Redbirds Swept By Nationals; Crivitz Claims Wishigan Win

It was a tough weekend for defending regular season and Wishigan playoff champion Marinette Redbirds (1-3) as they were swept by visiting West Allis Nationals in a 3-game series. The birds came out on the short end of an 8-0 and 4-2 doubleheader loss Saturday before getting blanked 10-zip Sunday.

The opening game of the weekend was dominated by hard throwing National righthander Jim Jungbauer.

The former Carthage College closer took a perfect game into the 6th inning, before losing it when Mitch Kushava reached on an error. Jungbauer would later lose his no-hit bid in the 7th when Adam Francour lined a shot off the pitcher’s leg for a single.

Jungbauer finished with 9 strikeouts in the impressive 7-inning victory.

Game two saw the Redbirds own a 7-4 hitting edge, but came up short on the scoreboard 4-2. Southpaw Aaron Woods threw 126 pitches, including 83 in the first 3 innings in his first mound start. He walked 7 and fanned 12 while giving up 2 earned runs.

West Allis scored twice in the first and second frames on a RBI single by Matt Richer and two-run single by Curt Pryal.

Marinette waited until the third inning to register their lone runs of the weekend. Player/coach Nick Brukardt walked, Cullie Falkenberg was beaned, Todd Olsen laid down a bunt before Cody Bezio lashed a run scoring single. Falkenberg would later cross the plate on the front end of a double steal.

Sunday’s single game also went to the Nationals 10-0. Kushava started for the Redbirds with relief help from Chad Rasmussen as the duo was battered for 12 hits.

Jordan Rasner punched out 2 of Marinette’s 6 hits.

The Redbirds will host a 3-team Memorial weekend tournament as Crivitz takes on Menominee at noon Saturday followed by Marinette and Crivitz at 2:30pm. There will only be one game on Sunday at noon with Marinette meeting Menominee.

Crivitz Clips Kingsford

In Extra Innings 10-9

In a high scoring Wishigan League opener Sunday, Crivitz (1-1) made the most of 17 hits and 6 errors to slip past Kingsford in 10 innings 10-9.

Veteran southpaw Jeff Baumann fanned 13, walked 4, gave up 6 hits and 9 runs while hurling all 10 innings for the win. Three Crivitz errors resulted in 4 unearned runs.

Crivitz scored 3 runs in the third inning on a home run by Jake Johnston, plating Kyle Johnston and Dan Poh.

In the fourth frame, Geoff Sparks singled in Jordan Hardy and Kyle Johnston added a sac fly.

Poh single sent Hardy home in the fifth while Baumann and Sparks raced home on a single off the bat of Kyle Johnston to tie in the 9th inning.

Trailing 9-8 heading into the bottom of the 10th, Crivitz put together their winning rally as Scott Wolf scored on a single by Hardy while Jake Johnston crossed the plate with the winning run on a sac fly from Dylan Hanson.

Rich Anderson took the loss yielding 4 runs (3 earned) on 6 hits with 5 strikeouts and 3 walks over 5 innings.
