Coleman Captures Oshkosh Mat Classic

In what was expected to be a rebuilding year for Coleman wrestling might turn into a reloading campaign after coach Kevin Casper watched his grapplers capture top honors at the 60-team Oshkosh On the Water mat classic for the fourth straight year.

Despite not having any individual champions, Coleman piled up 278.5 points to hold off Wittenberg-Birnamwood 245.5 and Chilton 221.5 for the crown.

Depth was the key ingredient in Coleman’s championship run as 10 grapplers battled their way for tournament places. Heading the list of point producers was Jensyn Schaal (17-2) after posting a runner-up finish in the 120 pound bracket.

Other top finishes for Coleman were Trevor Seewald third at 145, fourth place for Marc Lansin (132) and Mason Mergener (152), 5th Jackson Margis at 126, Isaac Nowak sixth at 195, Dexter Karban 8th in the 160 bracket, Derick Teteak (106) and CJ Pillath (220) were 10th while Jordan Micheels claimed 12th at 182 pounds.

“I am really proud of our team’s first place finish...know there probably wasn’t too many people thinking we could win the 60 team tourney, but our wrestlers rose to the occasion and just keep getting better every time out,” coach Casper said. “ It was a team effort with 10 of our 13 wrestlers placing.”

Competing in the 120 pound division, Schaal totaled 39.5 points with his second place finish. Improving to 17-2 on the season, Schaal opened with four straight wins before dropping a 10-7 championship bout to Arch Ratliff of Perry High School (20-4). After a first round bye, Schaal posted victories of 16-1, 10-9, pinned Fritz Vogel of Deerfield in 3:55 before stopping Bobby Ettecht of Wittenberg-Birnamwood 7-5 in the semifinals.

“Jensyn was very dominating throughout the tourney, beating some excellent kids along the way. He manhandled the kid from Deerfield that was a state participant last year,” Casper added.

Sporting a 17-4 readout, Seewald picked up a bronze medal in the 145 weight class with a 6-1 tourney mark. Seewald’s lone loss came in a 5:00 pin by Dalton Tielens of Green Bay Preble/East in the quarterfinals. Forced to work his way back, Seewald closed out the meet with 4 straight wins, including a thrilling 3-2 decision over Jon Goetz of West Bend West in the battle for third place.

“Trevor took third and had an awesome tournament... wrestled extremely well. He lost a heartbreaking semifinal match to the eventual champion, getting a takedown with about 30 seconds to go up by 3 points, got out of position and flipped to his back and pinned. Otherwise Trevor could have won the tournament,” Casper explained.

In the 132 bracket, Marc Lansin (17-3) turned some heads with a 4th place mark and 31 points for the Cougars. Lansin opened with 3 wins before falling 6-3 to Kody Zembal of Wilmot Union in the semis. After nipping Joey Davey of Whitefish Bay 1-0 in wrestle back, Lansin dropped a 3-2 third place decision to Joey Pelkey of Cedarburg.

“Marc Lansin took fourth which is fantastic for a sophomore that had his first taste of a big tournament on a big stage....lost a very close match in the semifinals to the eventual champion, “Casper remarked.

Despite battling the flu bug, Mason Mergener put together a 5-2 tournament mark on his way to a fourth place finish at 152 pounds.

Now 19-2 on the season, Mergener opened with wins over Cody Hallam of Preble/East 10-3 and Dom Ramirez of Lena-STAA 5-1 before falling to Cole Hansen of Marshall 7-5.

Mergener bounced back with a trio of wins, including a pin over Hunter Messerschmidt of Winneconne 2:48, 5-3 win over Bryce Bennot of Wautoma/Wild Rose and 7-5 over Colin Schubert of Southern Door. Heading into the third place match, Mergener fell 6-4 to Mitchell Fucile of Chilton, who is now 21-1 on the year.

“This was probably the toughest weight class in the tournament and Mason wrestled really well,” Casper said.

Margis (14-6) went 4-2 in the 126 pound bracket, capping his busy tournament with a 6-4 decision over Fritz Schierl of Stevens Point in the 5th place match.

“Jackson had a great tournament at 126 pounds,” Casper commented.

After opening with 3 straight wins, defending state champion Isaac Nowak (15-5) finished 6th at 195 pounds. Nowak dropped his final 3 bouts, including a 1:57 pin by Mason Strum of Freedom for 5th place.

Three other M-O teams competed with Lena-STAA claiming 38th place and 87 points, Peshtigo 45th with a score of 64 and Gillett-Suring 58th at 34.

Sam Beschta (220) and Mike Kallies paced Lena-STAA with fourth place finishes while Hunter Madden (126) and DJ Messenger had 11th place marks for Peshtigo.

Crivitz Matmen 8th

At Northern Badger

Piling up 93 points, Crivitz tied for 8th place at the 15-team Northern Badger mat classic in River Falls.

Clear Lake was the tournament champion with 285 points followed by Glenwood City 192.5 and Spring Valley/Elmwood 179.5.

Joe Rodriquez had the top finish for Crivitz in 7th place with a 4-2 tourney mark in the 220 pound class. Three of the wins for Rodriquez came via pins.

Heavyweight Zach Timblin was 8th, Jake Dobesh 9th at 152 pounds and Danny Tomaszewski 10th (182).
