Peshtigo Bops Bonduel

After watching a 10 point first half lead melt into a 42-36 fourth quarter deficit, the Bulldogs showed plenty of resiliency in rallying for a hard earned 50-44 non-conference home win over Bonduel Thursday.

A 12-0 run to start the fourth quarter put the Bears up by 6 points, before Peshtigo closed out the game on a 14-2 run.

“It was frustrating not to be able to extend the lead when we had the opportunity, but our kids have played enough basketball over the years to keep on competing. Borkovec hit a couple of big threes while Berth and Neumann added some huge plays,” Peshtigo coach Ryan Spaulding said. “This was a good early season learning experience, but we need our 5-6-7th players to step up and help. AJ Woller did that with a lift when we needed it in the fourth quarter.”

Connecting on just 7 of 26 shots from behind the arc (27%), the Bulldogs relied on their defense to stay on top. Spaulding saw his troops mix a man defense with a 1-3-1 to extend on the Bonduel shooters and key a 27-20 halftime lead.

“We like our man defense better, but were able to mix it up with a 1-3-1. Both worked, but we need to adjust earlier and on the shooters quicker,” Spaulding added.

Junior guard Zach Neumann paced Peshtigo with 14 points and 4 rebounds, Jordan Berth added 10 points, 7 rebounds, 5 steals and 2 assists, Gunner Kinney 7 points, 7 rebounds and 4 assists while Borkovec chipped in with 7 points, 3 steals and 2 rebounds.

Peshtigo found the mark of 15-53 field goals (28%), 13-21 free throws (62%) and turned the ball over 11 times. Off the backboards, the Bulldogs came out on the short end of a 26-23 mark.

After Bonduel netted the opening bucket, Peshtigo ran off 13 straight points. Neumann canned two free throws and a jumper while Borkovec and Dakota Keller drilled treys. Bonduel didn’t back down and on the strength of a three pointer by Conner Rosin and jumper by 6’4 Zach Zernicke managed to close the gap to 14-7 at the first break.

Four points by Berth along with a Neumann trey (5:54) staked the Bulldogs to a 25-14 spread. It didn’t stay that way very long as baskets by Brandon Hagel and Jacob DeBauch got Bonduel within 25-20 before Berth sliced his way to the hoop for a 27-20 Bulldog edge at the half.

Just 23 seconds into the third quarter Neumann found the mark on a trey for a 30-20 lead and it looked like the Bulldogs had a great opportunity to pull away.

It never happened.

Bonduel cut the deficit to 30-24 on buckets by DeBauch and Logan Artis (6’5) before Berth grabbed a missed three throw attempt by Kinney and converted a three point play for a 33-24 edge (3:05). Artis answered with a three point shot for the Bears only to see Woller score on an offensive rebound to put Peshtigo up 36-30 at the end of three periods.

Utilizing fullcourt pressure to open the fourth quarter, Bonduel forced numerous turnovers and ran off 12 straight points to pry open a 42-36 lead. Rosin drilled a trey while Colton Dobratz capped the spurt with a three point play at the 6:35 mark.

Down but certainly not out, the Bulldogs went back to work. Making their way through the press, Peshtigo used a three point shot by Neumann along with a basket by Woller to get within 44-42 (4:20).

Following a steal by Berth, Borkovec dialed in from long distance to give Peshtigo the lead for good at 45-44 (3:41). Holding the lead, the Bulldogs decided to let some air out of the ball and scored their final 5 points from the free throw line. Woller went 2-4 while Neumann added a 3-4 effort to seal the win.

“When things got tough in the fourth quarter, Neumann settled us down. I really liked his tempo at the point and he made some big shots. Berth also played smart to run clock and score,” Spaulding concluded.

Rosin topped Bonduel with 12 points while Artis added 9 points and 7 rebounds.

In the jayvee game, Peshtigo claimed a 40-29 win behind 12 points from Marcus Sharkey.

Patriots Clip

Crivitz 43-40

With 6’7 Brennan Pierquet tossing in 15 points and grabbing 9 rebounds, the Goodman-Pembine Patriots knocked off visiting Crivitz Thursday 43-40. The Patriots trailed 14-6 at the opening buzzer before taking a halftime lead with a 12-2 second quarter surge.

Goodman-Pembine extended the upper hand to 32-26 after three frames and held on in the fourth quarter. Roman Grebin connected for the go-ahead basket then added two free throws with 13 seconds left to seal the win.

Grebin and Alex Whitt scored 8 points each while Trent Heath and Bose chipped in with 4 each.

The Wolverines were sparked by the return of junior forward Ben Fischer with 19 points while Colton Lange and Jake Wiedemeier added 6 points each.

Crivitz made 15 of 45 shots(33%) and the Patriots 19-38 (50%). In the rebounding department, the Patriots owned a 27-24 edge with AJ Garcia and Fischer nabbing 8 boards each.

Wausaukee Tops

Laona-Wabeno

In a closely contested clash Friday night, Wausaukee took to the road and pulled out a thrilling 63-61 win over Laona-Wabeno. The Rangers owned a 29-23 halftime edge and took a 41-35 lead into the fourth quarter.

Down the stretch things got interesting as the host Rebels used a three-point play by Logan Chrisman and 3-point shot by Zach Reeves to go ahead 59-58. Wausaukee answered with some excellent free throw shooting by Beau DeLaet and Aaron Schlies as both cagers connected on two tosses each in the final minute. Schlies swished a pair with :04 left for the winning margin.

After the free throws by Schlies, Chrisman drove the length of the court and saw a potential game winning three point shot miss the mark. Chrisman had a big night surpassing the 1000 point mark for his career with 20. Reeves added 21 for the Rebels.

Hitting on a trio of 3-pointers, Zach Orlando fired in a team high 17 points for Wausaukee, Schlies added 15 and DeLaet 12.

Cavaliers Cruise

Past White Lake

With Kiefer Powers and Jameson Bardowski combining for 50 points, STAA had no trouble knocking off visiting White Lake 63-40. The Cavaliers built up a 26-22 halftime lead before outscoring White Lake 37-18 over the final 16 minutes.

Powers finished with a game high 28 points, including 8-9 free throws while Bardowski added 9 baskets and 4 charity tosses.

Kris Gallagher topped White Lake with 15 points and Luke Wickersheim added 13.

In the jayvee game, STAA claimed a 39-26 win.
