Coleman Remains Perfect

In their only M-O Conference clash of the week, the Coleman Cougars (15-1, 6-0) remained unbeaten in league play following a 10-zip pounding of Peshtigo Thursday. Coleman broke open a tight game to win in six innings.

Coach Kent Casper’s diamond gang might be perfect in the M-O, but they did lose a home game against Gillett on Tuesday to Mother Nature as rain forced the postponement until Friday.

Second place Wausaukee (14-1, 6-1) notched a pair of lopsided wins to move within a half game of the leaders. Coach Bill Wickman’s troops blanked Gillett 7-0 Friday then overcame the weather to edge host Crivitz in a rain-shortened affair 10-1 in 6 innings Tuesday.

Both wins came compliments of righthander Beau DeLaet, who allowed just one run during his mound appearances.

Elsewhere in the M-O, Peshtigo built up an 8-2 cushion after two innings against Lena-STAA Tuesday, before the rains hit. The game will be made up from the point of interruption on Friday afternoon.

Crivitz earned a 7-0 forfeit win Friday as Lena-STAA was unable to field enough players for a makeup outing.

Conference play is entering its final week and will conclude on Thursday, May 17.

Coleman Cleans Up

On Peshtigo 10-Zip

Getting another dominating mound performance, Coleman remained unbeaten in the M-O Conference with a 10-0 win over visiting Peshtigo. The pitching contingent of Derek Marquardt, Trevor Bushmaker and Mitch Mergener combined to fan 6 and walk just 2 in the six inning affair.

While the Cougar pitching silenced Peshtigo, the offense struggled early against Zach Neumann. Coming off a nifty no-hit gem against Lena-STAA last week, Neumann allowed one run and two hits through 3 innings. Over the final three innings, the game slipped away as Coleman tallied 9 runs to win via the 10-run rule.

“We got another excellent pitching performance, played great defense and took us a while to get going with the bats.We still had 11 hits, which is a good day,” Casper said.

Coleman grabbed a 1-0 second inning lead when Jake Engels lashed a one-out single, moved to second on a balk before racing home on a single by Marquardt.

The Cougars upped the edge to 4-0 in the fourth inning on 4 hits. Mason Mergener and Engels singled and raced home on another Marquardt RBI single and ground out by Markiewicz. After swiping second base, Marquardt scored on a hit from Bushmaker.

Three more Cougars made their way home in the fifth on three hits and two walks. Champagne drew a leadoff walk and moved to third on a single by Mike Mergener, before scoring on Mason’s hit. Engels greeted relief pitcher Jordan Berth with a RBI single and Marquardt received a bases loaded walk. Engels tallied the final run on a sac fly from Bushmaker.

Three walks and two singles scored the final 3 runs. Mitch Mergener opened the bottom of the sixth with a single, Champagne walked, Mike and Mason Mergener (single) reached before Engels, Marquardt and Markiewicz earned free passes to end the game.

Mason Mergener and Engels slapped 3 hits each and Marquardt drove in 4 runs.

“Coleman is a really, really solid team. Zach did a good job, but you have to be so fine with Coleman, any mistake hurts you. Twice we had Champagne down 0-2, then he would foul a pitch off, come inside and let it go, foul off another pitch and let a ball go. We constantly tried to pitch around their hitters and once we got the ball up in the zone, they would jump on it,” Peshtigo coach Pat Robbins said.

Wausaukee

Tops Gillett

Making the most of 8 hits, Wausaukee stayed in second place in the baseball race with a 7-0 road win over Gillett.

The Rangers saw cleanup slugger Austin Carter drive in a pair of runs with a single and double, Aaron Schlies added two singles while number nine batter Dillon Meyers extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a single in the fifth.

Sophomore righthander Beau DeLaet collected the mound win scattering 5 hits over 6 innings with 6 strikeouts and two walks in an 82 pitch performance. Brett Edlbeck hurled a perfect seventh inning.

Carter struck out to open the second inning, but reached first base when the ball got past the catcher. After stealing second base, Carter raced home on a two-out single from Schlies.

DeLaet ripped a two-out double and scored on an error in the third before two more runs headed home in the fourth. Carter doubled to get things rolling and Eddy Self reached on an error. Carter scored on a wild pitch before a balk sent Self across the plate.

In the fifth frame, Meyers and Edlbeck punched out singles while Cole Lewandowski and Carter (2 RBI) added two-out hits.

Taking a 6-zip spread into the 7th, Wausaukee added its final run when DeLaet was hit by a pitch, moved to third on a passed ball and error before scoring on a groundout by Brennon Gabriel.

Derek Zahn took the loss for Gillett with relief help from Brady Hicks.

Brad Mueller paced Gillett with 2 hits and a pair of stolen bases.

