Dick McFarlane Retires After 37 Years as Rural Mail Carrier
Issue Date: October 3, 2019
After 37 years on the job with 457 stops daily and traveling over 600,000 route miles veteran Peshtigo postal employee Dick McFarlane, has decided to hang it up. The 69 year young McFarlane said it was not an easy decision to make but Monday Sept. 30th is his last day. "Monday is still the best day of the week for me, I really enjoy Mondays because I can get back to work, after wonderful weekends," he stated.
McFarlane started with the Peshtigo Post Office on May 12, 1982 as a substitute rural mail carrier for Al Krizenesky and Harry Micke. He did that job for almost 14 years and in 1996 he was hired on fulltime as a rural carrier. "I am not sure where all the time went but I truly enjoyed working at the Post Office, it is a great place to work," he said.
Peshtigo Postmaster Chris Lemke said Dick is the kind of guy that whistles as he walks in the door on Monday mornings. "He really likes what he does and it's hard not to enjoy working with him", Lemke commented. "We've had a lot of fun debating different topics on a daily basis. He is very conscientious and he gives his customers the best service that he can. It is very, very seldom that he makes an error but when it was brought to his attention Dick would go to any length to remedy the situation. He took pride in his work and his customers were very lucky to have a guy like him deliver their mail. He will be missed at the Peshtigo Post Office and we all wish him a long and exciting retirement."
McFarlane was born on July 24, 1950 and attended schools in Peshtigo through the 8th grade. His father worked for Unit Structures then and the family moved to North Carolina when his father was transferred there for work. McFarlane completed three years of high school in North Carolina before he completed his senior year in Pittsburg after another transfer his father took for Unit Structures.
McFarlane joined the Wisconsin National Guard in 1969 and served until 1975, adding that it was a great experience for him. On Feb. 22, 1984 he married his wife, Karen (McGee) in Marinette and the couple has two children. They are a daughter, Molly, 32, of Superior and a son, Mitchell, 23, who is a student at UW-Madison.
McFarlane enjoys shooting pool and is in a Wednesday night pool league. He also enjoys woodworking and construction work. "I am not sure what I will be doing after retirement, but a little traveling will be in my plans. My wife, Karen has a "to do list" a mile long. It's just hard to believe that 24 years of fulltime work with the post office is over".
