Maroons Notch Tourney Opener, Move Into Finals

Dominating the middle quarters by a 35-16 advantage, the Menominee Maroons came up victorious in their MHSAA Class B District opener Monday night in Kingsford with a 61-46 win over Escanaba, a team they lost to by 12 points on Feb. 25.

Now 10-11 on the season, the Maroons will take on Gladstone, a 56-53 upset winner over heavily favored Kingsford in the district title game Wednesday, March 6 at 6pm in Gladstone.

The Maroons knocked off Gladstone (9-11) twice during GNC play, but beating a team three times in one season can be difficult.

“We beat Gladstone twice, but that doesn’t mean anything going into this game. If we play well on the defensive end we’ll have a chance. The winner of our game will take on the Cheboygan and Grayling winner in the regionals on March 11 in Grayling,” Maroon coach Pete Pericolosi said.

In their opening tournament win, the Maroons used a balanced scoring attack with 4 players in double figures. Travis Champeau continued his torrid shooting pace with five 3’s and 18 points, Bryan Hines added 17, Jared Rivard 11 and Devon Harris 10.

“Champeau shot well again and to have 4 guys in double figures is a bonus,” Pericolosi said. “Our free throw shooting needs some work as we went 18-32 for 56%. A good high school team should shoot around 70% and we have only been 52% all year.”

The Maroons fired away 18 times from behind the arc, making 7 with Champeau going 5-10. For the game Menominee hit on 18-48 shots (37%).

Trailing 14-12 at the first break, the Maroons unloaded a 23-10 second quarter surge, highlighted by the outside shooting of Champeau with all five of his treys.

The Maroon lead grew to 47-30 after three frames before Escanaba tried to rally in the fourth quarter (16-14) but came up short.

“Defensively we played a lot better, clogged the middle and were only outrebounded by two boards. In our loss to Escanaba two weeks ago, we got outrebounded by 14. Escanaba ran into foul trouble early as their 6’5, 250 pound center LaPalm picked up 3 fouls in the first quarter. We also took 3 charges in the first quarter,” Pericolosi added.

Brandon Robinette paced Escanaba with 15 points.

With senior guard Travis Champeau connecting 10 times from behind the three point line, the Maroons registered a 67-54 road win over Menominee Thursday night. Champeau was obviously the star of this non-league win, totaling 33 points in the regular season finale.

Menominee finished with a 12-34 shooting mark from three point land with Champeau connecting on 10 of 22 shots. Jared Rivard was the number two scorer for Menominee with 13 points, Bryan Hines added 7 and Jeremy Rivard 6.

Menominee finished with a 23-64 shooting mark (36%).

“They left Champeau wide open all game and he just kept on shooting. He is our best outside shooter and when left open, can score,” Pericolosi said.

After gaining a 9-6 edge at the first break, Menominee unloaded a 21-14 second period charge to go up 30-20. With Champeau and mates zeroing in from long range, the Maroons controlled the second half by a 37-34 edge.

Casey Wilson topped Stephenson with 17 points, Travis Wangerin 12 and Josh Eckert 9.

In the jayvee game, Menominee posted a 50-24 win.
