Coleman Moves Into Top Spot

In a battle for sole possession of the M-O Conference baseball lead, defending champion Coleman pounded out 14 hits and used some sensational defensive plays to turn back Wausaukee Monday 10-3.

The victory, coupled with a 12-0 shellacking of Crivitz, leaves the Cougars with a 5-0 conference mark at the midway point of the season.

In notching the big road win over Wausaukee, Coleman rallied from a 2-0 first inning deficit to move into the top spot of the 6-team circuit. Currently ranked fourth in the latest Division 4 state polls, Coleman improved to 13-1 overall and 5-0 in league play.

On the other side of the diamond, the 5th ranked Wausaukee Rangers fell to 12-1 overall and 4-1 in the M-O.

“These kids have faced pressure during football and wrestling seasons, and really stepped it up against Wausaukee. We played a great all around game...pitching, hitting and defense. When I got to the field, I could see it in their eyes they were ready. Even when we trailed early, we didn’t panic, just kept on working hard until the offense got going,” Coleman coach Kent Casper said.

Coleman will put its unbeaten mark on the line Thursday hosting Peshtigo at 4:30pm before entertaining Gillett (5-5, 2-3) on Tuesday, May 8.

Wausaukee hits the road for a pair of league outings at Gillett and Crivitz.

The Peshtigo Bulldogs (3-8,3-2) made the biggest move this week registering wins over Gillett 22-6, Lena-STAA 9-0 and Crivitz 12-3 in 8 innings. The shutout of the Titans featured a no-hitter from Zach Neumann, who fanned 8 and registered 6 put outs from the mound in the 7 inning affair.

Coleman Clobbers

Crivitz On No-Hitter

The Cougars had too much of everything Thursday pounding visiting Crivitz 12-0 in 5 innings.

The mound duo of Derek Marquardt and Mason Mergener combined to toss a no-hitter with 6 strikeouts and 4 walks while the Cougar offense battered Crivitz hurler Cody Wolf for 12 runs on 14 hits. The

Leading the way for Coleman was Mitch Champagne with 3 hits and 2 runs scored. Collecting two hits each were Mason Mergener (3 RBI) and Jake Engels while Champagne and Mike Mergener crossed the plate twice each.

Coleman’s offense started early and never stopped, scoring 4 runs in the first, 3 in the second, 2 in the third and 3 in the fourth.

In the opening frame, Mitch Mergener, Champagne and Mason Mergener (2 RBI) punched out singles while Marquardt ripped a two-run double.

With one out in the second inning, Mitch Mergener walked, Champagne doubled, Mike Mergener ripped a two-run double while Mason and Engels chipped in with singles for a 7-zip spread.

Coleman got back into the scoring column in the third as Adam Zeitler and Trevor Bushmaker slapped hits while Champagne ripped a run scoring single.

The final 3 runs came about in the fourth as Engels singled, Marquardt walked, Lucas Markiewicz lashed a run scoring single and Adam Zeitler doubled.

Wausaukee Whips

Lena-STAA 26-1

Talk about a rout!

The Rangers pounded out 19 hits, including 3 by Joe Jaworski, in cruising to a 26-1 rout of the host Titans.

Wausaukee put this game away early, building up an 8-lead after two innings and never looked back.

“The kids played hard and we were able to take advantage of errors. Beau DeLaet threw a nice game for us, got ahead of the hitters and gave up that one hit,” Wickman said.

Seven Wausaukee hitters lashed two safeties each...Brett Edlbeck, DeLaet, Cole Lewandowski (5 RBI), Austin Carter (4 RBI), Jesse Parr, Aaron Schlies and Dillon Meyers.

In the first inning, Edlbeck cracked a leadoff double, while 3 walks, a RBI single from Schlies and run scoring two-bagger off the bat of Meyer gave Wausaukee a quick 6-0 lead.

Singles by DeLaet and Zach Struve along with 2 errors padded the cushion to 8-zip. Jaworski, Meyers and Carter tallied hits in the fourth for a 10-0 lead.

Taking a 10-1 edge into the fifth, Wausaukee jammed the plate for 13 runs on 9 hits to win going away. Lewandowski drove in 4 runs in the inning with a single and double, Jaworski added 3 RBI with a single and double while Brennan Gabriel registered a two-run double.

The lone run for the Titans came in the fourth frame as Dean Jopek doubled, moved to third on a wild pitch before scoring on a ground out by Mitchell Harvey.

Peshtigo Punches Out

19 Hits In First Win 22-6

After suffering 8 straight losses to open the season, the Bulldogs finally got on the winning track with a 22-6 rout of host Gillett.

