I am writing in response to Mr. Meetz’s, Town of Athelstane Supervisor, letter in the May 3 publication.
1. If Mr. Meetz was really listening to the towns people, he would know that he should resign from the town board.
2. Your statement “In order for the Town of Athelstane to function at its best, there first must be a town board who all agree that the residents of the town and their tax dollars should be in the board’s best interest.” is incorrect. Tax dollars should not be spent in the boards best interest, they should be spent in the taxpayers best interest.
3. All the records Mr. Meetz has asked for are open records and always available upon request. The only thing that has been denied him are the Social Security numbers of town employees for which he has been asking since day one. For what illegal purpose does he want those numbers.
4. The 2009 Ford plow truck the town purchased was the only truck that all the equipment installers recommended. Sure the town could have purchased a cheaper truck, but the town would have to replace it sooner. All the equipment that was installed on this plow truck was done in stainless steal so that it too would last for a long time. Cheaper isn’t always better if you constantly have to replace it.
5. The Western Star truck is not just built for the interstate. I have personally driven that truck on every public road in the township. If it’s the wing your afraid of, then you shouldn’t be driving it. The other reason the town went with the Western Star is because we have to haul gravel for 60 miles of gravel roads and it has a greater hauling capacity.
6. As far as the maintenance records on the equipment - Mr. Meetz never asked me for them. After they wrongfully fired me, I found out Mr. Meetz and the new employee cleaned out the desks in the shop and threw all the records in the trash.
7. The permits Mr. Meetz was concerned with were always followed through on and completed with the DNR every year.
8. The stolen computer was reported the same day it was found missing. Since there was a key broke off in the lock everyone was asked to produce their keys for the town hall. Isn’t it interesting that the only one who could not do so was the Chairman.
9. Mr. Meetz takes credit for the black topping and seal coating of Mathis Rd. It was the PRIOR town board who saved, budgeted for and got the bids for that work. The current board under Mr. Wutkowski and Mr. Meetz have not budgeted any money for black topping of any kind or for making any new gravel to put on the towns gravel roads. They keep purchasing gravel at a higher cost.
10. I find it sad that Mr. Wutkowski and Mr. Meetz took office in April of 2011 and did not ask to see the budget or financial records until late October, which was right before the new budget had to be done.
11. Now Mr. Meetz is complaining about being called Jackpine. This is the name he used on the ballot in April 2011.
12. We do not take attendance of the people in the audience at our town meetings. For those of us who attend every month, we do not remember seeing Mr. Meetz at very many meetings prior to him taking office. If he was so concerned about how taxpayers money was being spent, then maybe he should have been coming to the town meetings.
13. Mr. Meetz, who is the town’s dog catcher, has yet to buy a dog license for his own dog per the state statute. Apparently he is above the law.
14. The town was a major customer at the gas station in Athelstane until Mr. Meetz put a stop to buying it locally. The gas station had to then close its doors. Thanks for thinking of your taxpayers on that one.
15. Mr. Meetz also moved an old mobile home onto his property without getting the proper permits. He also kicked out the fire inspector that is required by the state to inspect his business 2 times a year. Again he thinks he is above the law.
16. Mr. Wutkowski and Mr. Meetz gave themselves a raise by getting internet and cell phones paid for by the taxpayers without the people’s approval. By state statutes that has to be approved by the people. No other township in this county pays for this for their board members.
17. Mr. Meetz also feels it is okay to ride around town in town equipment and flip off any taxpayer he sees.
18. Mr. Meetz talks about saving taxpayers money but he and Mr. Wutkowski have outspent all prior town boards on attorney fees. They have spent approximately $3,800 in a year’s time compared to $800 in the prior four years. There is an organization called the Towns Association where you can get a lot of the information you seek from an attorney and guess what - it’s FREE.
19. It should also be known that Mr. Wutkowski has stated in Town meetings “that this is my town not the people’s.” Wrong - this is the people’s town.
20. You personally had the phone company install a phone line in the fire department that was not asked for or needed. There was an installation fee of $135. How much did that cost to get disconnected? A waste of taxpayers money.
21. You also wasted taxpayers money installing a security camera in the town shop to spy on trusted town employees. Then you had the nerve to point the outside camera in the neighbor’s yard. What purpose did that serve?
22. How many new town employees have you and Mr. Wutkowski hired illegally?
23. The taxpayers also need to know that you did not do your homework before wrongfully firing the road foreman. The town is paying for my unemployment because the town did not have unemployment insurance. So now the town is paying for three road crew workers and only getting work from two. Do the taxpayers also know that Mr. Meetz and Mr. Wutkowski changed the employee handbook at least three times to satisfy their needs and not the workers? How much did that cost the taxpayers since you used the attorney for that.
24. The taxpayers also need to be aware that neither Mr. Meetz nor Mr. Wutkowski showed up for a planned town meeting on Friday, April 27. This meeting was not rescheduled in time in order to save the taxpayers money on the recall election.
Again, Mr. Meetz, if you are truly listening to the towns people you and Mr. Wutkowski need to resign.

