Coleman, Wausaukee Share M-O Lead

League Powers To Square Off Mon. At 4:30 p.m.

Coleman Roughs Up

Gillett 9-Zip In Rain

Jumping out to a 5-0 lead after two innings, the Cougars left little doubt to the final outcome in claiming a 9-0 road win over Gillett.

Coleman battered a pair of Gillett hurlers for 11 hits, including two each from Mitch and Mike Mergener, and Derek Marquardt. Mike Mergener drove in 3 runs while Mitch added a pair of RBIs.

Mason Mergener, the youngest of the three brothers, earned the mound win fanning 8 and allowing one hit over 5 innings.

“We hit the ball well, including a couple off the fence, while Mason did a nice job on the mound,” Casper said.

In the first inning, Mitch Champagne drew a one out walk and raced home with Mike and Mason Mergener. The Coleman cushion grew to 5-0 in the second inning as Mitch Mergener reached on an error, Mike ripped a RBI double and Marquardt added a single.

Three more Cougars found the plate in the fifth inning on four hits...singles by Champagne, Mike Mergener, Marquardt and Lucas Markiewicz.

Brad Mueller (2 innings) started for Gillett with relief help from Matt Noffke.

Tyler Hischke had the lone hit for Gillett, a single in the fourth frame.

Edlbeck, Wausaukee

Take Care Of Crivitz

Playing in steady rain, Wausaukee claimed a lopsided 11-2 win over visiting Crivitz Thursday. The game ended in the bottom of the fifth when the umpires called it.

Coach Bill Wickman’s diamond gang saw his troops punch out 11 hits to back up a nifty 4-hit pitching performance from senior righthander Brett Edlbeck.

Leading the Ranger hitmen were Beau DeLaet with a 3-3 effort and 4 RBIs while Edlbeck lashed a pair of singles and scored twice. The Rangers continue to get a big boost from the bottom of their order as number nine batter Dillon Meyers singled twice.

On the mound Edlbeck threw 85 pitches over 5 innings, walking 3 while setting down 8 Wolverines on strikes.

“Brett was in control for most of the game, threw strikes and got ahead of the hitters. Even with the poor field conditions toward the end, Brett was effective. Our hitting was good and we struck out twice, so we are putting the ball in play,” Wickman said. “Overall I was pleased, but we still need to work on cutting down our defensive mistakes.”

The four hits allowed by Edlbeck saw Parker DeLosSantos collect a single and double, while Cody Wolf and Jake Sawinski added one baggers.

DeLosSantos punched out a one-out single in the first then made his way around the sacks on a pair of errors and a RBI single by Sawinski.

The early deficit didn’t bother the Rangers, who jammed the plate for 8 runs in the bottom of the frame.

Edlbeck and DeLaet singled to get things rolling before Cole Lewandowski added a RBI double. Zach Struve and Aaron Schlies slammed run scoring doubles before Meyers upped the lead to 5-0 with a two-out single. The final three Ranger runs scooted home on a bases loaded double from DeLaet.

Crivitz countered with another solo run in the third as DeLosSantos doubled and scored on an error. That was it for the Wolverines as Edlbeck allowed one hit while fanning two over the final 2 innings.

Meanwhile the Rangers tacked on three more tallies in the third on 3 hits. Meyers and Edlbeck lashed back to back singles before an error scored one run. Edlbeck scored on a triple off the bat of DeLaet and Lewandowski added a sac fly to rightfield.

Coleman Blanks

Lena-STAA 10-0

A trio of Cougar hurlers combined to toss a nifty two-hitter in a 10-0 rout over visiting Lena-STAA.

Starter Mason Mergener fanned 3 batters in two perfect innings, first reliever Derek Marquardt added 4 strikeouts, two walks and a hit in two frames before Mitch Mergener tallied 3 strikeouts and gave up a hit over the final two innings.

At the plate, Coleman roughed up Titan pitcher Kiefer Powers for 12 hits, including 3 each by Mason Mergener and Jake Engels. Mergener added 3 runs scored and 2 RBI’s while Engels crossed the plate twice and drove in 3 runs.

Engels walked and Marquardt singled before scoring on a pair of sac flies for a 2-0 second inning lead.

In the third frame, Mason Mergener drilled a run scoring single while Marquardt sent two Cougars home with a single.

Mason Mergener singled and scored on a hit by Engels for a 6-0 spread in the fifth inning before Coleman ended the game with 4 more runs in the sixth. Three walks and singles by Champagne, Mason Mergener, Engels and Lucas Markiewicz capped the rally.

Losing pitcher Kiefer Powers lashed both of the hits for the Titans.

Rangers Rout

Peshtigo 13-3

Socking 13 hits off a pair of Peshtigo pitchers, the Wausaukee Rangers pocketed a lopsided 13-3 conference win Tuesday. The Rangers opened up an 8-0 lead after 4 innings before tacking on 5 more tallies over the final two frames.

Winning pitcher Brett Edlbeck, Austin Carter and Eddy Self punched out two hits each while Cole Lewandowski scored 4 runs.

Edlbeck scattered 7 hits over 7 innings with 10 strikeouts and no walks.

Zach Neumann started for Peshtigo allowing 8 runs (2 earned) on 6 hits over 4 innings. Matt Borkovec got the call for the final 3 innings yielding 5 runs on 4 hits.

The mound duo had little defensive support as the Bulldog glovemen committed 10 errors, resulting in 8 unearned runs.

Edlbeck singled and Lewandowski walked in the first inning before an error and ground out scored the runs.

The lead grew to 3-0 as Beau DeLaet singled and scored on Carter’s hit.

