Coleman Stays Unbeaten, Peshtigo Improves To 10-2 With just 4 rounds remaining on the M-O Conference calendar, the Coleman Cougars continue their drive towards a league title following a trio of wins. The Cougars disposed of Gillett and Lena in a Thursday triangular then swept Niagara to improve to 12-0 in league play.
Second place Peshtigo is also red hot and sits two games back following three league victories. A triangular sweep along with a rout of Crivitz keeps coach Lynn Kostreva and her netters within striking distance.
Putting together a late surge, the Wausaukee Rangers (9-3) rolled to a trio of victories, taking care of Suring and STAA Thursday before knocking off Lena on Tuesday.
Conference play has dual matches on October 2, 4 and 9 before concluding on October 11 with triangular outings.
Bulldogs Unscathed
In Triangular Match
Peshtigo bullied its way to a pair of victories in a home triangular combining heavy hitting up front with the communication and all around smart play that head coach Lynn Kostreva has been looking for in recent wins from her group.
We played very good ball tonight, said Kostreva. I liked our communication and our movement on the floor. We are really talking well out on the court.
The first game saw Peshtigo come out on the winning end of some very long points against Niagara 25-15. Time after time, the Badgers would rifle shots that looked good enough to be winners down the line, only to have them dug by the likes of Nicole Motkowski (28 digs, 29 assists, six kills) or Shannen Ganter (35 digs, 16 kills).
Peshtigo did an efficient job of keeping tough shots from their opponents in play in this one. From there, assist specialist Allie Morris (12 digs, 29 assists, five aces) was busy feeding the front line perfectly placed set up shots that went for more than a couple of uncontested kills.
While the first game of the match ended with the Bulldogs out front comfortably, the second came with its share of adversity as the Niagara squad badgered Peshtigo into some early miscues and took a 9-7 lead. Niagara then jumped out to a three-point advantage when Maryellen Wagener (21 kills, eight blocks, seven digs, three assists) and Shelby Borchardt (five kills, eight digs and a block) teamed up at the net to block a kill from the usually unblockable right arm of Hannah Romenesko (31 digs, 18 kills, two aces).
But thats precisely when Peshtigos ever-evolving communication skills on the court came into play as the Bulldogs corrected their course and roared back to tie things up at 10 with a three-point run that started with a nasty kill from Taylor Romenesko (25 digs, eight blocks, 19 kills).
From there, it was a back and forth race to 25. The two teams swapped the lead right up to the end but it was Peshtigo who came out on top 25-21 as Morris set up Taylor Romenesko for another hard kill to close out the second game.
As in game two, the Bulldogs got another very competitive effort out of the Badgers in game three. Peshtigo kept its cool when the score got knotted up late and went on to win, this time the critical play for Peshtigo coming off a touch shot at the net by Carly Dietrich (eight digs, four assists, nine kills).
The Bulldogs took a breather while the Badgers got all they could handle for three games from Crivitz.
Th Wolverines claimed a five point lead in their opener against Niagara behind tough play up front from Star Batten (four kills, two blocks) and hard serving from Jen Kempka (three aces, 27 assists, four digs) and Vikki Neumann (two digs, three kills).
But the Badgers kept pace with the Wolverines and took a two-point lead at a critical moment in that opening game with a block from Wagener against Batten at the net before securing the 25-22 win minutes later.
Niagara managed to survive another close one in game two, winning 31-29, before a game three win that saw the Badgers take advantage of some costly Crivitz errors as well as some strong serving from Wagener and some well-placed kills from Shanna Nordell (six digs, a block and 10 kills).
The last match of the evening was all Peshtigo as the Bulldogs overwhelmed the Wolverines for two games (25-18, 25-15) before surviving a close third frame 25-23 to wrap up play for the night.
In addition to players previously mentioned, Crivitz got solid performances from Miranda Beaudry (eight kills, two aces and a dig) as well as Britany Gorman (eight kills, four digs and an ace).
Coleman Dominates
Gillett, Lena Netters
Coleman got a couple of competitive matches from Lena and host team Gillett in triangular play and managed to survive without dropping a single game to stay on top of the M&O Conference standings.
The Cougars took care of Lena 25-16, 25-23, 25-23 and then tamed the Tigers 25-14, 25-21, 25-23.
Leading the way for Coleman was Makenzie Sadowski with 19 kills and three blocks; Lindsey Kerr 26 assists and a pair of aces and abbey Bieber 27 digs and seven kills.
Gillett was paced on the evening by Kelsey Hischkes nine aces, 18 digs and three spikes; Mel Meunier five digs, 18 assists and an ace; Alex Schmitz chipped in 16 kills, and a block while Kathryn DeJung had three aces and 12 assists.
Rangers Roll To
Pair of M-O Wins
Wausaukee dropped only a single game on its way to a pair of victories in a home triangular.
The Rangers took care of Suring 25-9, 23-25, 25-23, 25-22 and then picked up a 25-19, 25-11, 25-20 win over STAA.
Were about where we figured wed be in the standings, were an undersized team playing to its strengths, said Rangers head coach Tom Pleyte. Im pleased with where were at overall. Its not a rebuilding year, were better than that. We just dont have quite enough size.
In Thursdays triangular, the Rangers were led by Sara Wickmans six assists, 19 kills and five aces; Kaylor DeLaet 43 assists, six blocks, two kills and seven aces; Stevie Oldenberg two assists to go along with 16 kills and three aces while Laura Edlbeck notched 17 kills to go along with three aces and an ace.
STAA was paced by Lilly Duffrins 14 kills, two blocks and nine digs; Kristin Sorensen 10 digs, two kills and four assists; Alyssa Hornick eight digs, nine assists and two aces while teammate Molly Linczeski had 12 digs and a kill.
For Suring, Kelsey School had 22 digs, five aces and four kills to lead the Eagles while Calley Van Bellinger added 13 kills, six blocks and nine digs.

Leading the way for Wausaukee was Kaylor DeLaet with 38 assists, four kills and eight aces; Sara Wickman 25 kills, six aces and a pair of assists; Stevie Oldenberg three assists, five blocks, 19 kills and two aces; Lauren Edlbeck four aces, 10 kills and three aces while Crysta Clark chipped in six aces, a kill and two assists.
Cavalettes Swept
By Stockbridge
In a tight non-league clash on Tuesday, STAA fell to Stockbridge 25-23, 25-14 and 25-18.
Riley Schultz had 12 digs and 4 aces for STAA, Kristin Sorensen 11 digs and 3 spikes, Linsey Hannon 7 digs and 4 assists, Allysa Hornick 7 digs, 2 spikes and 2 aces while Molly Linczeski ended up with 6 digs and 2 aces.
We are playing much better. We really need to keep some enthusiasm because that is when we play best, STAA coach Julie Chilcote said.
Stockbridge also swept the jayvee match.
