Coleman's Title Reign On The Line

It’s just the second week of M-O Conference play and league honors are already up for grabs. Friday night the top two powers in the circuit will collide when Peshtigo travels to Coleman for an early season showdown at 7pm.

Peshtigo (2-0, 1-0) is looking to unseat the two-time defending conference champion Cougars, who stretched their three-year winning streak to 15 games with a 62-7 whipping of Gillett in the M-O opener Friday. Coach Sam Komp’s Bulldogs also cruised, battering Lena-STAA 55-6.

This pivotal showdown will allow the victor to take a huge step towards the conference title. Coleman has won 3 of the last 4 league titles with Peshtigo finishing on top 3 times since 2005. The Bulldogs last conference championship came in 2009 with a 7-0 league mark.

“Winning the first conference game is nice, but there is a lot of the season left and we have a good test in front of us with Peshtigo. They will be the most physical team we have seen so far. Game is shaping up to which line can out-will their opponent,” Coleman boss Jeff Bronson said.

Looking ahead to that showdown with Coleman, coach Komp said... “In order to be successful against them, we have to be on the top of our game. Coleman is the defending conference champion, really quick off the ball and hustle on defense. I still believe they are the team to beat...game is at their place which should be an advantage for them. It will be a good test for our kids.”

In other league action, Suring used a last second touchdown pass from Jay Tienor to Cody Christensen to knock off Crivitz 37-34 in a high scoring affair.

Tienor and Crivitz halfback Ben Fischer stole the show with outstanding performances.Tienor tallied 309 total yards and had a hand in all 5 Suring scores while Fischer rushed for 241 yards and 3 touchdowns.

The Wausaukee Rangers continue to search for their first win of the season after dropping a 30-12 crossover clash at Florence.

Coleman Runs Over

Gillett In Opener 62-7

Picking up right where they left off last season, the Cougars clobbered host Gillett Friday night 62-7. Coleman started early and never let up, building a 48-0 halftime cushion for their 15th straight league win.

“We did what we needed to do...controlled the clock and won the turnover battle,” Bronson remarked. “Regardless of the score, Gillett made us work and for this team, Gillett also helped show some areas offensively we need to clean up. We had too many assignment errors and through film work and practice we will work on fixing them.”

Continuing their dominance on the ground, Coleman rushed for 373 of their 452 total yards and 7 touchdowns. Dexter Karban paced the runners with 89 yards in 15 carries, Marc Lansin 6-77, Mason Mergener 9-79 and Mike Carroll 3-63.

Quarterback Trevor Seewald threw for 79 yards and two touchdowns while also finding the comforts of the end zone on runs of 25, 2 and one yard.

“In terms of the game itself, anytime you get all the players in it is a good night. We had contributions from just about every back so the line had to do their job as well. Probably the best thing that came out of the game was the balance of yards for the ball carriers. Dexter, Mason, Marc and Mike each had big plays and similar yardage. If we can continue that type of balance-and get better at some areas-the chance for success will increase,” Bronson added.

A young Gillett team didn’t muster up much offense with 120 yards over 41 plays. Sophomore signal caller Evan Bubolz connected on 8 of 24 throws for 108 yards. The lone touchdown came in the fourth quarter on a 3 yard run by Matt Peterson.

“Tough game for us, overpowered and overmatched by the Cougars. Helps to have a program with a tradition, kids expect to win there-that is something we are trying to establish and build in Gillett,” Tiger coach Rick Kamps said.

Coleman reached the end zone on all 7 possessions in the first half.

Sophomore back Marc Lansin got the scoring started with a 64 yard run on Coleman’s third play of the game. Drive number two covered 30 yards in two plays as Trevor Seewald ran an option to the end zone from 25 yards out (8:30) for a 12-0 spread.

Defensive back Austin Malecki set up the third score by grabbing a fumble in the air and racing 20 yards to the Gillett 7. Three plays later Seewald hooked up with 6’3 tight end CJ Pillath for the points and an 18-0 lead.

Forcing Gillett into the third punt of the opening quarter, Coleman put together a 6 play/41 yard scoring drive. Mason Mergener peeled off 21 yards on third down to the 18 before Seewald scooted in from 2 yards out (1:20). Seewald and Mike Carroll teamed up on the conversion pass for a 26-0 edge.