Five Rangers headed home in the fourth inning on just two hits for an 8-0 edge. Wausaukee took advantage of 4 fielding miscues to go along with a single from Dillon Meyers and RBI double off the bat of Edlbeck.

The Bulldogs trimmed the deficit to 8-3 in the fifth when Cody Nielson unloaded a three-run double.

Wausaukee capitalized on 4 more Peshtigo errors to score 3 tallies in the sixth for an 11-3 cushion. The lone hit in the inning was a single by Self.

The final two Rangers runs came about in the seventh on and error and two-out singles from Lewandowski, Self and Zach Struve.

Gillett Tops

Crivitz 6-1

Gillett rode the 7-hit pitching of Derek Zahn to its first conference win of the season, 6-1 over host Crivitz. The righthander fanned six while walking just one batter during his 7 inning mound stint.

Gillett took advantage of three errors to grab a 1-0 third inning lead as Drew Patenaude crossed the plate. In the fifth frame, number nine hitter Matt Noffke singled and scored on a balk.

The Tigers broke the game open with 3 runs on 4 hits in the sixth. Mike Scharenbrock and Alex Ranson singled while Zahn walked to load the bases. Noffke drove in one run with a single before Brad Mueller launched a two-run triple.

Tyler Hischke singled and scored the final Gillett run in the seventh.

AJ Garcia was tagged with the loss giving up 6 runs on 6 hits over 7 innings.

Coleman Cruises In

Doubleheader Sweep

Punching out 29 hits and getting some excellent pitching sparked Coleman to a 21-1 and 16-3 doubleheader sweep of visiting Stephenson.

In the opener, the Cougars rode the no-hit mound performance from Mike Mergener (3 innings) and Lucas Markiewicz (2) to the 21-1 win. Coleman scored 11 runs in the first inning then added 4 in the second and 5 in the third to win going away.

Mergener picked up the pitching win with 5 strikeouts and two walks over 3 frames while Markiewicz recorded one strikeout and no free passes during his stint on the hill.

At the plate Mitch and Mason Mergener, along with Jake Engels and Trevor Seewald ripped two hits each. Engels scored 4 runs and drove in 3 while Mike and Mason Mergener tallied 3 runs each.

Southpaw Alex Starzynski was tagged with the loss getting battered for 12 runs on 8 hits and 7 walks in two innings of work. Trevor Christopherson and Travis Phillips added relief help.

Game two was more of the same.....all Coleman.

With Mitch Champagne collecting 3 hits and driving in 3 runs, the Cougars lashed 15 hits to pocket a 16-3 win. Coleman owned a 10-zip cushion after two innings then added 6 runs in the fourth to collect the 5-inning victory.

Adding two hits each were Derek Marquardt (3 RBIs), Engels (3 runs and 2 RBIs), Jackson Margis (2 runs) and Dexter Karban 2 singles.

Mitch Mergener started for Coleman allowing no runs and no hits over 2 frames with 2 walks and 2 strikeouts. First reliever Engels notched the mound win despite giving up 3 runs on 3 hits before Marquardt fanned all 3 batters in the top of the fifth.

-Saturday’s Results-

Wausaukee Stuns

Oconto Falls 4-2

The Rangers pulled off a minor upset with a 4-2 non-league victory over host Oconto Falls Saturday. Wausaukee combined 9 hits with a complete game 4-hit pitching performance from junior southpaw Cole Lewandowski.

“We played a good all around game. Cole pitched well and I expected Oconto Falls to hit the ball better than they did. He threw strikes and for the most part was ahead of the batters...finished with 89 pitches,” Wickman said.

Wausaukee jumped out to a 3-0 second inning lead thanks to 3 hits and a pair of Panther errors. Zach Struve got aboard on a miscue and moved to second on a bunt by Aaron Schlies. Designated hitter Dillon Meyers drove in Struve with a single while Edlbeck followed with a base knock. Another error on third sacker Tyler Magnin allowed DeLaet to get aboard before Lewandowski capped the inning with a RBI single.

The Rangers stretched the lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning on a single by DeLaet, stolen base and run scoring double off the bat of Austin Carter.

Oconto Falls cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fourth on doubles by Tyler Magnin and Taylor Brabant, single by Mike Nompleggi along with a sac fly off the bat of Ethan Berth.

After giving up a single in the 5th inning, Lewandowski set the final 7 batters down in order.

Gillett Dealt

Twinbill Loss

Hosting Bonduel (7-4) in a doubleheader, the Tigers came up on the wrong end of 10-2 and 17-4 drubbings.

In the opener, Bonduel punched out 12 hits while scoring 3 runs in the third and two each in the first, second and fifth frames. Barrett Bohm and Jared Staszak shared mound chores for Bonduel, walking 5 and striking out 7.

Derek Zahn took the loss yielding 7 runs and 9 hits over 3 innings before Drew Patenaude finished out the game.

The only 3 Gillett hits came off the bats of Zahn, Matt Noffke and Seth Rudie.

Drew Wudtke paced Bonduel with 2 hits and 3 RBIs.

In the nightcap, Bonduel jammed the plate for 6 runs in the sixth and 5 in the seventh to cruise to a lopsided 17-4 win. Ben Wallenberg, Brandon Hogel and Nick Schuetz tallied 2 hits each for Bonduel.

Gillett saw Jeremy Cibulka lash 3 hits in 4 plate appearances and give his mates a 2-0 second inning lead with a single.

Brady Hicks started for Gillett getting roughed up for 11 runs on 4 hits and 5 walks over 5 1/3 innings. Patenaude and Noffke added relief help.