Wausaukee Takes

Care Of Crivitz 10-1

Punching out 10 hits, Wausaukee turned back host Crivitz in a rain-shortened outing Tuesday 10-1.

The Rangers used 4 run outbursts in the third and sixth frames to take control.

“The Crivitz baseball field drains well and we probably played the final 3 innings in rain,” Wausaukee coach Bill Wickman said.

Austin Carter swung the big bat for Wausaukee with two singles and a triple while driving in 6 runs. Cole Lewandowski added a single, double and 3 runs while DeLaet walked twice, hit a two-run triple and scored a trio of runs.

In the third inning, Dillon Meyers singled, DeLaet laced a triple, Lewandowski run scoring double and Carter a RBI single.

A two-run single by Carter scored DeLaet (walk) and Lewandowski (walk) in the fifth for a 6-1 spread.

The final 4 Ranger runs came in the sixth as Joe Jaworski walked, moved to second on a bunt by Meyers and was joined on the sacks by DeLaet (walk) and Lewandowski (single). Up stepped Carter, who cleared the bases with a three-run double.

Parker DeLosSanto walked and scored the lone Crivitz run in the third inning on a single by Jake Sawinski.

Peshtigo Pounded

By Oconto Falls

Continuing their tough non-conference schedule, Peshtigo proved to be no match for visiting Oconto Falls Friday losing 13-0 in 5-innings.

The Bulldogs managed just two hits off Panther pitcher Jacob Mogged, who fanned 3 and did not issue any walks during his mound stint.

While Mogged kept the Bulldog batters in check, Oconto Falls teed off on a trio of hurlers for 9 hits and 13 runs. Mogged, Tyler Magnin and Ethan Berth paced the offense with 2 hits each.

Matt Borkovec worked the first 3-plus frames for Peshtigo, giving up 8 runs on 7 hits with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts. Joey Sparks was roughed up for 5 runs on one hit and beaned two batters in one-third of an inning before Trevor Bero threw shutout ball over the final 1 2/3 innings.

Oconto Falls took a 1-0 second inning lead as Ethan Berth doubled and scored on a single by David Drews. In the third frame Mogged singled and scored on a single by Berth.

Peshtigo’s biggest problem was the fourth inning as 17 Panthers stepped to the plate, scoring 11 runs on 5 hits. Toss in 3 Peshtigo errors, two hit batsmen, 3 walks and the damage was done. Mogged, Cody Nielson and two hits by Magnin sparked the uprising.

“We had three errors to start the inning and that came back to haunt us. The same thing happened at Shawano, we would play well for a while, make mistakes and didn’t have enough poise to recover from it. Borkovec pitched decent and deserved a better fate,” Robbins added.

Coleman Clobbers

Oconto Falls 8-2

Behind the pitching of Mason Mergener, the talented Cougars took care of visiting Oconto Falls Saturday 8-3.

Mason Mergener scattered 3 hits over 6 scoreless innings, striking out 3 and walking one before giving way to brother Mitch for the final frame. Mitch yielded 2 runs on one hit with two walks and a strikeout.

The Mergener brothers took care of the first run as Mike drew a two-out walk then wheeled it home on Mason’s run scoring double.

Coleman padded the lead to 7-0 in the third inning, scoring 6 runs on 4 hits. Trevor Seewald walked to start the frame and was bunted to second by Mitch Mergener. Champagne lashed a RBI single to left and later scored with Mason Mergener (single) and Engels (bean) on a three-run double off the bat of Marquardt. An error on Markiewicz’s grounder and single by Bushmaker sent the final tallies home.

In the fifth inning, Engels singled and headed home on a single by Bushmaker.

After failing to get any runners home against Mason Mergener, Oconto Falls waited until the 7th to score twice against Mitch. Two walks, an error and two-run single by Cole Krumrei produced the runs.

John Thompson (3 innings), Matt Fournier (2) and Colin Sigmund shared mound chores for Oconto Falls. The trio walked 2 and fanned one while giving up 6 earned runs.

Crivitz Defeats

Three Lakes 7-2

Cody Wolf scattered 4 hits over 7 innings to hurl Crivitz to a 7-2 win over Three Lakes Monday. Wolf finished with 6 strikeouts and did not issue any walks.

At the plate, the Wolverines poked out 7 hits off a pair of pitchers, including two each from Wolf, AJ Garcia and Tyler Wieting.

Crivitz tallied 4 runs in the first inning on a groundout by Jake Sawinski, two-run single from Wieting and a RBI double by Spencer Schwartz.

Wolf singled and scored on a single by Garcia in the second for a 5-0 spread before tacking on two more runs in the sixth. Wolf and Garcia lashed the safeties in the frame to score Colin Lange and Parker DeLosSantos.
