Letter to Editor:

I have to respond again to the news that was reported about the Town of Athelstane meeting in May. I don’t feel the whole reason I brought up the sheriff’s report was told properly. I was told by many people about who and why the sheriff was called after I read a letter at a town meeting. I am one who has the facts before I state my case.

Imagine my surprise when I received the police report and found out that Harold Tesch, Jr. is the one who called Judge Medrow and told him one thing (which never happened) and then when the Marinette County Sheriff went to talk with Harold, he told the sheriff another story.

My question at the meeting was who did Harold Tesch, Jr. lie to, the judge or the sheriff? I never did get an answer. (They did report in the Peshtigo Times that rumor has it that Harold Tesch, Jr. is running for office. Guess that was more newsworthy.)

All I heard out of the back was WE HAVE MORE IMPORTANT ISSUES TO DISCUSS. Well, I am sorry but these town meetings are where the taxpayers voice their concerns and issues. We all have the right to get the answers to our questions. Not just a select few.

In response to me getting signatures, yes I did after I heard how past boards were spending tens of thousands of our tax dollars for health benefits for two town employees.

Fact: 2008 - $27,728.47, two employees; 2009 - $26,241.92, two employees; 2010 - $29,780.94, two employees; 2011 - $34,641.62 - two employees.

TOTAL spent for four years of OUR TAX DOLLARS was $118,392.95 for two, yes I said two, town employees. Chairman Wutkowski found these figures and he and Mr. Meetz put a cap on the amount the town would pay.

Another issue, I put a sign in front of my house to re-elect Wutkowski and Meetz (which is my right) and Sunday morning I had Greg Reinhardt, town treasurer, out in front of my home for five minutes videotaping the sign. Yes, I checked the time. Intimidation? Maybe in his mind.

I told many of you that I will fight for all of you who believe as I do that something has to change and we should not feel afraid to say anything that we want to know. We also should not feel that if we voice our opinion that someone will retaliate against us. We have a right to know where our tax money is going and what is going on in town.

Why mention was made that I am on the Planning Commission and on the Election Board I don’t know, but in my defense, I trained for the Election Board and I do it well. I don’t voice my opinions one way or the other while voting is taking place (unlike the person I witnessed calling a voter outside to talk to him and then had him sign the recall for Chuck and Harry - you know who you are).

And as for being on the Planning Commission, I went to my first meeting in May. Good thing I was given the position. I found a state statute in one of the ordinances that didn’t even exist and also the former chairman of the Planning Commission gave the members a disc with all the ordinances on it. Imagine the surprise when I put in the disc and there was only a copy of a permit to construct and a typical half-section map. No ordinances. No wonder the ordinances are being revised and amended. I say let’s do the homework and get it right the first time.

Last but not least, there are some vindictive people out there and the foolishness needs to stop. You are now messing with people’s lives. There have been tires punctured, nails thrown in a driveway, nasty letters about people’s lifestyle and past, certain mailboxes run down, and a few days ago Mr. Meetz found out the hard way that all of his lug nuts were loose. He could have been killed. I hope whoever is doing all of this is caught by the sheriff and rots in jail.

There is no room in Athelstane for all this craziness. There are so many lies going around town it is foolish. Let’s start getting all the facts when we request them. We have to remember that anything that involves this town involves us. We need to work together to take our town back and keep taxes down. We also need to be informed of what is going on in this town without resistance.

All these things are facts, not bar room talk or gossip. If anyone would like a copy of the figures I mentioned or the police report, give me a call. I will be happy to get them to you. As I said, I get the facts before I open my mouth.

Harriet Ivanis

To the Editor:

The Veteran

He stands alone outside the crowd,

A little bent, yet strong and proud.

His steps have slowed, his hair is gray,

His thoughts are of a bygone day.

Recalling times of standing ground,

of conquered fears and courage found.

Of comrades lost on land and sea,

Who fought to keep our country free.

Now as they play those lonely taps,

Within his ranks are many gaps.

The price was paid, some gave their all

And now live only on the Wall.

And so Old Glory proudly flies,

And we observe his tear-filled eyes.

His day is done — the sun has set;

He only prays we won’t forget.

Dear Editor:

Although you will be reading this after Memorial Day 2012. It surprises me your poll showed that people in Peshtigo and the surrounding area were so negative about attending a Memorial Day observance.

I grew up in Peshtigo during the Second World War and the Korean War. (The people voting should know about the men and woman who served in the wars that followed).

My point being, Peshtigo truly honored the men during the time I grew up there. I followed the parade down the streets of Peshtigo along with many other young people and adults as well as Veterans. We would gather around the the statue of the Doughboy at the cemetery and listen to the patriotic speeches.

I became a Marine in 1954 and proud of it. So I was a little dismayed at the results of your poll. Peshtigo and the cities around it are better than that.

I voted in the Times poll. I guess you can figure out what I am doing on Memorial Day.

GOD BLESS AMERICA

Terry Barrett,

Wrightwood, Ca.
