the bottom of the fourth (4-2) on a RBI single by Brandon Laabe and an error before Peshtigo rallied for 3 runs in the fifth. Dakota Keller walked then circled the sacks as Cody Nielson, Derek Koronkiewicz (RBI) and Quigley lashed singles. Borkovec sent a run home by drawing a free pass with the bases loaded before Berth drove in the go-ahead tally with a ground out.

With plenty momentum on their side, the Bulldogs headed into the sixth inning protecting that 5-4 lead. It wouldn’t last long as Shawano sent 16 batters to the plate, scoring 11 runs on just 3 hits to win via the 10-run rule.

The rally featured 5 walks, singles by Hunter Hoffman and Kenny Casper along with a double by Lukas Postl. Toss in 5 Peshtigo errors and by the time the inning concluded, 11 runs crossed the plate and Shawano earned a 15-5 win.

Borkovec started for Peshtigo (3 2/3 innings) allowing 4 runs on 4 hits with 6 walks and no strikeouts. Zack Neumann was tagged with the loss giving up 11 runs one hit before Trevor Bero recorded the final out.

In game two, Peshtigo punched out 7 hits but saw 5 errors lead to 6 runs in an 8-5 setback. Berth earned the starting nod and threw 80 pitches in 3 2/3 innings before being relieved by Joey Sparks for the final 2 1/3 frames.

Berth aided his own cause by punching out 2 of Peshtigo’s 7 hits, while Sparks, Quigley, Maye, Borkovec and Derek Koronkiewicz added singles.

Trailing 6-0 after three innings, Peshtigo saw Gunner Kinney get aboard on an error and race home on a double by Berth. In the fifth inning Koronkiewicz and Sparks lashed singles before Bero added a sac fly.

Down 8-2 heading into the 7th frame, the Bulldogs registered a trio of runs on two hits. Sparks opened the inning with his third walk of the game. A ground out, balk and error on Quigley’s shot to second scored Sparks. Maye and Borkovec capped the inning with RBI singles.

Crivitz Drops Pair

To Northland Pines

Managing just 6 hits on the day, Crivitz lost a doubleheader to visiting Northland Pines Saturday 9-3 and 10-3.

In the opener, the Wolverines fell behind 4-0 heading into the bottom of the third when Dan Tomaszewski walked and scooted home on a single by Cody Wolf and sac fly off the bat of losing pitcher AJ Garcia.

The deficit grew to 6-1 in the fifth before two more Crivitz runners crossed the plate. With one out, Parker DeLosSantos was hit by a pitch while Garcia and Tyler Wieting singled. Jake Sawinski drew a bases loaded walk to score one run and Spencer Schwartz added a sac fly.

The southpaw Garcia threw 127 pitches in his 7 inning mound stint, giving up 9 runs (6 earned) on 8 hits with 3 walks and 5 strikeouts.

Dom Caroselli keyed the winners with a triple, two singles, 2 RBIs and 2 runs scored.

Caroselli played a key role in the second game allowing 4 hits and 3 runs for the five inning victory 10-3. Crivitz came up with hits off the bats of Wolf, Garcia, Wieting and Colton Lange.

The visiting team in game two, the Wolverines did manage to take a 3-0 first inning lead as DeLosSantos got aboard on an error and scored on a single by Garcia. It took Crivitz just one more batter to send two runs home as Wieting launched a two-run homer.

Northland Pines scored twice in the second inning then added 8 runs on 4 hits in the fourth to win going away.

Chucking 74 pitches, Wolf took the loss yielding 10 runs (9 earned) on 6 hits with 4 walks and no strikeouts

Coleman Turns

Back Bonduel

Making the most of 9 hits, the Cougars held off a late Bonduel rally to claim a 6-5 win. Coleman jumped out to a 5-0 lead after three frames befoe the visiting Bears made things interesting by scoring twice in the fourth inning and 3 more times in the seventh.

Champagne paced the Cougars with 3 hits while Markiewicz drove in three runs, including the eventual game winner with a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning.

Engels opened the game with a walk and scored on a ground out by Mason Mergener for a 1-0 first inning lead. In the second frame, Marq1uardt singled, stole second and raced all the way home on a ground out by Trevor Seewald.

Four hits enabled the Cougars to pry open a 5-0 lead in the third inning as Champagne, Mike and Mason Mergener singled before Markiewicz lashed a two-run single.

After Bonduel closed the gap to 5-2, Bushmaker ripped a leadoff triple in the sixth and headed home on the sac fly off the bat of Markiewicz.

Coleman did have some anxious moments in the 7th as 3 hits, a walk and an error keyed a 3 run rally. Reliever Bushmaker did manage to use a strikeout, toss a runner out at home before getting a comebacker to the mound to end the game.

-Wausaukee Whips

Combining 5 hits with 12 walks, Wausaukee had no trouble taking care of visiting Goodman-Pembine Tuesday 13-1. The lopsided win saw the Rangers roll to a 5-0 lead after two innings then tack on 5 runs in the third and 2 in the fourth to win going away.

-Goodman-Pembine

The top two hitters in the Wausaukee lineup, Brett Edlbeck and Beau DeLaet, colllected just one hit but turned 5 walks into 8 runs scored. Number three batter Cole Lewandowski added a single, two runs scored and 2 RBI.

Wausaukee claimed a 3-0 first inning lead without the benefit of a hit. Edlbeck, DeLaet and Lewandowski all walked and scored following a number of passed balls, wild pitches and an error.

In the second inning Lewandowski cracked a two-run single while run scoring hits off the bats of Dillon Meyers, Edlbeck (double) and Eddy Self (2 RBI) pushed the lead to 10-0.

Goodman-Pembine finally got on the board in the fourth when losing pitcher Austin Lorenz singled, stole second and scored on a single by Bob Hawley.

The Rangers capped the big offensive explosion with 3 runs on no hits in the fourth. Pinch hitter Aaron Schlies and Edlbeck walked, DeLaet reached on an error before 3 more walks sent the runners home.