Coleman made its way to the end zone three more times in the second frame to build up a comfortable 48-0 cushion.

Carroll capped a 5 play, 64 yard drive with a 46 yard scoring jaunt at the 9:35 mark. Lansin tacked on the conversion run to go up 34-zip.

Starting at their own 14, Coleman moved 86 yards in 4 plays for a 42-0 lead. The key play saw Seewald role right and flick a 72 yard scoring toss to Carroll while Malecki hauled in the conversion pass.

Getting the ball back right before the half, Coleman pushed the upper hand to 48-0 when Mergener jogged in untouched from 3 yards out. The conversion pass failed.

With the outcome already decided, Coleman tacked on a pair of third quarter teedees. Seewald found the end zone for the third time on a one yard sneak while freshman Jody Styczynski bolted in from 5 yards out and a 62-0 lead.

Gillett made its way to the end zone with 25 seconds left when Matt Peterson scored from 3 yards out.

Tienor, Suring Rally

Past Crivitz 37-34

In the wildest conference outing of the week, Suring put together a miraculous rally to claim a thrilling 37-34 win over host Crivitz Thursday night.

Down 34-30 with 33 seconds left, the Eagles drove 72 yards in 3 plays as quarterback Jay Tienor lofted an “alley-oop” pass to Cody Christensen for the final 6 yards and the win.

“Tienor was really composed down the stretch. We had 3 timeouts left and moved 72 yards in 33 seconds, which is really good for a high school team. Because of the timeouts, we were able to work the middle of the field. The big play was that catch and run by Kempen, where he broke 4 tackles and put the ball at the 6,” Suring coach Mitch Taylor said.

The contest pitted two of the more talented football players in the M-O...Tienor and Crivitz junior halfback Ben Fischer.

Tienor had a huge game. Not only did he engineer that game-winning rally, the senior southpaw had a hand in all 5 Suring scores and was their leading rusher and passer.

Tienor accounted for 309 of Suring’s 392 total yards....49 rushing on 14 carries and 260 through the air on 16 of 27 attempts.

While Tienor shouldered the offensive load for the Eagles, Fischer was a one-man offense. And as Fischer went, so did the Crivitz success. Unfortunately for the Wolverines, Fischer missed most of the second half with muscle cramps.

The 6’2, 195 pounder battered the Suring defense for 201 of his 241 yards and 3 touchdowns in the first half. The effort sparked the ball- control Crivitz attack to a 27-14 halftime edge. The second half proved to be a different story. Sitting on the sidelines for 15 of the 24 minutes over the final two frames while trying to work out cramps, Fischer was limited to 8 carries for 41 yards and a score.

With Fischer gone, Suring played most of the half on the Wolverines side of the 50 and put together a 23-7 scoring edge to rally for the win.

“We just ran out of gas at the end. When Fischer was out with cramps, our offense never got it done...need to find other options. I think the kids got their chins down and it hurt us on both sides of the ball. He is our middle linebacker and when Suring went to the spread, he would drop back in coverage. Without him, Suring took advantage of some openings,” Crivitz coach Jeff Out said.

Crivitz and Fischer dominated the first half to the tune of a 27-14 lead. The hard running Wolverine made his way to the end zone on scampers of 63 and 5 yards in the first quarter for a 13-0 lead. Period two saw Fischer scoot in from 10 yards and quarterback AK Garcia 8 yards out.

While Fischer gave Crivitz the upper hand early, Tienor operated out of the spread formation and kept Suring close with second quarter scoring runs of 10 and 6 yards. The latter coming with 3:48 left in the half and featured a 30 yard pass to Dan Swede to the 10. Three plays later Tienor scored from 4 yards out and hit Christensen on conversion toss (3:48).

There was still enough time left on the clock for Crivitz to march 65 yards to the end zone. The Wolverines needed 7 plays to produce points, highlighted by consecutive runs of 20 and 24 yards by Fischer to the 8. Garcia took it from there finding the comforts of the end zone on an option play with 1:59 left. Fischer added the two point run for a 27-14 cushion.

Facing that 13 point deficit, Suring stormed backed over the final two periods with a 23-7 scoring edge. Taking the opening kickoff, the Eagles drove 56 yards in 10 plays. A 10 yard reverse run by Christensen followed by a 14 yard pass to Dillon Kempen gave Suring a first down at the one. Tienor capped the drive with a one yard sneak (8:50).

