Leonard Lees

Leonard Lees, 87, died Tuesday, Jan. 22 after a brief illness.

Born Oct. 22, 1925 in Krakow to Albert and Pearl (Robak) Lees, he was the eldest of three children. The family left the farm and moved to Green Bay in 1942, where he attended Green Bay East High School.

Shortly after graduation he began working as an oiler in the Merchant Marines with Reiss Shipping Line, but a few months later was drafted and served two years in the United States Navy. After his discharge, he returned to the Merchant Marines. The very model of a self-made man, he rose steadily through the ranks to position of chief engineer. He remained in this position until taking early retirement to spend more time with his family in April of 1972. On Feb. 7, 1948 he married Dolores "Dee" Berken, the sister of his Navy friend, Ray Berken. The couple lived in suburban Green Bay and raised four children. She passed away Aug. 17, 1979.

After his retirement he worked briefly for Brebner Caterpillar Service in Green Bay, then as a partner, started Westside Tractor Service. He sold his share and retired permanently in 1980. On July 10, 1981, he married Evelyn (Larmore) Feldman. For several years they alternated homes between their lake property in Athelstane and a winter home in Lakeland, Fla. They settled permanently in Lakeland in 2001. His wife, Evelyn preceded him in death Nov. 12, 2011. He enjoyed socializing with friends, watching sports, playing on his computer, following politics and helping others at his transitional living complex in Azalea Park. He was an avid Green Bay Packer fan.

He is survived by four children, Andrea (Craig) Collard, Mary (Joe) Kovach, Tina (Dennis ) Kurth and Robert Lees; stepchildren, Patricia (Daniel) Andrae, Joseph (Carol) Feldman, James (Mary) Feldman, Richard Feldman, Mary Elizabeth (David) Gessert and Catherine (Dylan) Jones; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Richard Lees; a sister, Geri (Tom) Foley and many nieces, nephews and other relatives.

Preceding him in death were his wives, Dolores and Evelyn and a stepson, Robert (Nancy) Feldman.

Friends called at St. Bernard Catholic Church, Green Bay on Saturday, Feb. 2 from 9 a.m. until the Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. Rev. Mark Vandersteeg officiated and entombment was in the Allouez Catholic Chapel Mausoleum.
