Coleman, Crivitz, Peshtigo And Wausaukee Advance

Tuesday might have been one of the finest moments for M-O Conference baseball teams as four moved into the WIAA regional finals with victories.

Crivitz and Peshtigo pulled out big road wins to face each other in the Division 3 title game. Crivitz (8-13) surprised top seed Oconto 6-5 while Peshtigo (8-14) went 11 innings before handing Crandon (13-8) a 6-5 setback.

Peshtigo, which has defeated Crivitz twice this season, will host the Wolverines at 4:30pm Wednesday (May 30) with the winner advancing to the sectional at Stevens Point Pacelli on Tuesday, June 5.

Things were more normal in the Division 4 field as top seeds Coleman and Wausaukee won in convincing style.

Coleman (23-1) and owner of a 23-game winning streak, saw a trio of hurlers combine to toss a no-hitter in a 13-0 win over Marion. The Cougars will entertain second seed Bowler, an 18-1 victor over Tigerton on Wednesday, May 30 at 5pm.

The Wausaukee Rangers (19-3) had no trouble with visiting Elcho 13-0 and now host Florence at 4:30pm Wednesday in the finals. Florence outslugged Goodman-Pembine 23-13 in 6 innings.

If Coleman and Wausaukee both win, they would face each other in the D-4 sectional semifinals at 1:30pm on Tuesday, June 5 in Rosholt. The sectional finals are slated later that day at 4:30pm.

Peshtigo Pulls Out

11 Inning Thriller 7-4

The Bulldogs needed 4 extra innings before claiming a hard earned 7-4 road win over Crandon Tuesday. The marathon game overcame a short rain delay and showcased some great pitching by Jordan Berth and Zach Neumann to the tune of 22 strikeouts in the post-season clash.

“We got some great pitching from Jordan and Zach while Nick Sparks had a huge RBI single in the top of the 11th. It was a long night as we got home around 10:45pm,” Robbins said.

Berth started for the Bulldogs giving up 4 runs and 4 hits over 4 1/3 innings. Neumann was pretty much “lights out” hurling 5 2/3 shutout innings and one hit ball while fanning 14.

Peshtigo needed two batters to take a 1-0 first inning lead as Joey Sparks singled and scored on a double by Trevor Bero. In the fourth frame back-to-back doubles by Brendon Thomas and Tom Quigley tied the score at 2-2 before Peshtigo added two tallies in the fifth. An error allowed Cody Nielson to reach and later score following bunts by Derek Koronkiewicz and Thomas.

After Crandon knotted things up in the fifth, Peshtigo waited until the 11th to push across its winning runs. Joey Sparks drew a leadoff walk and Bero bunted him to second. Nick Sparks followed with a RBI single for a 5-4 edge. Nielson and Neumann kept the inning alive with a run scoring double and single.

Protecting that cushion, Neumann used a groundout and two strikeouts to put Crandon down in order in the bottom of the 11th.

Crivitz Stuns Top

Seed Oconto 6-5

In one of the biggest upsets of the tournament, number 4 seed Crivitz topped top seed Oconto 6-5 Tuesday.

The Wolverines built up a 5-2 lead after two innings then pushed across the game winner in the 6th.

Cody Wolf picked up the mound win allowing 5 runs on 5 hits with 4 walks and one strikeout in a complete game performance.

Tyler Trepanier started for Oconto (13-7) before being relieved by Austin Young.

A two-run single by Tyler Osmanski gave Crivitz a 3-0 first inning edge before adding two more tallies in the second for a 5-2 lead. Wolf doubled, Parker DeLosSantos ripped a RBI single and Jake Sawinski a sac fly.

The final Crivitz run was scored in the 6th as AJ Garcia lashed a double to send DeLosSantos home.

Coleman Uses No-Hitter

To Rout Marion 13-Zip

Three pitchers combined their talents to toss a no-hitter as Coleman opened the tournament with a 13-0 home win over Marion. Derek Marquardt worked 3 innings and fanned 5 while Mitch Mergener and Trevor Bushmaker added one inning of mound work each.

The Cougars battered a trio of hurlers for 12 hits, including two each by Mitch Champagne, Mason Mergener, winning pitcher Marquardt and Lucas Markiewicz.

“It was a good game for us....pitchers did another nice job getting ahead of the batters and throwing that no-hitter. Meanwhile the bats got going early and it helped a lot,” Casper said.

Coleman scored 4 times in the opening inning, highlighted by a three-run homer off the bat of Marquardt. The first 4 Cougars in the batting order reached base as Champagne, Mike and Mason Mergener and Engels all singled.

The Cougars sent 14 batters to the plate and scored 8 runs in the third frame to build up a 12-0 spread. Champagne, Mason Mergener, Marquardt, Markiewicz and Bushmaker slapped out safeties.

Wausaukee Whips

Elcho 13-0 In D-4

The Rangers had no trouble taking care of their opening tournament opponent, pounding Elcho 13-0 in 5 innings.

The mound duo of junior southpaw Cole Lewandowski and sophomore righthander Aaron Schlies limited the Hornets to just one hit while striking out 9. The lone safety came on a third inning single by Clayton Grose.

Wausaukee made the most of 7 hits and 8 walks to push across their 13 runs. Austin Carter punched out 2 hits, scored twice and drove in 4 runs while Brett Edlbeck and Beau DeLaet crossed the plate twice each.

Starting early, the Rangers struck for 6 runs in the opening frame on 4 hits, 3 walks and 2 errors. Edlbeck opened with a walk, stole second and raced home as DeLaet lashed a RBI double. Lewandowski followed with a single, Carter ripped a RBI double and Joe Jaworski added a run scoring single.

Wausaukee tacked on 4 more runs in the third inning on one hit, 2 walks and 2 errors. Jaworski and Edlbeck walked, DeLaet got aboard on an error, Lewandowski whiffed before Carter unloaded a two-run single.

Three more walks, a hit batsman and single by Lewandowski padded the cushion to 13-0 in the fourth inning.

Lewandowski worked 2 1/3 innings allowing one hit and 4 walks while Schlies picked up the win with 7 strikeouts and no hits over the final 2 2/3 frames.

Patriots Fall

To Florence

In a high scoring semifinal at Florence, the host Bobcats topped Goodman-Pembine 23-13.

Jeremy Streu paced Florence with 4 hits and 7 RBIs while winning pitcher Louie Garcia drove in 4 runs.

Titans Fall To

Tigerton 16-4

Tigerton started early and never let up in hammering Lena-STAA 16-4 in the tournament opener Thursday. The winners owned a 5-0 lead after the first frame, 8-1 second and 16-1 in the third.

Losing pitcher Kiefer Powers was rocked for all 16 runs (9 earned) on 9 hits with 8 walks and one strikeout over 2 1/3 innings.

Josh Silverton and Tyler Marquardt collected 2 hits each for the winners.

The Titans managed 4 hits in the game, singles by Alex Votava, Evan Beranek, Dean Jopek and Justin Miller.

Patriots Pound

Phelps 15-Zip

The Goodman-Pembine Patriots scored 6 runs in the first inning and 7 in the second to cruise to a 15-0 tournament opening win over Phelps Friday.

Brody Millan punched out 3 hits and collected 3 RBIs while Craig Kowalkowski and Trent Heath lashed two safeties each.

Freshman Randall Bose was the winning pitcher yielding one hit over 4 innings before Heath got the call for the final 3 outs.