With the lead trimmed to 7 points, Crivitz ran into more trouble on its next possession as Fischer had one carry before leaving because of leg cramps. It would be a big hole to try and fill.

After an exchange of punts, Suring pinned the Wolverines at their 8. Things were about to get worse. Jed Nelson went nowhere on first down while Garcia was chased out the pocket, pressured and penalized for intentional grounding in the end zone. The end result was a safety and a 27-22 score (3:04).

Sparked by another defensive stand, Suring took over at the Crivitz 48 and used 7 plays to take the lead. Kempen hauled in a 17 yard strike while Tienor picked up 6 yards on fourth down to move the chains. On the very next play Dan Swede snagged a swing pass and wiggled his way into the end zone from 17 yards out (10:02). Tienor and Swede hooked up on the conversion for a 30-27 lead.

Fischer finally made his way back on the field with 5:31 remaining. Following a pair of runs, the cramps returned and Fischer was back on the sideline.

Crivitz still managed to continue its march goalward. A third down pass interference penalty gave the Wolverines a new start at midfield. With the Suring defense lining up 11 strong in the box, Garcia lost 15 yards on the next play before hitting DeLosSantos for 31 yards to the Suring 24.

Fischer returned as Crivitz slowly moved goalward where Garcia and DeLosSantos hooked up for a gain to the 18. With time ticking away the ball went to Fischer, who plowed forward for a first down at the 12. Riding their workhorse, Crivitz called Fischer’s number again on the next play for the score. Joe Rodriquez booted the extra point for a 33-30 lead with 33 seconds left.

The teedee gave Crivitz the lead, momentum and it seemed like the win.

That is until Tienor and his mates got their hands on the ball. Starting at their own 28, Suring moved 72 yards in 3 plays before scoring with :03 left.

With those 3 timeouts remaining, Tienor and Kempen connected for 18 yards on first down to the 46 followed by a 48 yard pass to the Crivitz 6. Kempen hauled in a 15 yard catch, broke numerous tackles and nearly raced to the end zone before getting brought down by Jake Sawinski.

With :08 showing on the clock, the Eagles isolated the 6’2 Christensen on the right side against Crivitz defensive back Cody Wolf (5’7).

Tienor hurled a perfect pass which Christensen brought down in the back of the end zone for the win. Blake Strehlow booted the point after for a 37-34 lead with 3 seconds and a kickoff remaining.

Unleashing a squib kick, the Crivitz front row blockers tried to run with the ball but were tackled as the final gun sounded.

“Early on we had our hands full with Fischer...with him out because of cramps, Crivitz was a different team,” Taylor added. “We are a senior dominated team and Kempen acts like a senior at times, so the kids knew how to keep their cool at the end. It was a good game and we are very happy to have won.”

From the Crivitz sideline, coach Out remarked... “that was a perfect throw by Tienor, who is a very good athlete that had a great game with 260 yards passing. We couldn’t stop the pass and had no answer when they went to the spread, plus they had good athletes on the outside in Christensen and Swede. Our kids played hard but we are thin with the number of kids we can actually play.”

Rangers Roughed Up

In Crossover Clash

With Florence 30-12

The Rangers started the fourth quarter of Thursday’s crossover game with a goose egg on the scoreboard and staring up at Florence’s 14 point lead.

Wausaukee managed to score a pair of touchdowns in that closing quarter but it wasn’t enough as the Bobcats added 16 to their two-touchdown edge and went on to defeat the Rangers 30-12.

Florence relied on its running game to pick up this win as Cole Dollar carried the ball 14 times for 70 yards and a score, Josh Siebold had a score on five carries for 40 yards and Morgan Counter had 11 yards and a score on the ground. Quarterback Louie Garcia racked up 133 yards on 19 for 10 passing with a touchdown and an interception while also rushing the ball for 69 yards and a score.

For the Rangers, reserve quarterbacks Aaron Schlies was 7 for 21 with 115 yards and a pair of touchdowns while starter Beau DeLaet hit on four of five attempts for 93 yards before leaving with a hand injury. Ryan Nystrom had a banner night for the Wausaukee receivers as he picked up 163 yards on seven catches and a touchdown while teammate caught one pass for eight yards and a score.
