Wolverines Hold Early M&O Conference Lead

Issue Date: September 19, 2019

Algoma at Peshtigo

The crowd at this volleyball game was treated to some excellently played volleys. Algoma and Peshtigo both were coming off huge wins from earlier on in the week. Algoma was able to pull off the win of the first set 25-22. This score was telling of how much these teams were to battle each other throughout the night. The second set was also close as Algoma won 25-17. Each set seemed to get longer as the teams were volleying well against each other. Bulldog Head Coach Robin Gilligan had this to say about her team: "They do come out a little slow at times but they're a team that doesn't give up and they come out fighting the next game and next game as shown tonight. We came back and won those two sets after losing two, not many teams can come back and do that mentally let alone physically."

In the third set Peshtigo's serves were on the money and the Bulldogs were able to claw through it to win it 23-25. Wolves Head Coach Eric Dean said, "I subbed more than I normally do in that 3rd set, when we had it in hand and they're (Peshtigo) too talented of team to do that. I rolled the dice and it didn't work so, hats off to them." He also went on to say that his girls did everything they are working on in practice during the first two sets. In the fourth set Peshtigo kept their momentum going and were able to profit off of Algoma errors to win 18-25.

In the fifth and final set you could visibly see how tired both teams were. It was very close even though the Algoma Wolves were able to win the final set 15-9. There was a lot of hustle for both teams and the scores show that.

After the game Bulldog's Head Coach Robin Gilligan had this to say of her back row defense: "Tori (Jandt), Grace (Wickman), and McKenna (Evancheck) did an outstanding job tonight."

The Gillett Tigers came out on top of this closely competitive match against the Niagara Lady Badgers last night. In the first game, it was a strong outing for the Lady Badgers winning the game 18-25. In the second game, Gillett gained momentum and was able to come out on top beating the Badgers 25-23. In the third game it was déj  vu for the Tigers as Niagara was able to pull ahead in the set to take it 18-25. In the fourth set, Gillett got momentum right when they needed it to take the game 25-20. In the fifth and final set, tension was high as the game was close, though the Tigers were able to take it all 15-13. Coach Erin Buhrandt who was very proud of her team, said this after the game: " Great teamwork and effort. Court awareness was put into effect last night."

Quote from head coach Carol St. Arnauld: "My team came out strong tonight against Gillett in game one. We lost a little momentum in game two and came back in three only to lose the next two sets. We need to continue to transition off the net and set up our hitters. We know that we can do better than what we did tonight. We let this one get away from us. We need to learn the lesson and move forward because this team has the potential to do so."
