THE CITY REBORN FROM THE ASHES OF AMERICA'S MOST DISASTROUS FOREST FIRE
Area Students Write Essays for Scholarship
Issue Date: July 11, 2019
This year the Knights of Columbus Assembly 1782 Crivitz offered a scholarship to a student in the Crivitz and Wausaukee School district. The students were asked to write an essay on "What Patriotism means to me" In reading over the essays the judges could tell the students that took the time to apply for the scholarships had a true understanding of what patriotism is.
When I think of the word "Patriotism", the first image that pops into my head is an American flag dancing in the wind. While this may seem odd, it reminds me of everything our flag stands for, and one of those things is our Pledge of Allegiance. Our Pledge of Allegiance holds very important aspects of patriotism, in my own opinion. Patriotism can be defined as being devoted to and showing support for one's country. However, I feel that this is a very tiny glimpse into the many ways that patriotism can be shown. To me, Patriotism is the simple act of following some key phrases in our pledge of allegiance. For example, the phrase "One nation under God, indivisible, with liberty and justice for all." is very important to me. This demonstrates patriotism in itself. One nation, all people of every race and religion, with liberty and justice for all. All. All means including everyone and fighting for everyone to be equal. To me, being patriotic is something as simple as respecting others and remembering that one nation means everyone, no picking and choosing. Therefore, Patriotism does not have to be a large act, such as serving in our nation's military, it can be something as simple as voting non partisan in our next election.
No two people will have the same understanding of the word patriotism. I believe patriotism is a word that is far more than its definition. Patriotism is a characteristic and a way of life. It is not something you simply read about. Patriotism is a feeling, a characteristic, a personality, even. Patriotism is a word that makes you feel so strongly it shapes how you act.
You change the way you live because of this word and feeling. You act in a certain way that is influenced by hundreds of years in the past. Patriotism is the feeling inside when you see the flag flying in the wind or when you hear the Nation Anthem and get goosebumps. Loving my country, supporting it, and doing all I am capable of making it a more perfect union is what patriotism means to me. America was created with its main goal as freedom. Together, we stand for diversity. To have patriotism also means to allow people to believe in their own values.
Patriotism is also described as fighting for others freedom. Even though they do not have the same beliefs as you, you fight for them anyways. You do not push them to change their mind and believe in the same things as you. From our founding fathers to the courageous men and women fighting in the military today, their hearts are full with patriotism. They work harder than anyone to keep this country filled with freedom. Patriotism is an immeasurable characteristic that is expressed by acting in ways to serve their country and people.