Coach Pat Robbins troops pounded out a season-high 19 hits, including 4 by Joey Sparks and 3 each from Cody Nielson and Matt Borkovec.

“All I can say, it is about time. You know how hitting goes, once somebody starts everybody else gets going. We had a couple of hits early and hit some balls hard, so that got us going. We swung at good pitches and hit them...didn’t let the pitches go. Overall it was a fun game,” Robbins said. “James Brabant really surprised me. The first time up he hit a ball off the fence then the next time put one over the fence.”

The Bulldogs took control in the opening inning, scoring 9 runs on 7 hits. Joey Sparks registered a pair of singles in the uprising while Brabant sent a pair of runners home with a double.

In the second inning, Borkovec got aboard on an error then jogged home as Brabant belted a two-run homer for an 11-0 lead.

Gillett managed to cut the deficit to 11-6 by scoring one run in the second inning and 5 in the third. A two-run double by Drew Patenaude and run scoring single from Alex Ransom highlighted the rally.

Looking to stay ahead, Peshtigo answered with 11 runs on 7 hits in the fifth to win via the run rule. Joey Sparks collected a pair of hits and drove in two runs, Trevor Bero added a two-run double, Borkovec two hits and a RBI while winning pitcher Jordan Berth ripped a two-run single.

Berth earned the mound win allowing 6 runs on 3 hits with 5 walks and 5 strikeouts. Joey Sparks wrapped up the game, fanning 2 batters in the final inning.

“Jordan pitched a nice game and had a long layoff in the fifth inning, so we took him out. Joey threw well in his appearance,” Robbins said.

Brad Mueller started for Gillett, getting separated for 11 runs on 9 hits over 2 innings. Matt Noffke (1-plus innings) and Brady Hicks (two innings) finished up.

Neumann Fires No-HitterAs Peshtigo Rolls 9-Zip

Sophomore righthander Zach Neumann tossed a no-hitter to lead Peshtigo to a 9-0 win over host Lena-STAA. Neumann set down 8 Titans on strikes while issuing a pair of walks.

“Zach pitched really well and quite honestly kept us in the game. I have never seen a game like that where all he needed was a catcher and first baseman and registered 6 put outs by himself through 5 innings to go along with the strikeouts, “ Robbins said.

While Neumann silenced the Titan bats, losing pitcher Kiefer Powers gave up just 3 hits through 6 1/3 innings. His biggest problem was control, walking 11 and fanning 11.

Peshtigo finally broke the scoreless outing with 4 runs on 2 hits in the fifth. Bero singled and Joey Sparks walked, Nielson slapped a RBI single and Derek Koronkiewicz reached on an error. A RBI single by Nick Sparks and error capped the inning.

In the sixth, Joey Sparks doubled, stole third and scored on a wild pitch.

Taking a 5-0 spread into the 7th, Peshtigo tacked on 4 more runs on just one hit. Four walks, two hit batsmen and a two-run single by Nielson did the damage.

“We continue to struggle at the plate and I just can’t believe how we go from getting all those hits at Gillett Thursday to just four on Friday,” Robbins said.

Coleman Cruises Past

Wausaukee Into First

Putting together their most complete game of the season, Coleman overcame an early 2-0 deficit to move into sole possession of the M-O lead with a 10-3 win over Wausaukee.

You name it and Coleman did it. And did it well!

The Cougars punched out 14 hits and saw a number of shots get turned into outs by the Rangers. In the pitching department, reigning conference player of the year, Mason Mergener scattered 5 hits over 6 innings before giving way to hard throwing Derek Marquardt in the seventh. The duo combined for 4 walks and 4 strikeouts, but only three runs.

Defensively the Cougars were sparked by the performance of shortstop Mike Mergener, who came up with a trio of plays that were “web gems”. Displaying some unbelievable range, Mergener turned some sure Wausaukee hits into routine outs, which helped squelch any potential rallies.

“This was a great performance by our kids... stepped up to the challenge of a big game and came through with flying colors. Hitting, defense and pitching were all outstanding,” Casper said. “Mike Mergener made some fantastic plays at shortstop.”

While Casper complimented the play of his troops, Wausaukee boss Bill Wickman was somewhat disappointed.

“Coleman outplayed us in every aspect...better hitting, pitching and defense. Brett didn’t have total command of his pitches and our defense let him down in the third inning with 3 mental errors and two physical ones,” Wickman said. “So far this year we’ve been hitting the ball, but against poor pitching. We ran into a good pitcher from Coleman and our hitting showed it.”

