Marinette Knocks Off Bay Leading Phantoms For 9-7 League Record

Putting together a late season winning surge, the Marinette Marines knocked off a pair of Bay Conference heavyweights to finish third in the final league standings.

Sitting at 15-9 overall and 9-7 in Bay action, the Marines topped Seymour 2-0 Thursday on a two-hitter from Luke Kelly then disposed of champion West DePere 6-3 Monday afternoon.

The Bay wins, coupled with a 10-0 whitewash of Wausaukee Friday, stretches Marinette’s winning streak to 4 games and 9 of their last 10.

With the regular season concluded, the Marines will entertain Bay foe Oconto Falls in the WIAA Division 2 tournament opener Friday at Pedersen Park. The teams split a pair of conference clashes with Oconto Falls prevailing 1-0 behind 15 strikeouts from Mike Nompleggi while Marinette captured a 2-0 home win three weeks later.

“I’m sure we will see Nompleggi again. He is one of the best pitchers in the conference and we’ll have our hands full with him. It will be a tough game,” Marinette coach Dave Francour said.

The first pitch will be thrown at 4:30pm. The winner will head to Seymour on Tuesday, May 29 for a regional semifinal affair.

Kelly Hurls Marines

Past Seymour 2-0

Getting another strong pitching performance from senior Luke Kelly, the Marines made the most of 4 hits to slip past host Seymour Thursday 2-0. Kelly registered 7 strikeouts, walked two and gave up just 2 hits in his complete game effort.

“We got a strong performance from Kelly...threw strikes and got ahead of the hitters. He escaped a jam in the sixth inning, which was a big part of the game,” Francour said. “I don’t know why, but we took a lot of pitches and third strikes against a pitcher that had a little curve and decent speed.”

Marinette gave Kelly all the support he needed in the opening inning, pushing across one run on two hits. Scott Eldredge lashed a one-out triple then raced home on a single by Nathan Kallestad.

The Marines lead grew to 2-0 in the fourth when Austin Belonga ripped a leadoff double and was joined on the sacks by Kelly (beaned). After Joey Brosig moved both runners up 90 feet, Charlie Klumb lofted a sac fly to score Belonga.

Protecting the slim edge, Kelly ran into trouble in the sixth on consecutive singles before a groundout and pop out thwarted the rally.

Marinette threatened again in the 7th when Klumb drew a leadoff walk and moved to second base on a bunt by Max Hipke. He went no further as Derek Klegin whiffed and Aaron Pettit flew out to left field.

Marines Upend Bay

Champ Phantoms

With Belonga holding the West DePere swingers to 5 hits, the Marines rallied for a 6-3 win over the league champions. Belonga fanned 7 and walked 4 during his 7-inning mound stint. After giving up two runs in the first inning, Belonga didn’t yield another run until the sixth.

“Austin started off slow but gained momentum as the game went on. He held West DePere down for the most part,” Francour added.

Marinette got even on the scoreboard in the third frame with a one-out rally. Scott Eldredge and Max Hipke walked while Belonga (RBI) and Kelly followed with singles. Charlie Klumb sent Hipke home with the second run on a fielder’s choice groundout.

The score stayed tied until the sixth when both teams produced runs. A walk, wild pitch and two Marinette errors allowed a run to score.

It didn’t matter as the Marines answered with 4 runs on 3 hits in the bottom of the frame. Klumb opened the inning with a single and was joined on the sacks by Joey Brosig (beaned) and Jake McMahon, who saw his sac bunt get thrown away scoring Klumb.

Pinch hitter Nathan Kallestad followed with a two-run single, Aaron Pettit singled before Eldredge capped the uprising with a sac fly.

Belonga completed his mound performance in style, using a groundout and pair of strikeouts to end the game.

“Kallestad had a big hit for us in the sixth. It was a good game for us, but we didn’t hit the ball like we wanted to,” Francour concluded.

Marinette Routs

Wausaukee 10-0

Stepping off the Bay diamonds, Marinette rode a stingy one-hitter from junior hurler Jake McMahon to a lopsided 10-0 win over visiting Wausaukee. The Marines dominated this Friday clash from start to finish, combining 7 hits with 9 walks and one hit batsman to cruise to the 5-inning win.

Number two swinger, Eldredge, sparked the Marines with 3 hits and a run, while Aaron Pettit and McMahon scored one run each.

Marinette tallied two runs in the first inning on a single by Joey Brosig, two errors and a sac fly by Pettit.

Holding that 2-0 edge, the Marines took control in the fourth jamming the plate for 7 runs on 3 hits and 5 walks. McMahon and Derek Klegin poked singles to open the inning, Pettit walked, Eldredge singled before Nathan Kallestad and Austin Belonga drew free passes.

That marked the end of the line for Wausaukee southpaw Cole Lewandowski, who was replaced by Brennon Gabriel. Walks to Luke Kelly and Calvin Michiels along with a sac fly from McMahon pushed the lead to 9-0.

Marinette needed only four batters to win via the 10-run rule in the fifth. Pettit walked, Eldredge singled, Ty Bebo walked and with the bases loaded, Max Hipke was hit by a pitch to send in the 10th run.,

McMahon fanned 9 and allowed just one hit, a fourth inning double off the bat of Brett Edlbeck.
