Blue Devils Hang Tough; Fall in Sectional Final

Issue Date: November 7, 2019

Oshkosh Lourdes at Oconto

OCONTO -
The Oshkosh Lourdes Knights traveled to Oconto to take on the Blue Devils to play their sectional semi-final match Thursday. With this win the winner earns a spot in the WIAA State Volleyball Tournament. Oconto is the top-seed and Oshkosh is the second seed in the Division 3 bracket. Both teams seemed pretty evenly matched, and they had seen each other in early September in an invitational meet-where Oconto won 2 games to 1.

In the first game, the Blue Devils missed a serve, and botched a return making the score 0-2 Oshkosh. Then Oconto set up Behnke for the kill making the score 1-2 Oshkosh. A couple points later, Barhke then set up Blue Devil senior Hornblad for the kill giving Oconto the lead 3-2. This is when you could see the Knight's communication implode, and then Behnke uses great placement on a tip kill and the score is 7-4 Oconto. Blue Devil Hannah Moe serves up an ace and the score is 12-6 and Oshkosh Lourdes head coach Trudi Woods called a time-out. After the time-out, Moe serves again, but Oshkosh Lourdes senior Claire Chier gets a kill. A few plays later, Oconto freshman Kate Bahrke serves an ace making the score 17-11. A few more plays later, Blue Devil senior Aubree Bucheger serves the score to 20-12. Then the Knights set up senior Raechel Russo for the kill bringing the score to 20-14. There were some great volleys in this game, and it seemed that the Knights were not going to go down without a fight. With their scrappy play Oshkosh Lourdes were able to bring the score to 24-20 when a block attempt by the Knights hit the floor and Oconto won the first game 25-21.

In the second game, the long rallies continued and both teams matched the other's point for point. Oconto jumped out to a quick 4-2 lead only to let Lourdes catch up and all of a sudden it's 6 all. A couple of great serves by Knight sophomore Camille Clark and some miscues from the Blue Devils, Lourdes were up by two bring the score to 6-8. The next few points included great serves from Blue Devils Behnke and Walkowiak along with some great hustle from the Knights the score was 8-10 Lourdes leading. Then the Knights hit a couple attacks into the net and the score was 10-11. Oconto kept nipping at the heels of the Knights, taking the lead with some great serving once again from freshman Blue Devil Kate Barhke who got the score to 15-14 Oconto. A couple more great serves from the Knight's Clark and 17-19 Oshkosh Lourdes leading. After an Oconto time-out, and a couple of long rallies, the score was 18-22 Lourdes. Then Oshkosh Lourdes senior Claire Chier hit an attack long giving Oconto a side-out and brought the score to 19-22. Then Blue Devil Maggie Sohrweide came into the game to serve and after the Knights sent the ball back over, and Oconto was able to set up Behnke for the kill the score was 21-23, but still Lourdes had the lead. Oshkosh went on to take game two 25-21.

In game three, once again the serving of Oconto freshman Bahrke gave the Blue Devils momentum and a lead of 6-1. A few more long rallies and side-outs, the score was 9-5 Oconto. Then a big kill from Blue Devil sophomore Hannah Moe and the score was 10-5. Next, Moe served it up to the Knights, and anything they sent back was dug up by the Blue Devils. Barhke was there to stop a Knight attack, and Behnke set up sophomore Leah Allen with a big kill. You could feel the momentum shift in favor of Oconto who was up 11-5. With Sohrweide serving and Barhke setting up Behnke, the Blue Devils took a 16-6 lead over Oshkosh Lourdes. Then a couple of rallies once again, and some Oconto miscues at the net, Lourdes was able to gain 3 points, and the score was still 17-9 in favor of the Blue Devils. After setting up Oconto's big hitters in Behnke, Moe and Hornblad, Oconto was up 22-10 in the third game. Oshkosh could not seem to find a hole in Oconto's defense, but kept hitting at the Blue Devil Blockers to pick up six more points, but ultimately losing game three 25-16.

At the start of game four, it seemed as though the Knights wanted to take back the momentum they lost in game three and some overpowered attacks from Oconto helped out as well, taking a 4-3 lead at the start. Once again Oconto's net play kept them in the game and it was 4 all. It seemed as though no matter who Bahrke set up, Behnke, Hornblad, or Allan, it was going to end with a kill for the Blue Devils and all of a sudden the score in the fourth game was 9-5 in favor of Oconto. After a side out, Blue Devil Hannah Moe went on a serving spree and she brought Oconto's lead up to 13-6. Then a quick rally from Lourdes brought the score to 14-9, Oconto still in the lead. Then serves from Bahrke and Bucheger and a kills from Behnke and Moe brought the score to 19-12. With Behnke serving, and Bahrke setting up Hornblack, the score was 21-14 Oconto. A well placed tip from Hornblad and the Blue Devils were up 22-14. With Walkowiak serving and a kill from Moe, Oconto was able to take the win 25-14!

