The Price of Freedom

On Sunday, Nov. 11, we honored our veterans for their unwavering service and sacrifice. This Year of the Veteran we commemorate, acknowledge, and affirm the contributions made by our veterans to secure the liberties we continue to enjoy.

Veterans served with courage and honor. But why were they willing to fight? They served because they believe not that war is good, but that sometimes it is necessary. They served not for the glory of war, but for the prize of freedom.

Who were these men and women who fought for the prize of freedom?

I read with great appreciation just a few days ago of one such individual who, like so many, went to war not knowing if he would come back. He dared risk it all for the prize of freedom.

James Des Jardins, Green Bay, was a young fighter pilot whose plane was shot down in the German countryside in November 1944. He had been Missing in Action since. Recently, after all of these years, James Des Jardins was identified and his remains were returned to his family, a family that 68 years earlier had mourned and buried his older brother, also a pilot shot down during World War II. But this day, the day when James returned home, it was a day of celebration, not just for James’ homecoming, but for everything he sacrificed to defend. His family celebrated the gift James left for them: freedom.

Einar Ingman, Kewaskum, was an Army corporal who served in Korea. When the leaders of the two leading squads of the assault platoon of his company were wounded during a mission, he assumed command and combined the squads. He then located and charged an enemy machine gun that was attacking his men and threw a grenade at it. He killed the remaining crew with his rifle. He charged a second enemy machine gun. He was hit by grenade fragments and gunfire and seriously wounded. Before falling unconscious, he killed the entire enemy guncrew, compelling the remaining hostile troops to retreat. For his valor and actions beyond the call of duty, Ingman received the highest military honor, the Medal of Honor. Next week the Department will celebrate the gift of freedom Corporal Ingman gave us as we unveil a monument at the Wisconsin Veterans Home at King to Wisconsin’s 62 Medal of Honor recipients.

These are just two stories of selflessness and gallantry among thousands, stories of men and women who revered freedom. They defended our right to live in peace. And they deserve to be celebrated.

So this year, let’s celebrate the nearly 400,000 veterans living in Wisconsin and those who are no longer with us. Let’s celebrate the men and women who stood up for you and me. They have made our world safer, more democratic, more peaceful. They defeated the forces of facism, imperialism, and terrorism. This is the prize of freedom.

Today, and every day, let us celebrate the Wisconsin men and women who have served our country, appreciate their sacrifices, and take a moment to honor the legacy of these heroes and especially those who made the ultimate sacrifice.

Letter to the Editor:

As a taxpayer in the Wausaukee School District, I would like to share one of many grave concerns I have regarding the functioning of this district. It wasn’t that long ago that we were told that the district was broke - that we were headed for dissolution unless a referendum was passed in order to “save” the school.

Since then the amount of money that has been needlessly spent has been appalling. The student enrollment has gone down so state aid has decreased, the class offerings have diminished, teachers have taken pay freezes and reductions, and many valuable staff members have been lost, and yet one teacher has been given a substantial raise so she wouldn’t take a job in another district.

There seems to be no rhyme or reason for such important decisions to be made and one seriously has to wonder how much thought really goes into some of these decisions. When a principal was being offered a position in another district, school board members said “no man is worth an extra $10,000” but then gave a $5,700 raise to a teacher because she was offered a contract in another district.

Recently in the Peshtigo Times, School Board President Dave Kipp stated that “It’s a sad day... It’s a very sad day for the Wausaukee School District” when announcing the recent lost arbitration cases, yet never once explained how the $36,750 payout could easily have been avoided � sad days indeed.

What Have We Come To?

We have taken the Word of God out of our schools and don’t pray in school, and look what we have come to. Look what has happened to our children.

We listen to the ACLU rather than the Word of God and don’t spank our children, and look what has happened to our country.

We put the ACLU above the Word of God and allow homosexuality to the point of marriage when there are at least 14 passages in the Bible AGAINST it.

We have legalized abortion, contrary to the Word of God, and allow thousands of children to be murdered every day by abortion.

They openly kill our people in the Middle East and we continue to send them money?

We give billions of dollars of Social Security money to people to have never paid into it and wonder why the system is broke. That is for people who have WORKED for it all their lives by paying into it for retirement.

We listen to environmentalists and pay outrageous prices for gasoline when we have a 100-year supply under our western states.

We allow pornography that 7 and 8 year old children can see on the internet and call it “Freedom of Speech”?

And now we’re supposed to say “Happy Holidays” and not use the word Christmas so we won’t offend someone. How about the offense to millions of Christians?

MY GOD ALMIGHTY....WHAT HAVE WE COME TO!

Please, I beg of you, PLEASE read in the Bible 2 Chronicles 7:14 and take heed. If my people who are called by My name shall humble themselves and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from Heaven and will forgive their sin and will heal their land.

We need that now more than ever because you have voted the worst president in our history back in office. Aren’t you proud of yourself? Don’t complain when our most beautiful country collapses.

Well, Wisconsin, You Made History!

As I have said in the past, I am neither a Democrat nor a Republican, I am a Constitutional Conservative and with that said, let me also say this.

You elected one of the most liberal people in America to be your U.S. Senator. Electing a person that believes it is a good thing to allow the killing of defenseless babies; aren’t you proud of yourself? You elected a person who believes everyone should pay for birth control for the sexually promiscuous in society, I hope it is not your son or daughter; aren’t you proud of yourself?

You elected a senator that loathes the military; aren’t you proud of yourself? You elected a person so smart she knows better than you what health care you need. Gee, are we really that stupid we need her to tell us what health care we need?Aren’t you proud of yourself?

You are sending to Washington a person on a mission to get gay marriage legalized nationwide; aren’t you proud of yourself? You are sending Tammy Baldwin, a professed gay, who sees herself as a role model for that cause; aren’t you proud of yourself? By electing Tammy Baldwin to the U.S. Senate it helps prove Obama was right when he said we are no longer a Christian nation; aren’t you proud of yourself?

You voted for Baldwin and claim to be a Christian. Oh, really. On the other hand, you did not vote for Baldwin/Obama and claim to be a Christian, you may very well be.

We all will have to suffer with your mistake, Wisconsin; aren’t you proud of yourself?

God, please save America, You are the only one who can!
