Harriet V. Barley Issue Date: June 17, 2020
Harriet Veronica (Dubey) Barley, 87, of Menominee, MI, passed away peacefully surrounded by her family on Monday June 15, 2020. The former Harriet Dubey was born on May 11, 1933 in Nadeau, MI to the late Alex and Pearl (LeBeau) Dubey. She graduated from Menominee High School in 1951. On January 24, 1953, Harriet married her high school sweetheart, Richard J. Barley at St. Williams Catholic Church in Menominee, MI. Richard preceded her in death on June 18, 1998.
Harriet was a homemaker until her children attended school, at which time she owned and operated Barley Real Estate alongside her husband. She enjoyed providing a safe, loving home to many foster children. Harriet had an easy spirit, and was grateful for the blessings given to her. She had a great sense of humor and would offer a smile, a joke or a laugh to anyone she met.
She enjoyed going to the casino to try her luck and spent her mornings with good friends at the Bridgeview roundtable. She loved to travel across the United States to visit her children and especially enjoyed spending time in her vacation home near Orlando, FL.
Harriet's greatest joy was her family and spending time with her 29 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren watching them showcase their talents in sports, music and so many other activities. She had a strong faith in God and was a member of Resurrection Catholic Church where she enjoyed years of participation in the choir and other church activities.
Survivors include her children: Jayne (Scott) Oberle of Seattle, WA and children, Heather (Jade) Smith, Erin (Daniel) Parshall and Tanya (Mel Morales) Oberle; John (Barb) Barley of Menominee and children, Aimee (Dave) Buchert, Jess (Erin) Barley, Anne (Paul) Farley and Allison Barley; Kym Pogrant of Menominee, MI and children, Jordon (Katie) Pogrant and Blake Pogrant (James Martell); Aimee Barley of Crivitz, WI and children, Alex Barley and Abigail Barley; Jill (Bill) Schwanz of Menominee and children Kristen (Josh Biros) Schwanz, Korry Schwanz (Matt Hansen) and Bret Schwanz (Beata Kalata); Joan (Mark) Solander of Stephenson and children, Ryan Woods (Meghan Meyers) and Cody Woods (Lindsay Finch); Joel (Korry) Barley of Menominee and children, Kayla Barley, Lindsey Lewis, Jordan (Kara) Barley, Kati (Brett) Beland, and Karli Barley (Erik Fedran); Joy (Tony) Gascon of Oconomowoc, WI and children, Tyler Gascon, Drew Gascon, Holly (Eric) Clark and Sam Gascon; Jean (James) Gallagher of Montverde, FL and children, Grace Gallagher, Robert Gallagher and Mary Katherine Gallagher; Jan (David) Gutowski of Clermont, FL and children, Emily Gutowski and Christopher Gutowski.
Surviving great-grandchildren include: Jonah Smith, Nora Smith, Cameron Parshall, Audrey Parshall, Devon Barley, Hannah Schultz, Alison Matzdorf, Joshua Barley, Megan Barley, Jack Farley, Jake Farley, Lucas Farley, Cole Farley, Freddie Biros, Charli Lewis, Jay Barley, Jack Barley, Max Beland, Oscar Gascon, Charlotte Gascon, Logan Clark and Dane Clark.
She is also survived by her sister, Alberta (Richard) Semke of Salem, OR and her brother, Dennis Dubey of Menominee, MI and her sisters-in-law, Marjie Barley and Donna Dubey. She also cherished her many nieces, nephews and cousins. She also was fortunate to be survived by two close lifelong friends, Carol Schick and Gayle Dufrense.
In addition to her husband, Richard and parents, she was preceded in death by her son, Jed Barley; her sisters, Dorothy Dubey and Rita (Lester) Sharon and brother, Eugene (Janet) Dubey, as well as her in-laws, James and Anna Barley, William Barley and Elaine Barley Olson.
Visitation for Harriet will be held at Cadieu Funeral Home on Thursday, June 18, 2020 from 4:00 pm until time of the Prayer Service at 6:45 pm, with Deacon Vince Beckley presiding. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Harriet on Friday, June 19, 2020 at 1pm at Resurrection Catholic Church, with Fr. Brian Gerber presiding. Due to COVID-19 and limited seating, the Funeral Mass will also be live-streamed on the Resurrection Parish's Facebook page beginning at 1pm. Burial will follow in Riverside Cemetery.
The family requests anyone attending the visitation to please wear a face mask and respect social distancing.
Harriet's family would like to express our sincere thanks to those who provided Harriet care over this past year: The providers and staff at Augustana Rehab, Aurora Medical Center Bay Area, Oconomowoc Memorial and the Aurora Medical Group. Special thanks to the care team of U.P. Health System Home Care and Hospice who cared for us all during her final days.
