Girl's Golf - Dufrane Claims First Coaching Victory, Wingender is Medalist

Issue Date: September 2, 2020

Abby Dufrane has spent her fair share of time on the golf course as a player, but she's seeing the game in a different way lately.

Dufrane spent four years golfing at Marinette herself, qualifying for state twice as a Marine, including a second-place finish in her senior year. After four years playing with Division I South Dakota University that ended in 2018, she started as the new Marinette girls golf coach for this season.

Dufrane said coaching has always been something on her to-do list, but she wasn't sure what level it would be at. It turns out the opportunity would present itself back in her hometown. So far, despite all that's going on during the COVID-19 pandemic, she's trying to keep things upbeat for the Marinette squad.

"It's very different being a coach than a player. You kind of have a different mindset as a coach. You're always trying to keep everybody positive at all times," she said. "We just try to keep those positive thoughts. I like to tell the girls to keep smiling. When they smile they have a little more fun, they're a little more loose and they usually end up playing a little bit better too."

So far, that strategy is 1-0. Her Marines opened the season by beating Little Chute 205 to 216 on Friday at Little River Country Club, led by a pair of scores in the low 40s from Dalanie Langlois and Lindsey Wingender. The pair shot 44 and 42, respectively, to pace the 10 golfers on the day.

Elsewhere on the Marines, Camryn Ferm shot a 58, Hannah Chenier finished with a 61 and Jenna Margetta carded a 63.

All five of Little Chute's golfers put up scores between 50 and 59, so the two 40s from Wingender and Langlois were key to the victory.

After some previous struggles with her longer clubs, Wingender hit her 4-iron off the tee on Friday and it paid dividends, as Dufrane thought the Marinette junior hit the fairway on all nine of her tee shots.

That could be described as "smart golf,' something Dufrane referenced after the match.

"I thought each girl played in their own game, they didn't let anything else bother them and everybody kept a straight head," she said.

Dufrane said her team played about as well as she could have expected, given some rainy conditions on the first day out.

"I thought for the first match out, this was really good," she said. "Of course, it's always good to have a little home-course advantage when you're playing your home course to start, but it just was one of those things where we talked right before: "we've got to relax, we're going to smile a bit, we're going to have some fun and let's play smart golf.'"

And as for the duo of Wingender and Langlois? "With practice, the two of them are going to be pretty special together."

Marines Crusie Past FVL Langlios, Wingender go 1-2

Marinette topped Fox Valley Lutheran on Monday, with Dalanie Langlois and Lindsey Wingender once again leading the way for the Marines at High Cliff Golf Course near Appleton.

Langlois led all golfers with a 44, with Wingender's 47 not far behind. Hannah Chenier and Camryn Ferm chipped in 57s and Jenna Marqetta carded a 72. Marinette totaled a 205 as a team to FVL's 214.

"I felt like the girls continued to grind all day," Marinette coach Abby Dufrane said. "It definitely wasn't our best golf, but every girl continued to grind it out and make a score because they wanted to help their team. It's always nice to come out on top even when you don't have your best golf that day."
