Philomine S. Powers

Issue Date: November 14, 2019

Philomine Sophie "Phil"/"Sis" (nee List) Powers, 92, died peacefully in her home along the Thunder Mountain River on Thursday, November 7, 2019.

Phil, or "Sis" as she was called by family and friends growing up, was born in Menominee, MI on October 5, 1927 and grew up primarily in the Pound WI area. Her father Albert List was a woodsman and dairy farmer married to her mother, a homemaker and expert baker, Josephine (Haulotte) List. Phil attended the one-room schoolhouse on County W and was a proud graduate of Marinette High School class of 1945.

In 1950, Phil married outdoorsman, insurance salesman and inveterate teller of tales, George Lawrence Powers in Pound. They started life together in Sheboygan, WI and later lived in Beloit WI for roughly 30 years. Phil worked much of her life, including as a bank teller in Marinette, in Beloit at the Boys Club and later on, as a library assistant at Duluth Cathedral High School.

While raising her children she frequently welcomed her husband's business associates into their home for delicious meals and fellowship around the dinner table. Phil also began a life-long dedication to volunteering in her community. She volunteered many hours at her children's schools, as well as in the Marion Guild at St. Jude Church that she attended with her family. They made numerous life-long friends in Beloit and it was a challenge newborn when George's job required a move to Northern Minnesota in the summer of 1974.

After she and George moved to Duluth, MN, Phil continued to host George's business associates for delicious meals as well as dinner parties.  There, they also made a host of friends and neighbors that they remained in touch with for decades to come. From 1980 to 1982, they lived briefly in Rochester, MN.

Despite their home being in several cities over their married life, Phil and George maintained close ties with their friends and family from the Crivitz area, purchasing a cabin on the Thunder Mountain River early in their marriage ~~ that home would eventually become their full-time retirement home in the Fall of 1982. It was in that idyllic setting that Phil and George welcomed many of their family and friends ~~ as well as numerous Clergy from their Church ~~ to take a respite and enjoy the beauty of the area.

Phil was a woman of deep faith, converting to Catholicism upon marrying George and living out her beliefs as she gave of her time and talents so generously over the years. She was an avid knitter and in addition to knitting countless "wedding afghans" ~~ first for her children and then for her numerous nieces and nephews". She even knitted these treasured afghans for many of *their* children as well.

Her knitting always reflected her caring and giving nature, as she voluntarily knit countless hats that welcomed hundreds of babies born at the Marinette Hospital. She also knit hundreds of pairs of mittens over the years that were nearly all donated to school children and families in need.

Phil's volunteer work also included rocking babies at the Crivitz Youth Inc. in Crivitz, where she came to be known as "Grandma Phil" to many youngsters, who would often make a point to say hello and visit with her in the local grocery store or wherever she might be out and about" She also volunteered at the Crivitz Food Pantry, helping with whatever needed doing and joining in the shenanigans that may or may not have occurred when their work was done.

Phil was preceded in death by her husband, George Lawrence Powers; sister, Elizabeth "Bette" Westman and brothers, Joseph List, Edward List, Richard List and infant Leonard.

She is survived by her 2 children, Cheryl Lynn (Rick) Thibodeau of Charlotte, NC and Jerome "Jerry"(Diana) Powers of Englewood, CO;  4 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren and sisters-in-law, Ruth Odekirk of Sheboygan Falls and Ladonna List of Marinette.

Phil's family wishes to acknowledge and give special thanks for the exquisite kindness and attentive care to all of the friends who made it possible for Phil to remain living in the Wisconsin home that she came to love so very dearly after George departed. We would also like to give special thanks to the many friends who looked out for our beloved Phil while we were many miles away ~~ Each of you who shared her friendship and spent time with her were so vital to her continued good health and her ability to live such a vital life to the end.

Visitation:  4-6PM Wednesday, November 13 at the Rhodes Charapata Funeral Home, as well as 9:30-10:30AM Thursday, November 14, followed by an 11AM Mass of Christian Burial at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Crivitz. In lieu of flowers, Memorials are preferred to Crivitz Food Pantry or Unity Hospice, Marinette, WI [www.unityhospice.org]. Arrangements are being made by Rhodes Charapata Funeral Home, 801 George Street, Crivitz, 715-854-7460.