Warm weather is here. I would like to remind all Rural Mail Customers (anyone with a mail box at the end of their driveway) that now is the time to fix or replace their mail boxes. They should also spray or tape a dryer sheet to the inside back wall of their mail box to keep bugs out.
Federal regulations state that the mailbox must be 42 inches to the BOTTOM of their box (+ or - an inch may be okay). Their door should close easily and remain closed on ONE try. They are also required to have their address (or fire number) in 3 inch numbers on the right side of their box (the side their mail carrier approaches or front door if in a cluster of boxes).
Federal regulations state that mailboxes not at normal height, or not in normal operation (missing doors, rusted, bug infestation, not marked etc...) that mail can be held at the post office for pickup until the discrepancy is fixed.
If customers have a dog, have it restrained if you expect a package that might not fit in your box. I would also recommend that customers that share a driveway or entrance put their number on their house easily seen so a Carrier will know which home to deliver packages. If they expect a large package leave a note taped on their front door (or screen door window) where their carrier can easily see as to where they want their packages left not by the main door.
I would also like to say that every route has Substitute Carriers and this will aid in getting their mail. Some Substitute Carriers drive for more than one route and may not have driven that route. If anyone should receive mail NOT as addressed (NOT theirs) just put it back in their box with the flag up. Take pride in your home - your mail box is the first thing we notice.

This is something that has been on my mind for a long time but now that Peshtigo is finally going to get a much needed facelift, it’s been bothering me even more. Namely, the placement of the “Cans for Kids” receptacle. I know it’s for a worthwhile cause (which I do support) but this is a fenced-in, kennel-type area filled with garbage bags of cans, in the middle of downtown, in one of the most visible spots in the city. As important as it may be, it doesn’t change the fact that it is very unsightly. I doubt I’m the only one who wonders why it can’t be moved to a less conspicuous, but still accessible, location. Anyone who wants to donate cans will figure out where to go.
On a related note, since “Cans for Kids” helps support and maintain the skateboard park, maybe there could be more supervision there. Where’s the pride in the skateboard park? On numerous occasions when I’ve walked through the area I’ve noticed litter strewn about, damage within the skating area, and graffiti. I’ve gone by when kids are there but I rarely see parents or other adults around. Maybe the random presence of adults would help curb some of the non-skating activities.
I’m sure there are others who share my thoughts but, like me, don’t want to make waves and aren’t sure who to approach.

