He was born to the late Johann and Maria (Amstadt) Gaertner on May 9, 1929, in Yugoslavia. He married Salome Wittmann on April 21, 1948, in Germany. His family came over to the United States of America from Germany in 1951. He worked his whole life in Chicago as a mason until his retirement.

Born Aug. 13, 1945, in Marinette, he spent summers with his wife, Dolores boating, fishing, visiting relatives, and maintaining his cabin in the north woods of Wisconsin.
