Slumps Continues For Marines, Now 0-4 In Bay

The offensive woes continue for the Marinette Marines after dropping two more Bay Conference clashes to sit at 3-6 overall and 0-4 in league play.

The Marines managed just 6 hits and 30 strikeouts in losses to Oconto Falls 1-0 Thursday and Hortonville 5-1 Tuesday.

The setback at Oconto Falls saw Mike Nompleggi toss a nifty one-hitter with 15 whiffs while a pair of Hortonville hurlers tallied 15 strikeouts and allowed by 5 hits.

The only good news for Marinette came in a 5-4 non-league win over Oconto Friday afternoon.

Marines Handcuffed By Nompleggi, Oconto Falls

With Oconto Falls righthander Mike Nompleggi collecting 15 strikeouts and allowing just one hit, the offensive struggles continued for the Marines in a 1-0 Bay Conference loss Thursday.

The hard throwing Nompleggi dominated from start to finish, striking out the side in the first and 7th innings to collect the win. He made the Oconto Falls defense look flawless, singlehandedly taking care of the 21 outs via strikes (15).

“Nompleggi was tough and threw really hard with a sharp curveball. We didn’t have a chance against him...probably the best pitcher in the conference,” Marinette coach Dave Francour said. ”He is going to pitch at Whitewater next year.”

Marinette had only three runners in the game...losing pitcher Austin Belonga drew a leadoff walk in the second inning, Scott Eldredge got aboard on an error in the third while Jake McMahon slapped a two-out single in the fifth.

The lone run of the game was scored in the third inning. With two outs, John Thompson, Ethan Berth and Jake Mogged (RBI) singled for the 1-0 victory.

“We didn’t even look good swinging at the plate. I have never seen a whole team go into a slump like this. We even changed our lineup around looking for a lift. It didn’t happen and right now it is a mental thing,” Francour added.

For the second straight week, Belonga was the tough luck losing pitcher, giving up one run on 7 hits with 5 strikeouts and two walks.

“Austin pitched good enough to win.. out of their 7 hits, 3 came in the third inning and two each in the fifth and sixth,” Francour concluded.

Marines Slip Past

Oconto 5-4 To End

Three-Game Skid

With their offense still struggling, the Marines made the most of 4 hits to slip past visiting Oconto Friday 5-4.

Marinette scored 3 runs in the first inning then added two more in the fourth frame.

Leadoff hitter Aaron Pettit reached on an error while Derek Klegin and Joey Brosig followed with walks. Belonga slapped a run scoring single, Luke Kelly drew a bases loaded walk before Charlie Klumb sent the final run home with a ground out.

The Blue Devils got even in their half of the second inning on three walks, an error and two-run single off the bat of Tanner Pillsbury.

Despite not getting any hits, the Marines answered with 2 runs in the fourth frame. McMahon and Scott Eldredge drew walks to start the frame and moved up a base on a steal. Pettit and Klegin sent runs home with grounders.

A leadoff walk to Rick Mataitis followed by a balk and RBI single from Forest Grygiel enabled Oconto to close the deficit to 5-4 in the sixth.

In the seventh inning, the fourth Marinette hurler of the game, McMahon beaned Blake Campshure, who advanced to second on a bunt. McMahon escaped further trouble getting cleanup swinger Jacob Westphal to ground out to first base while whiffing Matt Shallow to end the game.

Kyle Johnson (2 innings) started for the Marines followed by Klumb, Max Hipke and McMahon. The quartet walked 7, struck out 8 while giving up 4 hits.
