Coleman Cleans Up At Cutler Classic

With six of his finest grapplers bringing home titles, the Coleman Cougars captured top honors at the 10-team Cutler Classic in New London Saturday with 282.5 points.

Putting together gold medal performances were Derick Teteak 106, Jensyn Schaal 120, Trevor Seewald, 145, Mason Mergener 152, Dexter Karban 160 and Isaac Nowak 195.

Second place in the team standings went to Oshkosh North 243 followed by Little Chute 226, Menasha 206, New London 188, Sturgeon Bay 128, New Holstein 94, Waupaca 81, Weyauwega-Fremont 72 and Appleton East 69.

“Overall the entire team wrestled outstanding. We had nine in the finals and 6 champions. Little Derick Teteak at 106 had an awesome tourney pinning a boy from New London that he lost to earlier in year in finals. Other champions were 120 Jensyn Schaal, who just keeps getting better and better; 145 Trevor Seewald had an awesome tourney winning the Most Valuable Wrestler. In the finals, he dominated Potroski of Waupaca, who was state place winner last year,” Coleman coach Kevin Casper said.

“Mason Mergener dominated everyone throughout the tourney and is starting to dominate on his feet which makes him very dangerous down the stretch if he continues that trend. Dexter Karban had a fantastic tourney...he is finally healthy and it showed by tearing apart the competition. Isaac Nowak was back to the Isaac we all know, pinning all comers. ”

Teteak (20-7) got the Cougars rolling with 4 wins and the 106 title that included two pins, a technical fall and a 6-4 semifinal decision over Kyle Schwartz of Oshkosh North. In the finals, Teteak put Skylar Moderson of New London on his back in 1:57.

Schaal overpowered the 120 pound field with two byes and three wins to improve to 23-2. Schaal registered technical falls of 22-4 and 17-2 before topping Jake Close of New London 8-6 in the finals.

Tourney MVP, Trevor Seewald, used a pair of pins along with two decisions to push his season mark to 23-4.

In the semifinals, Seewald whipped Bailey Whipple of Menasha 13-6 before topping Levi Petroske of Waupaca 18-8 in the finals.

Mergener racked up five tournament wins on his way to the 152 crown. Now 25-2 for his senior campaign, Mergener opened with pins of 0:47, 2:25 and 3:33 before finishing things off with 12-2 major decisions over Andrew Moser of New London and Anthony Friese of Waupaca.

Four pins and a 10-5 decision in the title match gave Dexter Karban (20-5) top honors at 160 pounds. Karban needed 3:01 to pin Shane Schwaller of Little Chute in the semis before beating Clayton Grunewald 10-5 in the finals.

Coleman’s sixth and final gold medal winner was Nowak at 195 pounds as the defending state champion registered five pins at the meet. Nowak required 38 seconds in the first round, 49 in round three before putting Ethan Dittel of Oshkosh North away for the title in 1:10.

Four other Cougars brought home silver medals as Jackson Margis (19-7) was second at 126 pounds, Marc Lansin (22-4) at 132, Kevin Lansin (15-8) at 138 and CJ Pillath (16-11) in the 220 pound bracket.

Brandon Champagne finished fifth at 113, Hunter Stodola 6th 170 and Colin Kempka 7th at 182 pounds.
