Dorothy Foley

Dorothy Wendel Foley, 87, died on Saturday, Oct. 20 at her home at Kirkland Lodge, Kirkland, Wash.

The second born to Clarence "Hap" and Victoria (Jartz) Wendel, she attended Sacred Heart Elementary and was a National Honor Society member at Marinette High School. She enrolled in Carroll College in Waukesha and transferred to UW-Madison, where she earned a bachelors of arts degree in Speech and French. She studied voice and had a passion for opera.

She began her career in Marinette at WMAM 570AM as copy chief. Following the death of her mother and with encouragement of family she moved with her friend, Betty Welborn to Chicago where she worked as a senior staff writer for American Broadcasting Company. Fulfilling a desire to travel, she joined Pan American World Airways as a stewardess, based in New York. She then worked at Shell Oil Company as Executive Travel Director and was a nationally syndicated newspaper columnist penning "Tips on Travel." She met Robert Stephan Foley in Birmingham, Ala. and the couple was married on June 8, 1957 and resided in Birmingham, where she worked as a news staffer at the Birmingham News.

Subsequent moves took them to Mobile, Ala.; Oklahoma City, Okla. and Tulsa, Okla. In each locale she put her writing and promotional talents to work at advertising agencies such as Young & Rubicam and McCann-Erickson, the YWCA, Leather Industries of America and joined the American Association of University Women and pursued post-graduate study. The family would vacation in Marinette during the summer and in 1970 they returned there, where she worked as a news reporter and feature writer for the Marinette Eagle-Star from 1970-1976. She was active in fundraising for local charities, Friday night fish fries and served on the board of directors of the Salvation Army.

The couple eventually moved to Florida where she embarked on a successful career as a technical writer/editor in the aerospace industry. Following her husband’s death in 1986 she transferred with Martin Marietta from Orlando, Fla. to Oak Ridge, Tenn., as a technical publications analyst and retired in 1994. She settled in the Seattle area and was active with the Bellevue Public Library, the Seattle Symphony and Pacific Northwest Ballet. She joined the Seattle Opera Guild and served on the board of directors, as well as publishing and editing their newsletter, L'Aria.

Survivors include two daughters, Dominique (Randall) Wilson of Albuquerque, N.M. and Shauna (Thomas) Saffle of Sammamish, Wash.; a sister, Patricia Scoggins of Marinette and many cousins, nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob; her parents; brothers, Sgt Robert Wendel and Harold Wendel and aunt and uncles, Mary and Reuben Wendel and Ward Wendel.

A celebration of life will be held in Marinette during the summer of 2013. The Dorothy Wendel Foley Memorial Scholarship has been established through the Marinette Catholic Central Foundation. The family requests that any expression of sympathy and kindness be directed to the scholarship fund that has been established in her honor: Marinette Catholic Central Foundation, P.O.
