Defeat Oconto Falls And Peshtigo For 2-3 Readout

Opening the season with a five-game homestand, the Marinette Legion gang notched a pair of wins.

The good news saw Marinette slip past Oconto Falls 4-3 Friday and Peshtigo 10-0 Tuesday to get things rolling to the 2012 campaign.

Sandwiched between the victories were a trio of losses...2-1 heartbreaker to Green Bay Southwest Saturday along with a doubleheader setback at the hands of Wausau Sunday 6-1 and 3-2.

Looking ahead to this week, Marinette will continue their busy slate with 4 games in 3 days at the annual Green Bay Southwest Father’s Day tournament.

Marinette will return to the confines of Pedersen Park on Tuesday, June 19 hosting White Lake and Wednesday, June 20 against Oconto.

Both games will begin at 7:30pm.

Marinette Edges

Oconto Falls 4-3

Marinette made the most of 7 hits to back the stingy pitching of Luke Kelly in a 4-3 season opening win over Oconto Falls Friday.

Kelly was nicked for 4 hits and 3 runs (one earned) in his 7-inning complete game effort.

Opposing Kelly on the mound was hard throwing Mike Nompleggi, who was the Bay Conference’s player of the year. Nompleggi fanned 9, walked 5 and hit two batters during a 132 pitch performance.

Oconto Falls grabbed a 1-0 first inning lead when John Thompson singled and scored the first of his 3 runs. A sac bunt and an error allowed Thompson to circle the bases.

Marinette got even in its half of the first when Aaron Pettit was beaned to start the game and scooted home on a double to rightcenter field by Scott Eldredge.

Thompson singled and scored on a base knock by Jacob Mogged in the third for a 2-1 lead before Marinette answered in the bottom half of the frame.

Derek Klegin and Pettit singled to open the inning and Eldredge laid down a bunt. A walk to Heath Rowe and two wild pitches plated the runs for a 3-2 edge.

Thompson and Cory Nielson reached on errors to begin the fifth inning while Mogged added a single to knot the score at 3-all.

It looked like Oconto Falls was in line for a huge rally, that is until Marinette turned a triple play to end the inning.

With runners at first and second, cleanup swinger Tyler Magnin popped up a bunt which was caught by a diving Kelly. While laying on the ground, Kelly fired to Klegin at second base for the second out, who threw to first to complete the triple play.

Marinette pushed across its winning run in the fifth as Austin Belonga lashed a one-out single, moved to second on a wild pitch before scoring on Jake McMahon’s single.

Despite committing 5 errors, the Marinette defense ended the game on a bright note with a 5-4-3 double play.

Legion Nipped By

Southwest 2-1

With both pitchers tossing nifty 3-hitters, Marinette fell to visiting Southwest Saturday 2-1.

Austin Belonga was the tough luck losing hurler, giving up 2 runs on 3 hits with 4 strikeouts and 2 walks.

His mound foe, Matt Freeman, set down 7 batters on strikes while allowing 3 walks.

With both offenses being kept in check through 5 innings, Marinette finally broke the scoreless streak in the sixth. Eldredge reached on an error, stole second and eventually raced home on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.

That cushion lasted until the 7th when Southwest pushed across two runs. Bob LeMieux was hit by a pitch to start the frame and moved to second base on a bunt by Jamie Schultz. LeMieux didn’t have to wait long to score as the next hitter, Mason Johanek, launched a two-run homer over the leftfield fence.

Marinette tried to rally in its half of the 7th as Ty Bebo lashed a two-out single, but never advanced.

Marinette Totals 3 Hits

In Doubleheader Loss

With their bats going silent again, Marinette totaled 3 hits in suffering a 6-1 and 3-2 doubleheader loss to visiting Wausau Sunday.

In the opener, Wausau turned 8 hits and 7 walks into a 6-1 victory. Justin Duffy, Chris Clementi and winning pitcher Scott Kieper collected two hits each.

Losing pitcher Jake McMahon walked 6 and fanned 4 over 5 innings before giving way to Max Hipke for the final two frames.

Marinette managed a third inning double by Heath Rowe and a 5th inning single from Scott Eldredge.

Game two was more of the same as Marinette registered one hit, a third inning infield single by Nate Kallestad, in suffering a 3-2 loss.

Marinette took a 2-0 third inning lead as Kallestad beat out a slow roller, Hipke walked and Trent Mehlberg reached first when his sacrifice bunt was misplayed. Pettit was beaned to send the first run home before Derek Klegin hit a sac fly to left for a 2-0 spread. A walk to Rowe followed by a strikeout and flyout ended the rally.

Wausau closed the gap to 2-1 in the fourth when Ryan Zweck singled and raced home on a double by starting pitcher Walter Grau.

Clementi doubled and scored on a groundout by Duffy in the fifth inning for a 2-2 deadlock.

Wausau pushed across its winning run in the sixth on a Dylan Dalert double to start the inning and a squeeze bunt by Nick Stibbe.

On the play, losing pitcher Ty Bebo fielded the ball in plenty of time, only to throw high and wide past catcher Austin Belonga.

After getting Belonga and Kallestad on base with walks in the sixth, Marinette saw the inning end on a flyout to center by Hipke.

Marinette’s final 3 outs of the game came on grounders to third base.

Bebo was tagged with the loss, yielding 3 runs on 6 hits with 3 walks and 3 strikeouts.

Brad Knoblock earned the win with 4 2/3 innings in relief of starter Grau.

Bats Come Alive In 10-0

Win Over Peshtigo Tues.

Taking on a Peshtigo squad that was facing pre-game tragedy, Marinette scored 8 runs in the fourth inning to win 10-zip.

Playing the game was secondary to Peshtigo, which learned about the death of a former teammate prior to the start.

In the end, Peshtigo voted to play and did....with a heavy heart.

When the game was played, Marinette put together their best offensive output to date, punching out 10 hits in a 10-0, 5 inning win.

Eldredge and Belonga socked out three hits each while Luke Kelly added two hits and 2 RBIs. Eldredge lashed a pair of doubles, scored twice and drove in two runs.

Peshtigo managed just 3 hits off winning pitcher Derek Klegin...singles by Tyler Marquardt in the first frame along with hits from Brandon Barrette and DJ Koronkiewicz in the fifth.

Eldredge doubled and scored on a single by Belonga in the opening inning as Marinette protected that slim lead until breaking the game open in the fourth.

Sending 13 batters to the plate, Marinette erupted for 8 runs on 3 hits with 7 walks and a hit batsman. Eldredge doubled in the inning while Kelly and Belonga added singles.

Taking a 9-0 lead into the fifth, Marinette strung singles together by Aaron Pettit, Eldredge and Belonga to end the game.

Adam Thill worked 3 2/3 innings for Peshtigo before giving way to Jordan Berth. The pair walked 8 and registered 3 strikeouts.
