Offense Erupts For 400 Yards As Maroons Roll To 47-6 Win

With the offense erupting for 400 yards, the Menominee Maroons opened up Great Northern Conference play Friday night with a 47-6 whipping of visiting Gladstone. The lopsided win improves the Maroons to 4-0 under rookie coach Joe Noha, who took over for the legendary Ken Hofer.

The Maroons relied on their bread and butter ground attack to batter Gladstone for 298 yards on 43 rushes and an impressive 6.9 average. Just to keep the Gladstone defense honest, Menominee added 102 yards passing to cap the conference rout.

“This was really unexpected as Gladstone’s pedigree is to bring physical play. Our kids matched their play and found ways to get to the end zone,” Noha said. “Rushing the ball and controlling the line of scrimmage is one of our weekly goals and to get nearly 300 yards demonstrates this.”

James Brown paced the Maroon ground attack with 20 rushes for 128 yards and three scores, Justin Brilinski added 10-71 and two teedees, tailback Sam Schewe 11-45, Bryan Hines 1-37 and Jared Rivard 1-18.

Schewe connected on 9 of 13 passes for 95 yards, including a pair of teedee tosses to Devon Harris from 24 and 7 yards. Rivard and Harris snagged 4 balls each while Hines grabbed two for 17 yards.

While the Maroon offense gets most of the credit, the defense held Gladstone to 201 yards, one touchdown and forced 5 turnovers. Four of those miscues came on aerial thefts by Hines, Harris, Brilinski and Ryne Francour.

Menominee scored 20 points in the first half then added 21 more in period two to take control of the game.

Brown blasted over from a yard out at the 8:03 mark to cap Menominee’s opening drive. Evan Pohlman booted the first of 5 PAT’s for a 7-0 spread.

Less than two minutes later, drive number two produced more points as Harris hauled in a 24 yard scoring toss from Schewe (6:16).

Taking advantage of a fumble recovery by Colton Fernstrum, the Maroons padded the cushion to 20-zip with 5 minutes left in the half. Brown scooted 23 yards on the 8th play of the march for points.

A pass interception by Brilinski in the third quarter enabled the Maroons to push the upper hand to 27-0 (6:26). Hines broke free on a 37 yard jaunt to set up a 7 yard Schewe to Harris scoring pass.

Pass interceptions by Hines and Francour resulted in scoring runs of 3 and 29 yards by Brilinski for a 41-0 lead with 1:56 left in period three.

Gladstone finally cracked the scoring column with 9:36 remaining as Jared Vuksan blasted over from 4 yards out.

Menominee did manage a late score on a yard run by Brown with 1:29 left.

“It has been fun going into each game as different kids have been making plays for us. We have 5-6 kids that can get it done on offense and score from anywhere,” Noha said.

The Maroons will put their unbeaten mark on the line Friday with a trip to Kingsford in an early season GNC showdown set to begin at 6:30pm. The Flivvers are 3-1 on the season after dropping a 36-14 clash to LaCrosse Central.

“This should be a good battle up there and if you look at the history of the two teams and the GNC, it has either been Kingsford or Menominee on top. This is too early in the year to call it a must-win, but it will be a big game for both of us.

“Kingsford has always been a physical team that likes to control the lines and come right at you. Offensively they execute the trap very well and send a lot of pressure on defense. They have a D-1 recruit in Reed Larson who is 210 pounds and quick. Our goal is to try and contain him and close off the outside,” Noha explained.
