Coleman Clobbers Crivitz 59-27 Taking care of Crivitz in a rescheduled affair Saturday, the Coleman Cougars improved their M-O Conference leading mark to 10-0 with a 59-27 win.
The lopsided victory keeps Coleman 1 1/2 games ahead of second place Peshtigo (9-2), which pulled out a 30-25 road win over Suring.
Gillett stayed within striking distance of the leaders at 7-3 following a 68-20 whipping of visiting STAA and will travel to Coleman Friday in a key M-O clash.
Coleman Knocks Off
Crivitz 59-27 Saturday
The Wolverines opened Saturdays home game against the M-O leading Cougars on a positive note. Victoria Neuman pulled up and hit a jumper from beyond the arc and put Crivitz up on the board first with a 3-0 lead.
But the Coleman squad is undefeated in conference play for good reason. Theyre tough to beat and they showed the Crivitz faithful as much on Saturday as they promptly outscored the home team 16-1 before the Wolverines got another bucket from Neuman to quell the drought at 16-6. But Coleman answered right back before Crivitz could get any momentum going as LIndsey Kerr, who would go on to have a big game for the Cougars, scored inside, helping Coleman close the opening quarter up 18-8 on its way to a 59-27 victory.
The Cougars continued to apply pressure in the second quarter, never giving the Wolverines any glimmer of daylight.
Kerr opened the frame with a quick bucket, followed by a fruitless trip down the court for Crivitz thanks to pestering defense from Sammy Schaal that resulted in Makenzie Sadowski feeding Kerr for another bucket to make it 22-8 early in the second.
The Wolverines didnt get on the scoreboard in the second until about two minutes into the action when Kelsey Fickler hit a jumper to get her team into double-digit territory but had trouble doing much else right in the second as the Cougars started to put the game away.
Things didnt improve much for the Crivitz cagers to start the third. Kerr got things going for the Cougars again, this time stealing the ball and then closing the deal on the other end of the floor for a 33-17 Coleman lead. More bad news moments later for Crivitz as Fickler suffered an injury to her foot that would keep her off the floor for the rest of the game.
The Wolverines did manage eight points in that third period, highlighted by a play from Britany Gorman that saw the senior guard nab a steal of her own and take it the other way for two.
But hesitant passing time and again led to turnovers for Crivitz that in turn led to easy points for the Cougars and the visitors closed out the third comfortably ahead 43-21.
Coleman got 18 points each from Sadowski and Kerr, the games leading scorers, while teammate Hope Process turned in nine while Abby Bieber added six.
Neuman was the high scorer for Crivitz with an even 10 points, backed up by eight from Gorman and four from Jennifer Kempka.
Badgers Too Much
For Lady Rangers
It was a back and forth start Thursday as Niagara ended the first half of play on top 27-23 over Wausaukee, a lead it would hang on to for a 55-48 final.
It was the Badgers who took control in the first quarter, putting up 20 points to Wausaukees seven. But the Rangers bounced back in the second frame with a 16-7 showing to head into the break down only four at 27-23.
Niagaras freshman standout Brooklyn Wolosyn finished with 23 to lead all scorers but the difference in the game came from 10 points and nine boards from Jenna Carlton as well as the full-fledged double double from Maryellen Wagener, who finished with 10 points and 11 boards
We came out with a lot of intensity in the first, said Niagara head coach Laura Gunderson. Wagener was a huge asset for us tonight.
For Wausaukee, Sara Wickman had a solid outing with her 12 points to lead her team in scoring. Lauren Edlbeck chipped in 10 while Crysta Clark and Kaylor DeLaet each added nine.
Tigers Beat STAA
The Tigers didnt have a single player score in double digits against STAA Thursday but had a lot of players scoring enough points to pick up the lopsided 68-20 win at home.
After building a commanding 14-5 lead on the Cavalettes in the first quarter, the Tigers put the game out of reach with a 31-13 surge.
Rebecca Schroeder led the way for the winning team with nine points but Gillett also had four players tally eight points apiece as Missy Peterson, Kelsey Hischke, Nicole Rotter and Taylor Kohls combined for 32.
STAA got four apiece from Kayla Boye, Lilly Duffrin and Alyssa Hornick.
Bulldogs Survive Suring
The Peshtigo girls used a well-balanced scoring attack to slip past the Suring Eagles on the road Thursday by a final score of 30-25.
The low-scoring affair was kicked off by a 5-1 first quarter in Peshtigos favor followed by an 8-4 edge by the Bulldogs in the second for a 13-5 halftime lead.
The Bulldogs slipped up with a three point third, next to nine for the home team, but bounced back with a 14-11 fourth to sew up the win.
Peshtigo was paced by seven from Amanda Emmes and five from Amanda Majewski while Suring got a game high 12 from Calley VanBellinger in defeat.
-Non League Results-
Wausaukee Whipped
By Stephenson 59-35
In a Saturday afternoon battle, the host Wausaukee cagers fell behind 33-14 at halftime and never recovered in suffering a 59-35 loss to Stephenson. Using fullcourt pressure to key a 17-4 second quarter run, Stephenson was able to pull away to a big halftime lead.
We had that stretch in the second quarter where we made a lot of bad decisions that lead to easy fastbreak points...dug a big hole for us, Wausaukee coach Jon Betts said. I thought we made some good adjustments in the second half and played pretty well. The girls never gave up and played hard, but we couldnt overcome the deficit created in the first half.
Crysta Clark was the lone Wausaukee player in double figure scoring with 10 points, Charleen Fick added 7, Stevie Oldenburg and Lauren Edlbeck 5 each while Kaylor DeLaet chipped in with 4.
Kaitlin Miller paced a trio of Eagles in double digit scoring with 17 points, Tiffany Wangerin scored 15 and Lexi Johnson 11.
Wausaukee made 28% of its shots (14-50) and turned the ball over 32 times.
In the jayvee game, Wausaukee registered a 32-13 win.
Coleman Clobbers
Stephenson 51-31
The Cougars didnt have much trouble dispatching the Eagles of Stephenson 51-31 in a non-league matchup on the hardwood Monday night.
Abby Bieber had a big game, turning in 16 points for the Cougars to lead all scorers. Makenzie Sadowski wasnt far behind with 13 while Lindsey Kerr added 10 as the Cougars jumped out front 13-8 after one quarter of play and then dominated the Eagles in the second for an 11-2 frame, making it 24-10 at the break.
Lexi Johnson turned in 15 to pace Stephenson.
Eagles Fall To Shiocton
The Shiocton Chiefs put together a well-balanced game Monday, running over the host Suring cagers by a final of 48-29.
Surings Calley VanBellinger led all scorers with 11 total but it wasnt enough to make up the lack of output from the rest of the team.
Shiocton got 10 points by Erin Schroth; eight from both Jonalee Elliot and Carmen McCarthy and another seven each from Samantha Schmidt and Corrie McCarthy.
Stockbridge Too
Much For STAA
The STAA Cavalettes were scoring some points on Tuesday at Stockbridge but couldnt come up with the victory, falling to the Indians by a final of 47-21.
Lilly Duffrin was the top point scorer for STAA with seven while the Cavalettes got four each from Taylor Wilson, Kayla Boye and Riley Schultz.
