DOOR JAMBS-Grandparents for Action, a local group of grandparents assisted the Peshtigo School District in securing these door jambs by collecting more than $11,000.00 in donations from the community to purchase them.  "JUST IN KASE" safety door jamb units were received at both the Peshtigo Middle/High School and the Peshtigo Learning Center buildings Friday, April 20th. Holding a "JustinKase" unit taken from the 111 units stacked up on skids are left to right: Brian Williams, Director of Buildings and Grounds, Kathy Crabtree and Beverly Doucette, Grandparents for School Safety, Mr. Chad Sodini, Peshtigo High/Middle Schools Principal.

Just In Kase Door Jambs Now at Peshtigo Schools

Issue Date: April 26, 2018

Ironically, at the same time panic was gripping the Florida Franklin High School because a shooter was loose in its hallways having already struck one student, "JustinKase" shooter safety door jambs were being unloaded from the delivery truck parked behind the Peshtigo School yard.  "It doesn't take a very big leap of the mind to realize how important this recent shipment was as you're getting that type of information," Bev Doucette stated, "It is so sad, something like that impacts so many people and leaves its scars forever. The sickening impacts these types of shootings create are far reaching and today even at this exciting moment for us to finally have the door jambs at our school it brings you back to reality of what and why we were together at this moment."

Because a 17 year old Wisconsin high schooler, Justin Rivard, of Somerset used his shop class to make the "JustinKase"" his name for a metal device that takes six seconds to jam a door and stop potential intruders from entering a classroom, today the Peshtigo School District will be able to equip each of their classrooms with a one of these newly invented units. The "JustinKase" model of the door jamb appears to offer the best mode of defense based on our observation, testing in the school and discussions with  school personnel that it would absolutely increase school safety and decrease potential killings in the event of a shooter situation in Peshtigo school buildings. These door jambs will be used to enhance other safety measures being put in place by the Peshtigo School District in an effort to make the students, faculty and staff as safe as possible given the circumstances of this kind. The door jambs have made a difference in our community as a whole as no person is untouched by the tragedy when a school shooting occurs, and parents especially have felt a peace knowing measures are being taken to protect their children while in school. Peshtigo School System has taken the lead in the State of Wisconsin in pursuing and implementing safety measures in the schools here. Their efforts have not gone unnoticed as the Wisconsin Department of Public Instruction, Tony Evers, State Superintendent is interested in making a visit to the Peshtigo schools to take a look at the shooter safety measures taking place in them once everything is in place.

Grandparents for Action want to thank everyone who contributed to the purchase of the "JustinKase" safety door jambs.

The story of how the "JustinKase" came to be in the hands of Peshtigo Schools is actually a community effort resulting in really great results.

Doucette shares that she was watching the national news on TV when this story came on touting a Wisconsin high schooler who used his shop class to make a "JustinKase" safety device that could increase school safety and decrease potential killings in the event of a shooter and would stop potential intruders getting into classrooms during a lockdown.

"Catching my attention I grabbed the remote and quickly recorded this news clip, and then later I sat down at the computer and looked it over, critiquing its plausibility. As would be normal for me I went to the phone and I called the company that was making these door jambs," said Doucette. "Realizing that this device had real potential for its cause I immediately called other grandparents in the Peshtigo School District to get them on board and formed a group we call: "Grandparents for Action." With her friend and fellow grandma Kathy Crabtree and I taking the lead we made our pitch to Mr. Sodini, principle of Peshtigo High/Middle Schools discussing this opportunity for school safety needs. Without hesitation he was on board showing a real interest in learning more about these door jambs, and from there it took on a life of its own.

Doucette called the maker of JustinKase again finding out that we were actually among the very first schools in Wisconsin to show this amount of interest in the device. I ordered a sample door jamb to give to the school and asked if there was any way we could expedite that samples arrival in Peshtigo it was decided that Justin Rivard, inventor of the, "JustinKase" along with his representative would deliver the sample device to Peshtigo school themselves. Mr. Sodini opened his doors to other area school representatives to join him when the "JustinKase" was brought to the school and with a great attendance Justin took them through demonstrations as well as doing a walk through in the school measuring the many different door sizes with Brian Williams ensuring that his producers would make the exact sizes needed for every classroom to be secured.

Later at the George Webb /Eagle Truck Stop a representative of the Peshtigo School Board Julie Muenster along with a number of news media from radio to newspaper to TV stations gathered to get the scope on this newly invented safety door jamb and ask questions of its young inventor!

Doucette and Crabtree found out it would take about $12,000 to buy a JustinKase unit for every single door in the district: elementary and middle/high school, undaunted they pursued their initial course of making that happen even if it meant pounding on doors to get that kind of money, and indeed they would pound on doors!

"We took the bull by the horns; we realized what it was going to do for our children in these situations and had no intentions of being told it wouldn't be done! Not on our watch! We didn't just say, "Let Legislation do it, Politicians you do it. Walker, you do it. Use our tax dollars to do it' What we're doing doesn't need legislation; it needs grandparents," said Doucette. "Otherwise what happens? It goes in a circle: there's a school shooting, let's pray for them, let's march for them, let's think about them. In Peshtigo we said, "let's do this!" said Crabtree.

"Why would we wait? We're not going to. This is where we believe it has to start. It has to start. The door jams, we've been meeting with the school, talking with them. We got the money. We put it together. No expense at our school. But we're not waiting and why, because we don't have to wait," said Doucette.
