Erin Perkins And Valind Qualify In 2 Events; Preston Perkins Top Pole Vault Seed Sparked by double qualifiers Erin Perkins and Dustin Valind, the Marinette Marines will pace the Division 2 track contingent to the state meet in LaCrosse, which starts on Friday.
Perkins scored all the points for the Marinette girls with a first place time in the 100 hurdles and a runner-up leap in the long jump.
She will have plenty of company wearing purple and white at the meet as the boys earned berths in six events. Strongman Valind won the shot put and tallied a second place finish in the discus, while Preston Perkins, older brother of Erin, sailed 14-feet to claim the pole vault sectional title.
The Peshtigo Bulldogs are sending two athletes to the state meet. Sophomore high jumper Nicole Motkowski set a conference record with a 5’4 effort while junior sprinter Brad Neumann notched the silver medal in the 100 meters.
Two Oconto County athletes punched their state tickets with sectional victories. Oconto hurdler Kathryn Croney cruised to the 300 honors in 46.46 while Oconto Falls senior Weston Brusky was first in the 1600 and second in the 3200 run.
The top 4 place finishers in each event qualified for the state meet.

Peshtigo Two
Registering a trio of first place finishes, Marinette notched a 16th place total in the girls division and 4th in the boys at the Division 2 sectional held at Little Chute Thursday.
The Marinette girls got their points from talented sophomore Erin Perkins, who finished first in the 100 hurdles at 15.96, second in the long jump with a personal best 17’2.75 and a fifth place leap in the triple jump at 34’9.5.
Peshtigo, which shared 20th place overall, saw sophomore Nicole Motkowski come up with another clutch performance, tying the conference high jump record at 5’4.
The leap enabled Motkowski to move into the elite class of M-O jumpers Debbie Quandt (1987) and Cindy Gauthier (1989) of Suring along with Rebecca Sager of Coleman (1998).
“Nicole did a great job and tied the conference record with her effort,” Peshtigo coach Rick Neumann said.
The Bulldogs watched senior distance runner Jenny Metzler end her prep career with a 7th place time in the 3200 meter run (12:17.51) while the 800 meter relay team claimed 14th at 1:58.42.
Oconto’s Kathryn Croney copped the 300 hurdles in 46.46 and third in the 100 hurdles (16.36), Emily Gibson-Treptow 9th high jump, Tori Hipke 12th 400 and the 1600 relay was 13th.
Oconto Falls saw Leah Kasten finish 5th in the pole vault (9’3), Jenny Spang 6th in the 200 (28.82), Kayla Virtues 7th shot put, Deanna Cahoon-Draus 9th 3200 (12:35.99) and the 400 relay 10th.
In the boys portion of the meet, Marinette qualified for state in six events. Valind, who has dominated the weights from the opening meet, won the shot put with a throw of 52’9 and came up with a second place mark in the discus at 167’2.
Marinette also got a first place performance from pole vaulter Preston Perkins, who cleared 14’ on the windy day with teammate Jaden Boivin also earned a state trip with a 4th place effort of 12’6.
Isaac Mansur was the runner-up in the high jump with a personal best leap of 6’4 leap and the 400 relay team posted a third place clocking of 44.21. Members of the fast stepping foursome are Boivin, Zach Campbell, Ian Greenlund and Dakota Vanidestine.
The Marines got more points from Landon Derginer, who finished 6th in the triple jump at 41’9.
The Peshtigo boys could only get one member to state as junior sprinter Brad Neumann was runner-up in the 100 meter dash at 11.40. Looking to add the 200 to his state itinerary, Neumann false started and was disqualified.
“None of the running times were exceptional as they went into a strong wind. Brad ran hard in the 100, but false started in the 200,” Neumann added.
The 3200 relay crew of Brandon Barrette, Aaron Bhatoya, Colin Hass and Tony Nesberg put together a 8:34.35 clocking for 6th place. Zach Neumann copped a 6th place in the shot put (48’4), Levi Sanborn 9th in the long jump (19’3), 10th in the 110 hurdles and Aaron Bhatoya 11th in the 800 (2:07.47).
Oconto Falls senior Weston Brusky continues to put the finishing touches on a stellar career with a winning time of 4:39.73 in the 1600 meter run and second place in the 3200 at 10:04.47.
Other places for the Panthers included Christian Herbeck 5th in the discus (159’5) and the 1600 relay team of Alec Bramschreiber, Hunter Reed, Alex Young and Tyler Coopman 8th (3:34.62).