The Blue Devils will face the Fall Creek Crickets at St. Mary Catholic High School in Neenah on Saturday November 2nd.

Once again the Oconto Blue Devils were able to beat the Oshkosh Lourdes Knights 25-21, 21-25, 25-16, 25-14 in a sectional semifinal match. Leaders for Oconto were Cora Behnke with 22 kills and 22 digs, Kate Bahrke with 33 assists, 16 digs and six aces, and Aubree Bucheger with 29 digs. Jenna Hornblad had nine kills, and Hannah Moe and Leah Allen combined for 13 kills.

Fall Creek vs Oconto at St Mary Catholic

NEENAH-
Both the Fall Creek Crickets and the Oconto Blue Devils traveled to a neutral site on Saturday to play for a berth in the WIAA State Volleyball Tournament. The first game was pretty tight, each team matching the other bump, set, spike. Sorhweide started out serving for the Blue Devils, and Fall Creeks first attack from six foot sophomore Gianna Vollrath proved to be quite powerful and was out, giving the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead. After Sorhweide's second serve, and the Crickets were able to set up Vollrath once again, Oconto was able to answer and set up junior Cora Behnke for the kill, which was blocked by the towering sophomore Vollrath in the center. That totally caught the Blue Devils off guard. After the Fall Creek serve, Oconto set up Behnke for the kill, but senior Cricket Allison Dunham was able to dig the attack up and they were able to send the free ball back over to Oconto. Once again the Blue Devils set up their co-captain Cora Behnke and Fall Creek was able to set up the Vollrath but once again hit it out bringing the score to 2-1 Oconto. Bringing up Bahrke's serve, and the Crickets were able to set up senior Madisen Johnson for the kill, tying up the score 2-2. This sort of play, side-out for side-out kept on going until the Crickets took an 11-8 lead over the Blue Devils. Then, Oconto's Allan got a kill and it was 11-9 giving Sohrweide the serve again, and who was able to get Oconto to 10 points. After that, Fall Creek senior Gabby LeMay had the serve, giving the Crickets a 15-12 lead over Oconto. Then with Bucheger serving for the Blue Devils and another kill by Behnke, Oconto was able to bring it back to 14-15. On the next point, Blue Devil Cora Behnke landed wonky on her left ankle and scooted off the court as Oconto won the point, but lost their leader. Behnke was on the sideline for a while, before Oconto's Assistant Coach Moe helped the athletic trainer carry her to the trainer's station to have a better look at what happened to number 15's ankle. When this happened you could feel the collective wind taken out of the Blue Devil players and crowd. The score kept close once again, until the score got to 20-20, then the Crickets took control, and basically never looked back. Fall Creek went on to win the first game 25-20.

In the second game, the Crickets jumped out to a 5-3 lead, and then Behnke came back with a rousing round of applause from both crowds. Though you could tell Behnke was not one-hundred percent as she played gingerly, hoping not to injure herself anymore, but try to give her team the confidence they needed to win a game. Oconto kept chasing Fall Creek's lead, Walkowiak's serve brought the score to 7-8, but no matter how hard Oconto fought, the Cricket's were too much for the Blue Devils. With Fall Creek's senior libero Abigail Bell serving, the Cricket's lead began to grow to 20-7. Oconto got a much needed side-out and Sohrweide served and was able to get the Blue Devils a point, 20-8. Then another Cricket side-out brought Fall Creek senior Caitlyn Schulz up to serve, and she took the score to 24-9. Oconto senior Jenna Hornblad was able to psych out Cricket senior Madisen Johnson who hit the ball into the net, taking the score to 24-10. Once again, freshman Bahrke served and the Blue Devils got one more point before dropping the second game 25-11.

In the third game, the Blue Devils once again stuck with the Crickets who jumped ahead to a 5-3 lead early. One of the longest rallies of the match came after a Walkowiak serve and the score was at five all, every dig, set, and attack was answered by both teams until a partially blocked attack from the Crickets fell wonky and the Blue Devils were unable to dig it up. Then it was eight all when Fall Creek's Vollrath had another big kill. Another side-out for Oconto and Bahrke back up to serve, Oconto brought it back to nine all. A couple more rallies, and another kill from Oconto senior Jenna Hornblad and the score is 11-11. A few rallies later, with serves from Oconto's Behnke, and Fall Creek's Quinlyn Rubeck and Allison Dunham, the Crickets were able to extend their lead 22-13. A kill from Blue Devil Moe, gave Oconto the side-out the so sorely needed, she was able to help her team to get to 15, but the Crickets were too much, and Fall Creek the third game by a final score of 25-16.

The Blue Devils gave it their all, and had a great season.

The Fall Creek Crickets were able to sweep the Oconto Blue Devils 25-20, 25-11, 25-16 in a heartbreaker of a match. Oconto was led by Aubree Bucheger with 23 digs. Kate Bahrke with 17 assists and seven digs, and Cora Behnke with eight kills. Hannah Moe and Jenna Hornblad combined for 10 kills.
