George William Steigelman, 76, of Lake Placid, FL., formerly of Crivitz, Wi., passed away on Wednesday, October 9th, after a short battle with cancer.
He was born on October 23,1942, to the late George and Aileen (Hurmi) Steigelman in Chicago, Ill. George attended High School at Lane Tech in Chicago, Ill., where he earned a swimming scholarship to Eastern Illinois University in Charleston Ill.
In college, he was most valuable swimmer two times in a row for the conference and earned the nick name "Baby Huey". George holds many records for the conference and placed second at nationals for the back stroke and qualified for the 1965 Olympics. He graduated with his Master's Degree in Administration.
On March 13th 1965, he married Ellen Annette Knight in Charleston Ill. They had 3 children, Amy, Glen and Wayne. George and Annette moved to River falls, WI. where he was a dorm director. He got his first teaching job in Crivitz in 1970 where he built his own house and raised his family, providing for them through his passion for hunting, fishing, gardening, canning and cutting the wood to heat their home.
In his first few years of teaching he was a Phy-Ed teacher and then became the High School Guidance Counselor and also worked with the at risk children. George was a very supportive father to his children and grandchildren, always making time to support them with all of their activities and sports.
George especially enjoyed lying on the couch with a drink in hand listening to Annette play the piano. Upon retirement, George enjoyed being a snowbird for 20 years and spent part of the winters in Florida. Annette died November 25th, 2003.
George met Helga Schuh from Marinette in 2004 through the Crivitz German Club in which he was an active member. George and Helga moved to Lake Placid, FL permanently in 2017. He was a member of the Elks Club, American legion, VFW life member and the Moose Lodge.
George is survived by his special friend and partner, Helga Schuh, Lake Placid, FL.; 3 children, Amy Reed, Green Bay, WI, Glen (Steve) Steigelman, Joshua Tree, CA and Wayne (Angel) Steigelman, Green Bay, WI.; grandchildren, Tim Reed, Green Bay, WI and Mitchell Reed, Milwaukee, WI; one sister-in-law, Connie (Jean) Knight, Jacksonville, FL and a niece, Deb (Bruce) Deutsch, Prescott Valley, AZ.
Along with his parents, he was preceded in death by his loving wife, Annette and a son-in-law, Kelly.
Granting George's wishes, there will not be any services.
