Marines Notch Pair Of Bay Wins

Putting together some of their best baseball of the season, the Marinette Marines pulled out a pair of narrow Bay Conference wins to improve to 5-6 in league play and 9-8 overall.

After getting postponed because of rain Thursday at Luxemburg-Casco, the Marines prevailed in a 2-0 pitcher’s duel over Oconto Falls Monday as junior Jake McMahon fashioned a nifty one-hitter with 9 strikeouts.

Victory number two came on Tuesday where Marinette made a three-run third inning stand up to turn back visiting Hortonville 3-2. Marinette got a huge lift from its defense and senior Charlie Klumb, who fired 5 innings of shutout relief to bail out starter Austin Belonga.

Marinette will embark on a four game slate with a makeup affair at Luxemburg-Casco Thursday, doubleheader at Denmark Saturday before entertaining Escanaba in a non-league outing on Tuesday, May 15.

McMahon’s Mound

Gem Keys 2-0 Win

Over Oconto Falls

In a Bay Conference clash dominated by pitching, Marinette slipped past visiting Oconto Falls Monday 2-0. The game lasted just 85 minutes as the Marines made single runs in the second and sixth frames stand up.

In a battle of hard throwing righthanders, Jake McMahon hurled a brilliant one-hitter with 9 strikeouts and 2 walks to earn the win. After surrendering a first inning single to Jacob Mogged, McMahon set down 15 batters in a row until walking John Thompson with one out in the sixth.

His mound counterpart, Mike Nompleggi, a UW-Whitewater baseball recruit, registered six whiffs while yielding a pair of unearned runs to suffer the loss.

Less than a month ago, Nompleggi set down 15 Marines on strikes in a 1-0 win.

“Jake pitched a very good game for us and was in control the whole way. We played good defense and made the routine plays behind him,” Marinette coach Dave Francour said. “I don’t think Nompleggi threw as hard as he did in Oconto Falls. He has pitched 8 conference games so far and they have won four of them.”

Looking to put the ball in play against Nompleggi, Marinette struck for a run in the second frame on just one hit. Charlie Klumb drew a one out walk, then raced to second as Nompleggi’s pickoff throw got past the first baseman. Joey Brosig, who punched out two of Marinette’s 4 hits, sent a seeing eye single to rightfield scoring Klumb.

With McMahon keeping Oconto Falls in check, Marinette added a big insurance tally in the sixth. Austin Belonga got aboard on an one-out error and scooted to third following a single by Luke Kelly and wild pitch.

With runners at the corners, Klumb sent a grounder up the middle which was misplayed by shortstop Colton Giese scoring Belonga. Oconto Falls escaped further trouble when Brosig popped into an inning ending 1-3 double play.

With just three outs to seal the win, McMahon closed things out in style whiffing Tyler Magnin and Nompleggi before coaxing Ethan Berth to ground to shortstop Derek Klegin for the final out.

“Our philosophy was to put the ball in play. We knew if we got the lead, Oconto Falls would have a tough time scoring runs as they are not a strong hitting team. We were able to capitalize on a couple of their mistakes to win,” Francour remarked.

Marinette Claims 3-2

Win Over Hortonville

Making the most of one inning, Marinette registered 3 runs in the third frame to slip past Hortonville Tuesday 3-2.

Trailing 2-0 heading into the inning, Marinette combined 3 hits with two walks and an error for the winning rally.

Joey Brosig doubled to open the inning then was joined on the sacks by number 8 and 9 hitters, Jake McMahon (walk) and Derek Klegin(sac bunt/single). Brosig later scored on a wild pitch and it looked like a big uprising until Hortonville hurler Ryley Rosenfeldt quieted things by fanning Aaron Pettit and Scott Eldredge.

With two out, Belonga stepped to the plate and came through with a clutch double, sending McMahon and Klegin home.

Marinette had only one other runner the rest of the game as Eldredge drew a two-out walk in the fifth.

Marinette starting pitcher Belonga struggled from the get-go as Hortonville took a 1-0 second inning lead when Dallas Hannus walked and scored on a single by Jake Bamke. The damage could have been worse as Andy Thompson (walk), but was gunned down by catcher Eldredge trying to steal second base.

In the third frame, Conner Hafeman walked and raced home as Nate Pritzl tripled to centerfield.

Coach Francour had seen enough and yanked Belonga in favor of relief pitcher Klumb.

Smart move. Klumb flirted with trouble the rest of the way, but kept Hortonville from scoring any more runs. He walked two batters in third inning following the triple by Pritzl, but escaped damage thanks to a 1-2-3 double play and groundout.

Klumb gave up a free pass in the fourth, hit a batter in the fifth, yielded a single and two walks in the sixth before allowing a 7th inning single. The Marinette defense came up big again in the 7th inning, turning a 4-6-3 double play after the leadoff single.

Klumb finished with 5 walks and 2 hits over 5 innings to pick up the mound win. Belonga was roughed up for 2 runs on 4 hits and 3 walks over 2 frames.

Rosenfeldt took the loss with 6 innings of 4 hit and 4 walk pitching.
