Hilma E. (Simonson) Backman, 95, of Marinette, passed away Monday, Sept. 9, 2019 at her home.
Born Sept. 24, 1923 in Astoria, Oregon, to Emil and Maria (Oja) Simonson, she spent her early life in Astoria where she attended primary and secondary schools. She came to Upper Michigan and graduated from Suomi College in Hancock. She returned to Astoria during World War II and worked for the Red Cross at Fort Clatsop, Oregon. She married Ralph John Backman in Astoria on Aug. 24, 1946. During his ministry as a pastor in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America, they lived in several regional communities. Later she worked in banking management. They retired to Arizona and moved to Marinette to reside at Northland Village.
She is survived by four children, Rodney J. (Joanne) Backman of Richmond Hill, Ga., Mary A. (Thomas) Hayward of Menominee, Lisa E. (Michael) Smith of Tucson, Az. and Kaye A. (Robert) Carleton of Eagle River, Ak.; nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Along with her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Ralph; a son, Mark and 11 brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be held at Zion Lutheran Church in Marinette on Friday, Oct. 11 from 9 a.m. until time of a Memorial Service at 11 a.m., with Rev. Keith Kolstad officiating. Hansen Onion Martell Funeral Home of Marinette is assisting the family with arrangements.