The top five hitters in the Coleman lineup did most of the damage socking out 12 hits and scoring 8 runs. Number two swinger Mitch Champagne went 3-5 with a single, double and triple; Mike Mergener 3-5 with two singles, double and 2 RBI; Mason Mergener 3-4 with 3 RBI while Jake Engels slapped out two singles.

Cleanup batter Austin Carter collected 3 of Wausaukee’s 6 hits while Edlbeck, Beau DeLaet and Dillon Meyers had the other safeties.

In the early going, Wausaukee held the upper hand using a nifty 5-3 double play to escape first inning trouble. In the bottom of frame, Edlbeck and DeLaet lashed singles and moved up a base on a bunt from Cole Lewandowski. Carter walked while Eddy Self drove in a run with a sac fly to right. On the throw in, Carter raced to second with DeLaet scampering home.

After getting blanked for two innings, Coleman unloaded 5 runs on 3 hits in the third to take control. An one-out error allowed Trevor Seewald to reach base before three straight hits fueled the rally. Champagne ripped a double and crossed the plate with Seewald on a two-run double by Mike Mergener. Mason Mergener followed with a run scoring single for a 3-2 lead. Two more errors and a RBI ground out by Marquardt sent the final runs home.

Coleman pushed the lead to 6-2 in the fourth when Champagne laced a leadoff triple over the head of centerfielder Lewandowski and scored on a single by Mason Mergener.

Taking that 6-2 cushion into the fifth, Coleman sent 12 batters to the plate and put the game away with 4 runs on 6 hits. Lucas Markiewicz and Trevor Bushmaker opened the frame with singles. A sac bunt by pinch hitter Dexter Karban advanced both runners 90 feet with the top of the order coming up. Mitch Mergener flicked a two-run single to right before brothers, Mike and Mason added hits. Engels capped the uprising with a single.

Trailing 10-2, Wausaukee tacked on its final tally in the fifth as DeLaet got aboard on an error and scored on a single by Carter.

“I told our kids after the game, there is a lot of season left and we need to just keep on playing hard,” Wickman said.

Peshtigo Erupts For 9

Runs In 8th Inning To

Defeat Crivitz 12-3

Jamming the plate for 9 runs in the 8th inning, Peshtigo notched its third straight conference win with a 12-3 road victory over Crivitz.

The Bulldogs took a 3-0 first inning lead only to see Crivitz push across single runs in the first, third and seventh frames to force extra innings.

With the game deadlocked at 3-all, Peshtigo sent 14 batters to the plate and combined 5 walks with 4 hits for the win. Nick Sparks swung the big bat in the 8th with a single and double while Matt Borkovec tacked on a pair of singles.

Borkovec finished with 5 hits in 5 plate appearances and 2 runs scored, Nick Sparks 3 hits and 2 runs while Joey Sparks added 2 hits and two runs.

Jordan Berth went the distance for Peshtigo giving up 6 hits and 3 runs with 7 walks and 11 strikeouts.

AJ Garcia took the loss yielding 8 runs on 9 hits over 7-plus innings before Jake Sawinski got the call for the final 3 outs.

Gillett Turns Back

Lena-STAA 9-3

Gillett rode a 3-hitter from righthander Derek Zahn to rally for a 9-3 home win over Lena-STAA. Zahn fanned 12 and did not walk any batters in his route going performance.

Gillett took a 1-0 second inning lead on a single by Brady Hicks then saw Drew Patenaude and Tyler Hischke single for a 2-0 spread in the third.

Kept in check for most of the game, the Titans tallied 3 runs on one hit in the sixth for a 3-2 lead. A trio of fielder choice plays along with a single by Dean Jopek gave the Titans the upper hand.

The lead didn’t last very long as Gillett answered with 7 runs on 3 hits in the sixth to earn the win. Five walks, a hit batsman and singles by Hicks, Patenaude and Hischke did the damage.

Wausaukee Slips

Past Norway 8-7

After jumping out to a 6-0 lead in the first inning, Wausaukee had to hold on for dear life to turn back host Norway Friday 8-7.

The Knights closed within 7-6 after two frames before the Rangers pushed across the eventual game winner in the 6th.

Brett Edlbeck paced the 10 hit attack with 3 singles while Aaron Schlies added a two-run single and double.

Cole Lewandowski started for Wausaukee giving up 6 runs on 5 hits with 4 walks and 4 strikeouts. Edlbeck added 2 innings of scoreless relief to collect the mound win, fanning 2 and allowing 2 hits.

John Grayvold went the distance for Norway yielding 8 runs on 10 hits with 2 walks and 7 strikeouts.
