National Nursing Home Week�, which begins on Mother’s Day, May 13 and ends May 19, is a special week to “Celebrate the Journey” of residents and honor them with a shower of community support. This year’s theme of “Celebrating the Journey” is a perfect backdrop for a visit to loved ones, friends and neighbors as they continue to write new chapters in the journals of their journey. Many skilled nursing care facilities in our area will be hosting special events. If you are unable to visit, please make a phone call, send a greeting card, flowers or even an email. This special attention will make someone’s day!

Dear Editor:

Recently Kim Marsolek and two other teachers have been the topic of some pretty heated discussions regarding the direction of Special Education Staff. These three teachers are presently employed by the Wausaukee School District but the District is proposing to subcontract the service through CESA.

Comments have been made, opinions are being shared, and a lot of half-truths are being tossed around.

The Board keeps telling people “these teachers have nothing to worry about � they will all have jobs in Wausaukee next year.” On Thursday April 5, all three teachers were given a preliminary notice of non-renewal that does not state they will have a job with CESA but rather that the Wausaukee School District will ask that CESA hire them. That is a far cry from a guarantee in my eyes! It has also been said many times that “things will not change.” The only truth in that is, IF HIRED their salary will remain the same � their benefits � the things they earned in previous service to the District � will NOT! They will lose their sick days, their health and dental insurance will be different, and the District will have to pay an extra $1,500 for the three of them to make the switch. So to say there will be no change is not accurate. They will get less overall and the District will pay more overall.

The teachers affected by this decision were made aware of the possibility only 24 hours or so prior to the action and were told repeatedly it was going to be a “discussion item” only. It is clear that this topic as a whole has not been looked into thoroughly enough to warrant spending extra taxpayer money. In fact, there are other school districts doing the reverse of what Wausaukee is proposing � Gillett School District is a prime example of a District who is taking CESA positions and making them District positions.

Another reason given as to why this is being considered is that the district wants all Special Ed. positions under the CESA umbrella. This response also appears to be a half-truth because there are two other Special Ed. positions not being changed from District to CESA positions. Another reason being cited is evaluation � the district seems to feel that CESA is better qualified to evaluate Special Ed. personnel. The current Elementary Principal is a certified Special Ed. teacher - why is he not capable of performing this duty? And, it is unclear whether or not the pay for administration will change if this duty is handed off to CESA. These are questions that the taxpayers have a right to have answers to, yet the School Board doesn’t agree.

The fact that this decision was made in such haste without any input from even the Board members is very disappointing. The lack of respect shown to the parents of the students involved has been appalling and the blatant disregard for input from the teachers is insulting. It is disheartening that all those years of service means so little to the Board and Administration. At the very least all taxpayers in the Wausaukee School District should look into not only this situation but others as well. It is time to restore common sense to the School Board and stop the private agendas at taxpayer expense.

Letter to the Editor:

Your front page stories the past few weeks about the Wausaukee School Board helps to point out what is wrong with our government leaders . . . . . they don’t listen to the tax payers even on a local level! In this case they are holding “public meetings” but hiding behind their interpretation of “Wisconsin Open Meetings Law.” A tactic often taken by several area school boards for some strange reason. Funny thing is the school boards never provide proof that any such law exists. In Crivitz they still don’t listen to the voters in spite of the voters recalling one school board member and having another school board member kicked out of office for violating state law.

The school administrators are well paid with great benefits paid for by taxpayer (voters) hard earned dollars but the administrators still don’t seem to want to listen to the people’s concerns about their children’s education. They all are forgetting who they work for perhaps? Maybe we need some more changes to laws besides those already in place?

I know that one way to change school boards is at the annual meeting. But don’t expect the school board and administration to cooperate with changes to their taxpayer supported kingdom. Taxpayers can read the rules governing school board annual meetings and gather the voters to make changes although recalls in the state of Wisconsin seem to be the preferred method lately.

Re: Crivitz Airport

3D1, the Crivitz Airport, the “ ONLY” public access airport in Marinette County, is under attack!! No, it isn’t little green men from another planet or a foreign government. The enemy here is INDIFFERENCE!! The airport is owned by the Town of Stephenson and for the past decade, they have taken a stance to “maintain it but don’t improve it”. The one thing I have learned in seventy five years on this earth, is that you cannot stand still. If you are not moving forward, then you are backing up.

For the past eight to 10 years, there has been a group of volunteer citizens that have tried their best to keep up our airport. “Friends of the Crivitz Airport” (FOCA) Thru fund raising and volunteer workers, they have kept the grass cut, held “Young Eagles” events in conjunction with the EEA chapter in Menominee and awarded scholarships to the young people of the area. They have attempted to obtain some of the hundreds of thousands of dollars in federal grants to improve the airport. These funds are generated out of taxes on aviation fuel, etc.; not out of general funds or income taxes. The town board always declined to take advantage of these funds. These indifferences has causes so much frustration that FOCA has gone into hibernation!! Until something positive occurs, there will be no more “volunteer” grass cutting done. If you live in the Crivitz area or have driven on Cty W west of Crivitz, you may have noted how nice the airport looks, without all the tall weeds and brush. It would be a shame to let it go back to its former rundown appearance.

To this point, the majority of voices heard at town meetings have been against or indifferent to any improvements. The town board had little choice but to follow this lead. What they need is to hear from people that realize the important role the airport takes So if you would, take a moment to consider the good points of having an airport in our community. Several times a year, people with life threatening conditions are transported by helicopter from our field. Most years, the DNR bases a firefighting plane and fire retardant chemicals to protect remote areas of our community, during fire season. These are just a few of the positive aspects of 3D1. So if you have ever looked to the heavens when you heard the sound of an aircraft engine, or still do like me; then PLEASE take the time to contact one of the Town of Stephenson board members and let them know that you too—-SUPPORT THE CRIVITZ AIRPORT.

Not all “education” is the same. Today secular humanism, relativism, postmodernism and situational ethics are found to dominate public education, and much of daily life. That does NOT make it true, but it does explain a lot of things.