To the Editor:
Thanks to the cowardly liberal who defaced the Scott Walker sign in Townsend Saturday night. It took a lot of courage to stop on a dark road and spray bomb the sign on private property.
Personally I hope that it stays as is to remind people of the outrageous tactics used by the far left over the past year. Lest we forget, remember those who defaced our Capital, broke windows to illegally enter the building, tore up the grounds and cost taxpayers tens of thousands of dollars to clean up the mess. Also don’t forget those UW doctors who gave out permission slips to “professionals” attending the protest rallies so they could get paid for their time away from their jobs. Finally, remember the Democratic Senators who fled to Illinois instead of doing the job they were elected by voters to do.
Now the Democrats would have you forget about all those antics sponsored by the far left that centered on the state employee and teachers unions stranglehold on the legislature. Instead they are focusing on the job situation here in Wisconsin. They forget to mention that a large share of those lost jobs are in Milwaukee where candidate Tom Barrett is in charge. They also forget to mention that while Jim Doyle was governor the state lost 164,000 jobs (per the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel on Sunday ,May 6). It was also mentioned in the same article that Wisconsin did indeed lose 23,900 jobs from March of 2011 to 2012 but 17,800 of them were government jobs while 6,100 were in the private sector. Yes, we lost some private sector jobs but what employer would want to add to payroll costs during such a tumultuous time. When Scott Walker has this election behind him I firmly believe that businesses will see a “green light” to start hiring and growing our Wisconsin economy.
Please stand with Scott Walker in the upcoming election. Scott was elected to a four year term by the majority of voters here in Wisconsin. He deserves a full term in office to see his policies bear fruit. Don’t let a minority who want to go back to budget deficits and higher taxes have their way. Join me in voting for Scott Walker on Tuesday, June 5.

In the report from the recent Council meeting, it said Joan Alloy DEMANDED to know if there was an ordinance requiring property owners to clean up any yard messes in 30 days or have the city do it and then bill them.
I did not demand, I very politely asked if anyone in the room knew of this ordinance. No one spoke up, but that’s a good thing because we don’t have anyone to enforce our ordinances in the first place!

Recently while at a layover at the airport in Atlanta, Ga., I met a soldier returning home from Afghanistan. I asked him what it was like there.
He told of the cold at night and the heat during the day. He said the people didn’t trust us and most didn’t want us there. At times they were somewhat friendly and they felt at night we would try to do them harm, as in Vietnam.
I asked him about the opium poppy production and how that was being handled. Until five years ago the military destroyed poppy fields. He said the farmers were given a regulated size plot to plant their crop.
He said our military was assisting in the production and harvest and then paid for the crop.
Since the U.S. stopped destroying the poppy fields, the streets of America are flooded with cheap heroin. Now we have a more deadly and more expensive war as a result of U.S. foreign policy.
One of Obama’s campaign promises four years ago was to end our wars.

To the Editor:
I am a graduate of the Wausaukee School District and a veteran who has proudly served his country. I recently attended my first school board meeting and was appalled and ashamed of the actions and behavior of the Wausaukee Board of Education and in particular, the School Board President, Dave Kipp.
His arrogant “I am the boss” attitude was demeaning. I felt that he was very disrespectful to the taxpayers in attendance by acting as if he was doing us a favor by listening, even though art one point he was looking at his phone while a concerned citizen was speaking.
Part of being a leader is making tough decisions but another part is having the courage to answer questions regarding that decision. The Wausaukee Board of Education has repeatedly refused to answer to the public. Wisconsin has Scott Walker and now Wausaukee has Dave Kipp. Our School District cannot be a one-man show and if we as taxpayers continue to allow this to go on, our children will suffer.

Letter to Editor:
I took the opportunity to sit in at the school board meeting in Wausaukee in April. I was discouraged by the apparent lack of discussion on any of the issues that were voted on. It appeared everything was being dictated by a single board member.
He would simply say he would accept a nomination for a vote, it would get seconded, then he would ask for all in favor. Even though some votes were not unanimous, he never asked for those opposed.
There was then an offer to take questions from the public. Several parents and taxpayers stood and after identifying themselves, asked legitimate questions. The board then made no response or told the party speaking they were going to be timed.
Since the board members are elected by the public, it is very difficult to understand how the board can ignore the questions, or the statements and wishes of the public that elected them. How did the residents ever let things get so out of control? There is no doubt in my mind that residents have become totally complacent and willing to let a very few dictate to them.
It is our tax dollars that pay these people, and yet, we were treated with what I thought was total disrespect.
